Choose PDFShift when you want HTML-to-PDF conversion through a hosted API and its current limits and data terms suit your use case. Neither is a documented universal winner for speed, fidelity, or cost; test representative documents before committing.
How the two approaches differ
| Consideration | Puppeteer | PDFShift |
|---|---|---|
| Operating model | Run Puppeteer and a browser as part of your application workflow. The documented flow launches a browser, creates a page, navigates to a URL, generates a PDF, then closes the browser. Puppeteer PDF generation guide | Send an HTML-to-PDF conversion request to a hosted API. PDFShift’s product documentation demonstrates a URL source and describes its service as using Chromium. PDFShift |
| Operational ownership | Your team manages browser setup, execution, and orchestration. You can configure Puppeteer’s PDF behavior through its API. | The vendor operates the conversion service; review its current quotas, limits, and service terms. |
| Rendering behavior | Page.pdf() uses print CSS by default. Media emulation and print-color handling can affect the result. Puppeteer Page.pdf() API |
PDFShift says it uses Chromium and accepts conversion configuration. Check the output against your own templates rather than assuming it will match another workflow. |
| Cost basis | The reviewed Puppeteer guide does not state a service price. Infrastructure and operations costs depend on how you deploy the browser workflow. | Published credit tiers and overage terms apply, with usage based on resulting document size; check the current pricing and FAQ before budgeting. |
| Data handling | You control where your browser workflow runs, but the reviewed guide does not establish security or compliance guarantees. | PDFShift publishes data-handling statements, including statements about request and document storage and S3-related storage paths. Review its current terms and configuration for your requirements. |
When Puppeteer is the better fit
Puppeteer is a good fit when browser execution belongs inside infrastructure your team already operates and you need to own the surrounding workflow. Its documented PDF sequence is explicit:
- Launch a browser.
- Create a page and navigate to the content URL.
- Call
page.pdf(). - Close the browser when finished.
The guide notes that PDF generation waits for fonts by default. That helps avoid capturing before fonts are ready, but your templates still need appropriate font availability and loading behavior.
Print CSS, screen CSS, and colors
The Puppeteer API documentation says: “Generates a PDF of the page with the print CSS media type.” If the document should use screen media instead, the docs say to emulate screen before calling page.pdf(). Print rendering also modifies colors by default; the documentation points to -webkit-print-color-adjust to force exact colors. Puppeteer Page.pdf() API

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These defaults can change layout, backgrounds, and other styling. Define print styles deliberately and inspect page breaks, colors, and font rendering in the generated PDF.
When PDFShift is the better fit
PDFShift suits teams that prefer to submit conversion requests to a hosted HTML-to-PDF API rather than operate the browser runtime themselves. Its product information describes Chromium-based rendering. A hosted model transfers browser operations to the provider, but you must still assess its current quotas, timeout and file-size limits, request handling, and data terms.

Published plan details to verify
PDFShift’s pricing page currently lists 50 monthly credits on the free tier. It says one credit covers each 5 MB of resulting data, with a 15 MB maximum file size and a 30-second timeout for that tier. Its FAQ lists the Boost plan at $24 per month for 2,500 credits and $0.03 per overage credit. These are vendor-published terms and may change; confirm the live pricing and FAQ before relying on them. Data handling
PDFShift says it does not store requests or generated documents, while its FAQ also describes some output storage paths using Amazon S3 and says users can send documents to their own S3 storage. Treat these as the company’s stated handling terms, not an independent security or compliance assessment. Review its current privacy terms and configuration against your own data requirements. How to choose for your workload
- Choose Puppeteer if you need to run the browser workflow in your deployment and can support its setup and runtime lifecycle.
- Choose PDFShift if a hosted conversion API is more useful than operating browsers and its current limits, service terms, and data handling meet your needs.
- If both could work, render a representative set of your own templates with each option. Compare layout fidelity, font loading, page breaks, latency at expected concurrency, failure handling, data requirements, and total cost at your actual output sizes.
There is no controlled head-to-head benchmark established here, so claims that one is categorically faster, cheaper, or more faithful would be unsupported. PDFShift displays its own service statistics on its website; those vendor-reported figures are not a comparison with Puppeteer or independent verification.
