A PDFShift timeout can come from the conversion service, your HTTP client, or an intermediary such as a proxy. First check what actually failed: PDFShift documents an HTTP 408 JSON response when a conversion exceeds its time limit, while a client-side timeout may abort the request before PDFShift replies. Then investigate page loading and readiness before changing timeout settings.
Identify which timeout occurred
Record the HTTP status and response body, or the exact exception raised by your application. PDFShift says it returns JSON with HTTP 408 when a conversion takes too long. PDFShift’s FAQ describes the response; a local timeout or abort without a PDFShift response points instead to the caller or an intermediary.
| What you see | Where to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP 408 with a PDFShift response | PDFShift conversion time limit | Review URL/resource loading, processing, readiness waits, and the account limit. |
| Local timeout or abort, no PDFShift response | HTTP client, proxy, or load balancer | Check each layer’s request deadline and compare it with the conversion window. |
| PDF arrives, but a chart, font, or other content is missing | Page readiness | Wait for a signal that the required content has finished rendering. |
| Images are missing, especially below the fold | Lazy loading or failed image requests | Trigger loading deliberately and make the readiness check tolerate failed images. |
The symptoms suggest where to look; they do not prove which resource or component caused a particular failure.
Know the conversion time limit
PDFShift’s FAQ, reviewed on October 3, 2026, states default total conversion timeouts of 30 seconds for free plans and 100 seconds for paid plans. The limit covers loading, processing, and PDF generation—not just the time spent rendering the final PDF. PDFShift says paid customers can contact the provider about an adjustment; the reviewed documentation does not publish a universal configurable maximum. Confirm current limits with the live FAQ because plan details can change.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Your HTTP client needs its own deadline. If it expires before PDFShift’s conversion window, your application may report an abort even though PDFShift would otherwise have continued. PDFShift’s Got guide illustrates a 10-second client timeout, which can be too short for a slower conversion.
Reduce work during URL loading
PDFShift identifies fetching the page and its external resources as a main cause of longer conversion times. Each remote image, stylesheet, script, or font adds work and depends on network availability. The vendor recommends reducing network requests; it also recommends supplying raw HTML when practical. See PDFShift’s conversion-time guidance.

- Send HTML directly when your application has it. This avoids asking PDFShift to fetch the source page URL. Include the markup and the styling needed for the document.
- Inline critical CSS and JavaScript where practical. This reduces dependencies on remote files, though scripts that are not needed for the PDF are better removed.
- Remove unnecessary scripts. Tracking code, widgets, and other code that does not affect the output can create extra requests or processing.
- Optimize images. Use appropriately sized assets, and consider embedding image data when that suits the document and avoids a remote fetch.
- Check the page’s dependencies. Verify the source URL, redirects, images, stylesheets, scripts, and remote fonts are reachable from the conversion environment. The reviewed documentation does not provide a trace format that identifies a specific stalled request, so do not assume which asset is responsible without logs or a reproducible test.
These are vendor recommendations, not guaranteed fixes: a particular page may still time out for another reason.
Wait for the page content your PDF needs
Resource loading can finish before asynchronous content has rendered. A chart may still be drawing, or a font-dependent component may not be ready. PDFShift supports wait_for with a global function that checks a specific condition. Use a signal tied to the content needed in the PDF, such as an application-set flag indicating chart completion, rather than assuming that the page is ready as soon as its network activity ends. See PDFShift’s wait_for guide.

Any readiness wait uses the remaining conversion budget. Keep the condition bounded and meaningful: an unbounded or permanently false condition cannot outlast the overall service timeout.
Account for lazy-loaded images
PDFShift’s guidance notes that it does not usually scroll a page to trigger lazy-loaded images. If images below the fold matter, deliberately trigger their loading and then check their completion state. A strict “all images complete” check can remain false when an image fails, so handle errors as well as successful loads instead of waiting forever. The vendor demonstrates this approach in its lazy-loading guidance.

Check client and intermediary deadlines
- Capture the actual failure. Save the response status and body if present; otherwise record the client exception or abort and whether any response arrived.
- Compare time limits. Check the HTTP library’s timeout and any proxy or load-balancer deadline against the PDFShift plan limit. Set the caller’s deadline long enough to receive the service result, while preserving an appropriate upper bound for your application.
- Reproduce with a controlled source. Compare the problematic URL with a simpler page or an HTML input under the same client settings. This can help separate client configuration from page-specific work, but does not by itself identify a stalled asset.
Do not raise every timeout blindly. A longer client deadline cannot extend PDFShift’s service-side limit, and a longer service allowance does not fix unreachable resources or a readiness condition that never becomes true.

PDFShift’s FAQ states a default maximum of 50 parallel conversions, reviewed October 3, 2026. For batch workloads, compare peak concurrent requests with that documented default and ask PDFShift about a custom solution if your workload needs more. This is a separate diagnostic: the documentation does not establish that parallelism alone caused any individual HTTP 408.

If the real task is to capture a clean image of a web page rather than generate a PDF through PDFShift, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP capture of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a PDFShift HTTP 408 mean my HTTP client timed out?
No. PDFShift documents HTTP 408 as its conversion timeout response. A client-side timeout usually appears as a local exception or abort without that service response.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes raising my client timeout raise PDFShift’s conversion limit?
No. The client deadline and PDFShift’s service-side conversion limit are separate.
