Short answer: choose ScreenshotNeo first if you need an API or MCP server to capture clean screenshots, not a complete visual-regression review system. For managed visual testing, Chromatic is a natural fit for Storybook-led component work, Applitools Eyes adds visual validation to existing automation, and Percy alternatives should be weighed against your test targets, browser needs, review process, and willingness to maintain tooling. BackstopJS is an open-source option for teams prepared to operate their own workflow.

What a Percy alternative needs to do

Visual regression testing captures rendered pages or application states, compares them with approved baselines, and helps a team review changes in layout, styling, fonts, or color. Percy’s documentation describes capturing and comparing screenshots during test runs, then surfacing differences for review and approval. A useful alternative must fit both the way your application is tested and the way your team decides whether a visual change is expected.

The tools below are not interchangeable feature-for-feature, and the available product documentation does not establish an apples-to-apples performance winner. Treat the fit descriptions as starting points, then validate the specific integrations, usage model, and plan details for your account.

Which Percy alternative fits each workflow?

Tool Best fit What it does Trade-off to examine
ScreenshotNeo Teams needing screenshot capture through an API or AI-agent MCP server Captures clean PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output and identifies page verdict and billing status in response headers. It is a screenshot capture service, not a documented visual-baseline comparison and approval platform. Pair it with your own comparison and review workflow if you need regression testing.
Chromatic Storybook and design-system teams testing component states Captures story screenshots and compares them with previous versions; its docs also describe integrations through Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress. Check whether stories cover the integrated pages and user journeys that matter to your team.
Applitools Eyes Teams keeping their existing automation framework and adding visual validation Adds Visual AI to existing testing frameworks; Ultrafast Grid is described as providing cross-browser and device testing. Verify supported integrations, comparison approach, target environments, test volume, and plan economics for your use case.
BackstopJS Teams that want an open-source, configurable screenshot-comparison workflow Compares screenshots over time and supports scripts for user actions and application states. Your team owns setup, predictable test data, baseline maintenance, diff review, and reporting.

ScreenshotNeo: capture-first alternative

ScreenshotNeo is worth trying first when your immediate need is dependable screenshot or PDF capture from code, or screenshot tools for AI agents. It accepts a URL in a GET request and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture options include full-page and CSS-selector capture, device presets or custom viewports, dark mode, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, wait conditions, request blocking, headers, cookies, and user-agent configuration. These capabilities can feed a visual-testing pipeline, but the provided product facts do not describe managed baselines, visual-diff review, or regression approvals; do not assume it replaces those parts of Percy.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Chromatic: story-centered visual checks

Chromatic aligns closely with teams whose meaningful UI states are represented as Storybook stories. Storybook’s visual-testing documentation describes capturing story screenshots and comparing them with earlier versions. The documented Storybook addon requires Storybook 7.6 or later. Chromatic’s quickstart also documents integrations with Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress, so it should not be described as Storybook-only. Ask whether the application’s important end-to-end states are represented in the component workflow or need a separate test path.

Applitools Eyes: visual checks in an existing automation stack

Applitools positions Eyes as a visual validation layer for existing frameworks and describes its Ultrafast Grid as supporting cross-browser and device testing. Its integration directory lists testing, source-control, CI/CD, and collaboration tools, with examples including Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, Appium, Storybook, GitHub, GitLab, Jenkins, and Slack. Those vendor descriptions establish integration options, not an independent finding that one comparison method is more accurate or less expensive than another.

BackstopJS: own the capture and comparison workflow

BackstopJS is an open-source project for comparing web-application screenshots over time. It supports scripting user actions and application states, making it relevant when a team needs control over its test configuration and can maintain it. Its repository recommends predictable or stubbed data for dynamic applications. The project description does not establish the hosted approval interface or vendor support available from managed services.

