Choose a dedicated server when authoritative game state, competitive fairness, or dependable support for many players matters most; choose a player-hosted peer-to-peer setup when a small session’s lower server-operating burden is worth relying on one player’s connection and availability. Neither option is universally faster or cheaper overall. A player-hosted match is often called P2P, but it may still use matchmaking or relay services; a dedicated server runs separately from players’ game clients.

What the two architectures mean

In peer-to-peer (P2P) networking, players communicate directly with one another. In many games, one participant also acts as the host: that player runs the session’s server functions while playing. This arrangement is commonly called a listen server. It is distinct from a dedicated server, which runs on a separate machine and is not one of the participating players’ game clients. In a dedicated-server design, clients communicate through the game server. Steam’s networking documentation describes the difference between direct player-to-player communication and communication through a dedicated server.

These terms describe who runs the authoritative session and how traffic is routed; they do not, by themselves, determine the matchmaking system, connection quality, or whether a game uses relays. A P2P game may rely on supporting services, and a dedicated server still needs to be placed and operated.

How the trade-offs compare

Decision factor Player-hosted P2P / listen server Dedicated server
Infrastructure and operating cost Can avoid operating a separate authoritative game server, but may still use matchmaking or relay infrastructure. The player host supplies the session host. Requires separate server resources, configuration, networking, and ongoing operation. Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation says dedicated servers are “more expensive and challenging to configure.”
Latency and host advantage The host may have a latency advantage because the host player runs the session. Other players’ latency depends on their route to that host. Every player connects remotely to the server. Latency depends on server location and network route; a poorly located server can be slow for some players.
Authority and fairness The player host is part of the game, so the host’s position and control differ from those of the other participants. The server can hold authoritative game state, giving the game a trusted central point for applying rules and resolving play.
Host or server departure If the host leaves or becomes unavailable, the session can be interrupted. Host migration can elect a replacement host, but must be implemented and does not guarantee seamless continuity. A player disconnecting does not itself remove the separate server. The server still needs to remain available and be operated.
IP privacy and connection setup Direct connections can expose players’ public IP addresses and may encounter peer discovery, NAT, or firewall complications. A relay can change the traffic path and privacy characteristics. Players connect to the server rather than directly to one another. The server still needs to be reachable, and the specific service design determines privacy and connectivity behavior.
Session scale and operational capacity Can suit smaller, lower-stakes sessions when the game accepts host dependence and the team wants to avoid a separate authoritative server. Often a better fit for large sessions or games where trusted, reliable operation matters, including MMOs, MOBAs, and fast-paced shooters. These are use-case examples, not fixed player-count thresholds.

The comparison is conditional, not a ranking. For example, Epic’s Unreal Engine networking overview identifies dedicated servers as useful for high-performance, trusted play, while noting their added cost and configuration effort.

When a player-hosted setup makes sense

Small cooperative or social sessions

A listen server can be a reasonable cost-conscious choice for a small cooperative game or informal group session. It avoids the need to operate a separate authoritative game server, but the team accepts that one player’s connection and continued participation matter to everyone else. Unity’s documentation on client-server architecture and listen servers also notes that the host can have a latency advantage.

Games where host continuity is acceptable

If a host leaving can simply end a casual session, or if players can tolerate a pause while a new host is selected, P2P may be appropriate. Microsoft documents host migration as a way to elect a new host when a P2P host becomes unavailable. It is additional game behavior to design and test, not a promise that every match will continue without interruption.

When direct connectivity needs support

Direct P2P can bring peer discovery, connection-establishment, NAT, and firewall challenges. A game may use relay infrastructure to help carry traffic, so “player-hosted” does not mean “no backend services.” If direct connections create privacy or connectivity concerns, evaluate a relay as a separate part of the design rather than assuming the topology alone solves them.

When to choose a dedicated server

Competitive play and trusted game state

For a competitive game, central server authority can give the game a consistent place to validate and resolve state rather than relying on a participating player’s machine. Epic describes the dedicated server as holding authoritative game state and recommends the model for trusted, fair, reliable operation. That is particularly relevant when the consequences of host advantage or disputed outcomes are high.

Larger sessions and dependable operations

Dedicated servers are generally more suitable when a game expects many concurrent players or needs predictable control over the session. Epic names MMOs, MOBAs, and fast-paced shooters as examples. These categories are guidance rather than a universal threshold: actual capacity depends on the game’s workload, server configuration, and operating plan.

Budget for the operational work

A separate server shifts responsibility to the game team or its infrastructure provider. Account for machine resources, network capacity, configuration, monitoring, and keeping the service available. The architecture can support more centralized control, but it does not make reliability automatic; the server still has to be deployed and maintained.

Latency is a routing question, not a topology guarantee

A listen-server host may have an advantage over other players, but that does not mean every P2P player will have lower latency than they would on a dedicated server. For either design, geography and the route between players and the host or server affect results.

Relays add another routing option rather than a universal speed improvement. Valve says Steam Datagram Relay can improve ping for some players, but can be slower for others, particularly when the dedicated server is not near relay data centers. Measure latency across the regions and routes your players will actually use before making performance promises.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,250 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

IP privacy and relays

Direct P2P connections can reveal players’ public IP addresses to one another, as Steam Support explains in its connection and IP-address guidance. Valve says Steam Datagram Relay can carry traffic without revealing players’ IP addresses and that its traffic is authenticated, encrypted, and rate-limited. Those are capabilities of that specific service; they should not be assumed for every relay or every game’s implementation.

When evaluating a relay, identify whose addresses it hides, which traffic it carries, and how it affects routing in target regions. A relay can address particular privacy or connection concerns, but its effect on latency must be measured rather than presumed.

A practical decision checklist

  • Lean toward a dedicated server if competitive fairness, authoritative state, many concurrent players, or separation from any participant’s availability is central to the game.
  • Consider a listen server if sessions are small and social or cooperative, separate server operations are a poor fit, and the team accepts host advantage and the possibility that a host departure disrupts play.
  • Plan the connection path for either model: assess matchmaking, NAT and firewall behavior, server or host location, and whether relays are needed.
  • Test actual routes in the regions players will use. Neither P2P, a dedicated server, nor a relay guarantees the lowest latency for everyone.
  • Design failure behavior explicitly. Decide whether host migration, reconnecting, or ending a session is appropriate when the host or server becomes unavailable.
