PCI Express (PCIe) replaced conventional PCI’s shared parallel bus with a scalable, point-to-point serial connection. It kept the PCI software programming model, but not the same physical slot or electrical interface: an old PCI card generally needs a real PCIe-to-PCI bridge, not just a passive adapter.

How PCI and PCIe differ

Conventional PCI is a shared parallel local bus. PCIe is a serial interconnect that gives a device a point-to-point link to the system. In its description of PCIe, PCI-SIG characterizes it as a high-performance, general-purpose serial I/O interconnect for enterprise, desktop, mobile, communications and embedded platforms.

Aspect Conventional PCI PCI Express (PCIe)
Signaling and topology Parallel signals on a shared bus Serial signals on point-to-point links
Scaling Shared bus with a fixed width One or more lanes can be aggregated into different link widths
Software model PCI programming model Retains key PCI software attributes, including the usage model, load-store architecture and software interfaces, according to Intel’s specification overview
Physical and electrical connection Conventional PCI connector and signaling PCIe connector and signaling; a legacy PCI card does not directly fit or operate as a PCIe card
Deployment Conventional expansion-bus use Desktop, server, mobile, communications and embedded designs

The distinction between software compatibility and hardware compatibility is essential. Keeping the programming model eased migration for software and operating systems; it did not make the old and new cards interchangeable. PCI-SIG maintains separate specifications for conventional PCI and PCIe, as well as a dedicated PCIe-to-PCI/PCI-X bridge specification.

Why systems moved from a shared parallel bus to PCIe

PCIe’s design makes it possible to allocate link scale to the device. A lower-bandwidth device can use fewer lanes, while a device needing a wider connection can use more. This flexibility, together with fewer pins and less design complexity than a parallel implementation, made PCIe a more scalable architecture.

PCI-SIG describes support for lane widths including x1, x2, x4, x8, x12, x16 and x32. A wider link aggregates more lanes; the “x” number does not by itself state a data rate. The link’s generation and signaling rate also matter, as do encoding and protocol overhead and the workload.

What x1 and x16 mean

The number after “x” is the lane width: x1 means one lane, and x16 means sixteen lanes aggregated into a link. Lane width describes the connection’s scale, not whether a card will work in a particular computer. Check the card and system documentation for the supported slot, lane configuration, power and physical clearance.

Published bandwidth figures must be read with their generation and context. PCI-SIG’s FAQ presents 16.0 GB/s as scalable bandwidth at the initial 2.5 GHz signaling rate; that is an architecture-specific figure, not a universal rate for PCIe devices. Intel’s PCI Express architecture overview gives up to 32 GB/s of bi-directional bandwidth for a PCIe 3.0 x16 connector. Neither figure should be treated as the usable bandwidth of every PCIe link: generation, lane count, encoding, protocol overhead and workload affect what a device can use.

Can you use an old PCI card in a PCIe slot?

Not directly. Conventional PCI and PCIe have separate connectors and electrical interfaces. A passive adapter that only changes the shape of a connector cannot, by itself, translate between their signaling systems.

To use a legacy PCI or PCI-X device with a PCIe system, the solution generally requires an active bridge that translates between the interfaces. PCI-SIG’s dedicated bridge specification is evidence of that distinct hardware requirement. Before buying a bridge adapter, verify the card’s interface, the adapter’s supported bridge type, the host slot, required power, firmware support, operating-system drivers and available space. A bridge addresses the interface mismatch; it does not guarantee that a particular card’s driver or software will work on a given system.

PCIe is used beyond desktop expansion slots

PCIe is an interconnect family, not only the familiar slots used for desktop add-in cards. The PC/104 Consortium documents PCIe/104 and PCI/104-Express as stackable modular embedded implementations that use PCI Express while retaining software compatibility with existing PCI infrastructure. This lets embedded designs use PCIe in a different physical format from a desktop motherboard slot.

What to check before choosing a PCIe card or bridge

  • Interface: Confirm whether the card is conventional PCI, PCI-X or PCIe. Similar names do not mean interchangeable connectors.
  • Slot and lane width: Check the host’s connector and supported lane configuration against the card’s requirements.
  • Generation: Verify supported PCIe generations in the card and system documentation; the cited bandwidth figures apply to specific contexts, not every generation.
  • Power and clearance: Check the system’s available power and the card’s physical dimensions, including any riser or extension arrangement.
  • Firmware and drivers: Confirm that the system firmware and operating system support the card. For a legacy card, check that the bridge supports its interface and that usable drivers are available.
