You can use your phone to organize kidney test results, home blood pressure readings, and questions for your care team—but a phone cannot measure kidney function or replace blood and urine tests. For meaningful monitoring, record dated results and review how they change over time with your health professional.

What kidney monitoring measures

Kidney monitoring involves related tests that answer different questions:

  • GFR or eGFR: estimates how well your kidneys filter waste. It is based on a blood test.
  • Urine albumin: checks for albumin, a protein that can appear in urine when kidneys are damaged. It may be reported as an albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR or uACR).

One result alone is not a complete picture. NIDDK describes goals that include keeping GFR stable and urine albumin the same or lower. Ask your provider how each result compares with your previous results and what the change means for you. A change on its own is not a diagnosis or a reason to alter treatment.

More than 1 in 7 U.S. adults—about 37 million people—may have chronic kidney disease, according to the CDC estimate for 2019 reproduced by NIDDK. That population estimate is not an individual assessment.

How to use your phone as a kidney-health log

A notes app, spreadsheet, or health-record feature can keep information together for appointments. Use whichever option makes it easy for you to enter accurate records and, if needed, share them with your care team.

  1. Create a dated entry for each test. Include the test name, result, units shown by the lab, and date. Preserve any reference information provided with the result rather than converting values yourself.
  2. Record GFR/eGFR and urine albumin separately. Keep the test names clear so you do not mistake one measure for the other.
  3. Add blood pressure readings if your care team recommends home checks. Record the date and reading, and follow the clinician’s instructions for how and when to measure.
  4. Keep questions in the same place. Add them when they occur so you can bring them to your next appointment.
  5. Review trends with your provider. Ask how the latest results compare with earlier ones and whether follow-up is needed.

NKF’s Track Your GFR and Albuminuria Numbers resource is designed to help patients understand and record dated results. NIDDK’s Managing Chronic Kidney Disease page links a test-result tracking document and provides questions for appointments.

Questions to take to your next appointment

NIDDK suggests questions such as:

  • “What is my GFR? What does that mean?”
  • “Has my GFR changed since last time?”
  • “What is my urine albumin? What does it mean?”
  • “Has my urine albumin changed since the last time it was checked?”
  • “Is my kidney disease getting worse?”
  • “Is my blood pressure where it needs to be?”

These are useful prompts for understanding your results; your clinician can interpret them in light of your health and care plan.

Recording blood pressure at home

If your clinician recommends home blood pressure checks, an appropriately sized upper-arm cuff can measure blood pressure for you to record on your phone. It does not measure GFR or urine albumin. Ask your health professional what your personal blood pressure goal is and how often to check it; there is no single schedule or target that applies to everyone. NIDDK explains this in its high blood pressure and kidney disease guidance.

When choosing a cuff, consider whether it is appropriately validated, fits your arm, is readable, and can store or transfer readings in a way that works for you. No particular monitor model is established here as best for kidney monitoring.

What kidney apps can—and cannot—do

Official resources can help you understand results or organize records, but they are not phone sensors. NKF’s eGFR calculator app information describes a tool for medical professionals to estimate kidney function. Its Relative Risk, Monitoring and Referral in Patients with CKD page describes risk and monitoring information by category. These are reference or professional-support tools, not substitutes for your own lab results and clinician’s advice.

Platform availability can change: the relative-risk page says Android is not yet supported, while NKF’s separate eGFR app page describes updated iOS and Android apps. Check the current listing before relying on availability. If you use any app or health-record feature, consider whether its privacy controls, record accuracy, and sharing options meet your needs.

When to ask for guidance

Ask your care team how often you need blood and urine tests, and whether home blood pressure readings belong in your plan. Do not change medicines, diet, or monitoring frequency based on an app, one reading, or one lab result without discussing it with your clinician.
