A personal bioaerosol sampler collects airborne biological particles from a person’s breathing zone so the sample can be analyzed later. There is no single best sampler for every organism or test: choose one whose collection medium and capture method fit the target and planned analysis, then check its flow, wearability, and performance in conditions like yours.
What a personal bioaerosol sampler does
A personal sampler is carried or worn to collect particles in a person’s breathing or personal exposure zone. Depending on its design, it deposits particles on a filter or charged surface, or collects them into a tube, liquid, or other medium. The collected material can then be assessed through methods such as culture, microscopy, or molecular analysis. NIOSH describes its Personal Bioaerosol Cyclone Sampler as collecting airborne particles into relevant respiratory sizes and appropriate tubes to facilitate analysis.
The sampler gathers material; it does not identify a pathogen on its own or establish that an exposure is dangerous. The result depends on what the sampler captures, the analysis performed, and the study design. A particle collection-efficiency figure is not automatically a measure of viable biological recovery, infection risk, or a universal indoor-air health threshold.

Sampler families use different capture mechanisms. The mechanism and collection medium affect what can be recovered and which analyses are feasible.

| Approach | Where particles are collected | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Filter sampling | On a filter, such as polycarbonate | Check that the filter and extraction or analysis procedure suit the target; dust loading may affect operation. |
| Cyclone sampling | Into a tube or liquid collection system | Consider the intended particle-size range, flow, liquid or tube handling, and compatibility with the assay. |
| Impaction | On a collection surface, often a plate or other substrate | Confirm the surface supports the intended endpoint, particularly if assessing viable organisms. |
| Electrostatic collection | On a charged collection surface or into a collection medium | Do not treat prototype performance as a commercial product specification; verify availability and analysis compatibility. |
These are broad design categories, not interchangeable guarantees. A method that performs well for one particle type or assay may perform differently for another.
How to choose a sampler for your study
- Define the target and endpoint. Decide whether you need viable or culturable organisms, spores, total biological material, or a molecular result. The assay should shape the collection method and medium.
- Confirm medium compatibility. Check whether the filter, liquid, tube, plate, or charged surface can be processed using the planned laboratory method. A sampler that captures particles is not useful for an endpoint its medium cannot support.
- Assess aspiration and retention. Ask how representative the particles entering the sampler are of the person’s exposure and how much is retained. Collection efficiency in a physical test does not by itself show biological recovery or field representativeness.
- Match flow and duration to the wear protocol. Consider the required sample volume and run time, along with pump or battery needs and whether the unit can be worn comfortably for the intended period.
- Account for dust and other environmental loading. In high-particulate settings, clogging can change sampling performance or interrupt collection. Seek evidence from conditions comparable to the intended use.
- Check field evidence and equipment status. Prefer evaluations involving similar environments, organisms, and endpoints. Confirm that the model and compatible collection media are actually available; a research prototype is not necessarily a purchasable instrument.

- In a 2015 field evaluation, polycarbonate filters had the highest relative efficiency among the filters tested, particularly for bacteria. Button and IOM samplers using those filters had the highest relative efficiencies for fungi and bacteria among the compared methods, followed by the NIOSH cyclone. The Button sampler was more prone to clogging in high-dust conditions. Read the NIOSH field evaluation.
- A 2018 NIOSH-hosted report on the Personal Electrostatic Bioaerosol Sampler (PEBS) reported more than 80% physical collection efficiency at 10 L/min. In the report’s comparisons with the BioSampler, results varied by endpoint: PEBS had similar or higher culturable bacteria, lower culturable spores, and higher airborne ATP. This is a study-specific prototype result, not a general purchasing guarantee. Read the PEBS report.
- A 2016 conference record reported 70–90% collection efficiency for tested particles and operating conditions, with bacterial aerosol experiments in the 70–80% range, for a PEBS prototype. These figures do not establish a universally available commercial specification. Read the conference record.
- A 2012 wind-tunnel study tested two cyclone-based personal samplers with recirculating liquid films using fluorescent test aerosols from 0.5 to 20 micrometres at wind speeds of 0.5 and 2.0 m/s. Their reported aspiration efficiencies closely agreed with the ACGIH inhalable convention within that tested size range; that finding is limited to the tested setup. Read the wind-tunnel study.
What a sampler result can tell you
A sampler provides material for a specified analysis. Interpretation requires knowing the target, collection medium, sampling conditions, and assay. A positive result from a biological analysis does not, by itself, quantify a person’s infection risk; likewise, a collection-efficiency result does not mean the same percentage of organisms remains viable or can be detected by every assay.
