To track what each AI agent costs on AWS, combine two data paths: use AWS-native attribution that flows into Cost Explorer or the Cost and Usage Report (CUR) for billed, invoice-oriented totals, and capture request metadata or OpenTelemetry traces for per-call operational detail. Carry stable agent and workflow identifiers through every inference request and orchestration step, then roll up call-level estimates by agent, workflow, and tenant. Token-rate calculations are estimates—not a substitute for reconciling against AWS billing data.

What each AWS cost data path can tell you

Billing attribution and invocation records answer different questions. AWS-native attribution supports billed-cost reporting, but its totals are aggregated; request metadata and traces preserve detail about individual calls and their place in a workflow.

Data path Attribution key Granularity and use Important limitation
Cost Explorer or CUR using AWS-native attribution IAM principal, or supported resource and profile tags Billed cost for financial reporting; Bedrock attribution is aggregated by usage type per day. Does not provide a bill line for every model request. Supported endpoints and attribution options vary; see AWS’s Bedrock cost-management documentation.
Bedrock request metadata and model invocation logs Request tags such as agent ID, workflow ID, task type, and environment Individual inference-call token counts and metadata for operational allocation. Metadata is not itself a Cost Explorer or CUR allocation tag. Logging must be enabled in the Region, and token-based dollar amounts require a maintained rate card. See AWS’s request-metadata documentation.
OpenTelemetry traces Span relationships and propagated agent, workflow, or trace context Shows model calls, tools, and orchestration steps in relation to one another. Sampling can omit spans, making trace-derived totals incomplete. See CloudWatch’s AI-agent telemetry guidance.

For financial reporting and per-call diagnosis together, use a billing-oriented method alongside request metadata or traces. AWS’s documentation frames the decision as: “I want per-user, per-prompt attribution — what are my choices?” The practical answer is to choose the billing mechanism for billed totals and instrumentation for prompt- or call-level detail.

Attach agent and workflow context to every inference request

Bedrock request metadata supports key-value tags on supported bedrock-runtime inference requests, including InvokeModel, InvokeModelWithResponseStream, Converse, and ConverseStream. When model invocation logging is enabled in the Region, those tags appear with invocation log records. A shared model client or gateway can apply required metadata consistently across agents and services.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Request metadata is not enforced by Bedrock: a call can succeed without it. Validate required fields in your shared client or gateway, and monitor for untagged calls so missing context does not silently weaken your rollups.

Choose identifiers for both reporting and diagnosis

  • Use stable, low-cardinality values—such as agent role, workflow type, team, environment, and feature—for aggregate reporting.
  • Add run, session, or trace IDs when you need to find and diagnose an individual execution. These high-cardinality identifiers are useful for detail, but are usually poor dashboard grouping dimensions.
  • Keep personally identifiable information, credentials, and other sensitive values out of metadata. Values may be retained in invocation logs and downstream systems.

Use the same identifier names and meanings throughout the system. In particular, distinguish an agent’s stable ID or role from a single run ID, and propagate the workflow ID to every participating agent and model call.

Preserve the orchestration tree with traces

A single user request can trigger multiple agents, repeated model calls, tool calls, and orchestration steps. OpenTelemetry spans preserve parent-child relationships across that execution, giving teams a way to associate usage with the agent and workflow that caused it instead of treating all model tokens as one flat total.

AWS documents agent telemetry paths for LangGraph, LangChain, Strands Agents, CrewAI, OpenAI Agents, LlamaIndex, and the Vercel AI SDK on Bedrock AgentCore, Lambda, EC2, ECS, or EKS. CloudWatch Omni can read model calls, tool calls, and orchestration steps from these traces.

Set sampling with completeness in mind

If the agent is the instrumented root service, AWS recommends leaving the sampler unset to support full root-service capture and accurate span-derived token metrics. Reducing the sampling rate reduces exported traces; trace-based usage totals can then be incomplete or inaccurate. Decide and document the capture policy before treating trace-derived totals as complete.

Estimate invocation cost, then reconcile it to billing

Bedrock invocation log records include token counts, including input and output and, where applicable, cache-read and cache-write counts. To estimate a call’s cost, multiply its relevant token counts by the rate for that model and Region, then group the result by request metadata. The rate card must be maintained by your team.

A token-rate estimate may differ from actual billed dollars. AWS warns that this calculation does not automatically account for discounts, commitments, batch pricing, free tier, or provisioned throughput. Keep estimated invocation allocations distinct from billed totals in dashboards and reports.

Use Cost Explorer or CUR to reconcile at the model and usage-type level. AWS billing data aggregates costs by usage type over an hour or day and does not put a per-request identifier on each line item. The billing view is therefore the invoice-oriented total; invocation records provide a more detailed operational allocation beneath it, not a replacement for the bill.

Build a rollup from invocation to agent, workflow, and tenant

The AWS Agentic AI Lens recommends collecting invocation costs, associating them with a parent agent, rolling agent costs into workflow totals, and then attributing workflow costs to tenants. A consistent taxonomy can include agent ID, agent role, workflow ID, task type, and environment.

  1. Record each inference call. Capture its input, output, and applicable cache token counts alongside request metadata or trace context.
  2. Associate calls with their execution. Propagate parent-child context through agents, tools, and orchestration steps so every call can be assigned to the relevant agent and workflow.
  3. Aggregate in stages. Roll invocation records into agent totals, agent totals into workflow totals, and workflow totals into tenant totals. Preserve the underlying call records for diagnosis.
  4. Track useful unit measures. Compare spend per successful task or decision as well as raw token totals; where relevant, examine cost per reasoning cycle.
  5. Use the results to manage spend. Budgets and CloudWatch alarms can surface spending-limit or unit-cost changes. Per-request visibility can also help identify model choice, agent-cycle count, and tool design as cost-control levers.

These are measurement and operating patterns, not an automatic guarantee of complete agent-level bills. Accurate rollups depend on instrumentation, stable identifiers, correct context propagation, and reconciliation.

Check completeness before trusting an agent total

  • Confirm model invocation logging is enabled in every Region where the workload runs; otherwise request metadata will not appear in those invocation logs.
  • Check that required request fields are present, since Bedrock does not reject calls merely because metadata is missing.
  • Review trace sampling and instrumentation coverage before treating span-derived usage as complete.
  • Compare estimated totals with CUR or Cost Explorer at a compatible model and usage-type level, and keep the two figures labeled separately.
  • Investigate gaps in parent-child propagation or missing agent and workflow IDs before attributing shared costs to a tenant.

The AWS Agentic AI Lens notes that monthly token totals alone are insufficient for useful cost management. Per-request analysis can include request cost, the number of cycles, and how input-token use grows across those cycles; the same analysis can help teams evaluate model selection, cycle limits, and tool design.