How to choose: compare the workflow, not just feature labels

1. Define what you are testing

  • Components and isolated states: if stories are the source of truth, evaluate Chromatic’s story-centered workflow.
  • Whole pages and user journeys: map how your current browser tests produce the pages or states to compare. Percy documents page and state capture; BackstopJS supports scripted states.
  • Capture infrastructure only: consider ScreenshotNeo when you need an API/MCP-based capture step and will provide or already have the diffing and approval process.

2. Check framework and CI compatibility

Start with frameworks, CI providers, source control, and collaboration tools your team already uses. Percy, Chromatic, and Applitools document different integration surfaces. Chromatic lists Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress integrations; Applitools lists a broader set of examples across testing and delivery workflows. Confirm the exact supported integration and setup path for your versions before migration.

3. Specify the browser, operating-system, and device matrix

Percy documents Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. It says each browser snapshot counts separately toward screenshot usage, and its managed rendering environment fixes the operating system for each browser. Fonts, native controls, and scrollbars can therefore vary with OS rendering. If you need comparisons across specified operating systems, Percy directs users to configure BrowserStack Automate. Applitools describes Ultrafast Grid for cross-browser and device coverage; validate the environments your project actually needs.

4. Examine baseline review and dynamic-page behavior

A screenshot diff is useful only when reviewers can distinguish an intentional change from a regression and keep baselines current. Ask how changes are presented, who approves them, and how the system fits pull-request or CI review. For dynamic pages, stabilize clocks, network data, animations, and test fixtures where possible. BackstopJS specifically recommends predictable or stubbed data; each vendor’s handling of your own dynamic content should be verified in its current documentation.

5. Compare ownership and real economics

Choose a hosted workflow if your priority is minimizing the amount of capture, review, and reporting infrastructure your team operates. Choose BackstopJS only if you can assign ownership for runtime configuration, browser execution, test data, baseline updates, and results presentation. Before selecting any service, estimate snapshots per run multiplied by runs, states, and browser variants, then check current plan pricing, included usage, and overage terms directly with the vendor. Comparable current prices and account-level allowances are not established here.

Using ScreenshotNeo for capture in a visual-testing pipeline

ScreenshotNeo takes a URL and returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of the target page; replace the URL and provide an API key from your account. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for current parameters and response behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

A capture API can fit as the acquisition step in a custom pipeline: request the same page under controlled conditions, store the resulting artifact, then use your own image comparison, baseline store, and review process. ScreenshotNeo offers options such as waiting for a selector, a delay, or network idle; loading lazy images for full-page capture; hiding selectors; and applying custom CSS or JavaScript. These controls can help make capture conditions repeatable, but they do not by themselves guarantee identical output across runs or provide a managed regression workflow.

Or skip the browser setup

Use one GET request instead of wiring a browser into a capture script:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. For visual regression, you still need a comparison and approval workflow if your use case requires one. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Common migration and evaluation problems

Browser-specific diffs appear after switching tools

Check whether the old and new captures use the same browser and operating system. Rendering differences in fonts, controls, and scrollbars can produce diffs even when application code is unchanged. Keep the comparison matrix explicit rather than treating a browser name as a complete rendering environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Snapshots fluctuate between runs

Look for changing data, animation, timestamps, asynchronous content, and unloaded lazy images. Stub or stabilize data, use the tool’s wait controls where available, and capture the same application state. For BackstopJS, predictable or stubbed data is specifically recommended by the project.

Usage grows faster than expected

Count the actual capture units, not just test cases: browser variants can multiply snapshots, and Percy states that each browser is counted separately. Include repeated runs and states in the estimate, then verify current allowance and billing terms for the plan before moving a full suite.

The team cannot tell who approves baseline changes

Define ownership before migration: who reviews diffs, which changes can be accepted, and where approval belongs in the pull-request or release process. A capture tool alone does not answer these workflow questions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use more than one of these tools?

Yes. For example, a team may keep component-focused visual checks in its Storybook workflow while using another test path for page-level journeys. Avoid duplicating the same states unless the overlap serves a deliberate coverage goal.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Does a screenshot difference prove that a bug exists?

No. It identifies a rendered change for review; the team must determine whether that change is intended and whether it matters to users.
