To recover from a failed RAM overclock, clear CMOS using the procedure in your exact motherboard manual, then enter BIOS and load its default settings. Do not guess which pins to short: boards use different reset methods and layouts.
Find the right reset procedure for your motherboard
Clearing CMOS can restore BIOS settings after an unstable memory overclock. ASUS describes it as a recovery option for instability, crashes, or freezes after CPU or memory overclock changes; MSI recommends it for problems caused by incorrect memory-overclock settings.
- Identify the exact motherboard model. Check the board’s label, original documentation, or system information if the PC can still reach it.
- Open that model’s manufacturer manual. Find the clear-CMOS instructions and diagram. Confirm whether the board uses a dedicated button, a clear-CMOS header, or battery removal.
- Follow the manual’s safety and timing instructions. Do not assume that a pin location, wait time, or method from another motherboard applies to yours.
ASUS specifically advises checking the model manual to determine whether a board uses CLRTC pins or a clear-CMOS button. The methods are alternatives for boards that document them, not interchangeable steps.

If the manual specifies a button
Shut down and use the clear-CMOS button exactly as the manual directs, including its required power state and any hold time. Do not substitute pin shorting or battery removal unless the manual also documents that method.

If the manual specifies clear-CMOS pins
Turn off the computer before handling the pins. Unplug the power cord if the manual requires it; GIGABYTE’s cited motherboard manual specifically says to turn off the computer and unplug the cord before clearing CMOS values. Use only the header and contact method shown in your board’s manual. Some instructions call for a jumper; MSI also documents using a screwdriver to short JBAT1. That tool is appropriate only when the board’s instructions specify the corresponding procedure.
If the manual specifies battery removal
Follow the manual’s instructions for powering down, removing and reinstalling the battery, and waiting before replacement. Do not apply another manufacturer’s wait time to your board. For example, MSI’s battery-reset guidance specifies 3–5 minutes for that procedure; it is not a universal duration.

Restore BIOS defaults after the reset
- Restore power and start the PC.
- Enter BIOS/UEFI using the prompt or the key specified by the motherboard manual.
- Choose the BIOS option to load optimized defaults or setup defaults, then save the changes. ASUS also advises setting the date and time if needed; GIGABYTE directs users to load optimized defaults or configure settings.
- Leave the failed memory-overclock setting disabled for now. Once the system is stable, consult the motherboard and memory documentation before changing memory settings again.
A CMOS reset does not guarantee a successful POST, and there is no single memory-training duration or restart count that applies to every board. Allow the system to follow its documented startup behavior rather than repeatedly interrupting it based on a guessed timer.

Use diagnostics supported for your exact motherboard instead of repeating an unidentified pin procedure. MSI’s guidance for a continuing DRAM condition includes testing one memory stick at a time in the recommended slot or slots, checking CPU socket pins, and using Flash BIOS only if the motherboard supports it. Check the model’s documentation before attempting any of these steps; Flash BIOS is not a universal recovery option.
