A periscope camera is usually a type of telephoto camera, not its opposite. Telephoto describes the tighter view and longer focal length; periscope describes folded optics that redirect light inside the phone to make a longer optical path fit in a slim body.
What do “telephoto” and “periscope” mean?
The terms describe different things. A telephoto camera gives a narrower field of view than a phone’s main camera, making distant subjects appear larger in the frame. A periscope camera uses a folded optical path—commonly involving a prism or mirror—to fit that longer path inside the phone.
So a periscope module is commonly a telephoto camera with a particular optical layout. The labels are not mutually exclusive: one tells you about the camera’s view, the other about how its optics are arranged.
How does a periscope camera work?
Conventional telephoto layout
A conventional phone telephoto camera uses lens elements to create a tighter view. Longer focal lengths require more room for the optical assembly, which can make it difficult to fit the module straight behind a thin phone’s camera opening.

Folded optical path
In a folded design, a prism or mirror redirects incoming light so the optical path can run sideways through the phone. Samsung Semiconductor describes a conventional folded telephoto module as using a prism and a lens set between the prism and image sensor; OPPO likewise explains that periscope designs make greater use of horizontal space inside the phone. These are manufacturer descriptions, not a single required design.
Layouts vary. Samsung’s ALoP discussion describes a folded telephoto design that positions lenses differently around the prism, while OPPO describes a triple-prism arrangement and dual-periscope system in its Find X8 series article. Those examples illustrate design choices; they do not establish that every periscope camera uses the same arrangement.

What does the difference mean when taking photos?
Reach and framing
A telephoto camera can help frame portraits or other subjects from a moderate distance. A longer-reach periscope module can be useful when the subject is farther away, such as details across a venue or distant travel scenes. At its native view, a dedicated module can provide optical magnification rather than merely enlarging a cropped image.
Phones can include more than one telephoto-range camera. Android Authority’s explainer, for example, describes the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra as pairing a 3× telephoto camera with a 10× periscope camera. It also calls the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s system “tetraprism telephoto”; that is Apple’s branding for its implementation, not a separate photographic purpose. These are illustrative older examples, not recommendations or confirmation of current availability.

Optical zoom versus advertised maximum zoom
A module’s native optical view is only one part of a phone’s zoom range. At higher zoom levels, a phone may crop sensor data, combine camera modules, or apply computational processing; some systems also advertise AI-assisted zoom. Check the stated optical specification separately from the maximum zoom number, which does not by itself mean the entire range is optical.
What are the trade-offs?
Folding the light path can help fit more optical reach into a thin phone, but the camera module still has to balance physical space with image-making needs. Sensor dimensions, lens diameter, aperture, stabilization and module geometry all affect performance.

A periscope label alone does not guarantee a particular zoom ratio or better image quality. Nor does the available evidence establish that every periscope camera is brighter, sharper or better in low light than every conventional telephoto camera. A longer reach may suit distant subjects, while the best result in a given scene depends on the whole camera system and the shooting conditions.

Compare the camera specifications and behavior that match the pictures you want to take, rather than choosing by the “periscope” label or the largest zoom number.

- Native focal length or optical magnification: Check the native view for each camera module and identify which one provides the reach you need.
- Sensor size and resolution: These affect how much detail the camera captures and how much useful cropping may remain possible.
- Aperture and optical stabilization: Consider these for handheld shots, especially in dim light or when photographing distant subjects.
- Zoom transitions: Find out how the phone switches among its main, telephoto and periscope cameras at intermediate zoom settings.
- Zoom method: Separate optical reach from sensor cropping, hybrid processing and software-enhanced maximum zoom.
- Your subjects: Portraits at moderate distance, distant action, concerts, travel details and close subjects place different demands on the camera system.
Megapixel count and maximum zoom are not stand-alone measures of image quality. The cited explainers and manufacturer articles do not provide a controlled, head-to-head image test across camera systems, so they cannot establish which design produces better photos in general.
