PC audio ports connect headphones, microphones, speakers, and other audio equipment—but they do not all do the same job. On a typical desktop, green is headphone or speaker output, blue is line input, and pink is microphone input. Labels and the computer’s manual are more reliable than color alone, especially when identifying a headset jack or surround-sound outputs.

What are PC audio ports?

PC audio ports are the sockets and connectors a computer uses to send audio to other devices or receive audio from them. Common options include analog 3.5 mm jacks, USB, HDMI or DisplayPort, and—on some systems—optical or coaxial S/PDIF. Each connection has different capabilities, so the right one depends on your device and whether you need playback, microphone input, recording input, or multichannel sound.

What do the common 3.5 mm jacks mean?

Many desktop computers have separate analog jacks for audio output, line input, and microphone input. In a common color scheme, green is output, blue is line input, and pink is microphone input. Intel’s guide also describes a common six-jack surround layout that adds outputs for rear, center/subwoofer, and side speakers.

Label or common color Role What to connect
Headphone, line out, or front speaker out; often green or lime Sends analog sound from the PC Headphones or powered speakers
Line in; often light blue Receives an analog audio signal An external audio source
Mic in; often pink Receives microphone input A microphone, if the port is a separate mic input
Rear speaker out; often black in Intel’s example Sends the rear-speaker channels in a multichannel setup Rear speakers
Center/subwoofer out; often orange in Intel’s example Sends center and subwoofer channels in a multichannel setup Center speaker and subwoofer
Side speaker out; often silver in Intel’s example Sends side-speaker channels in a multichannel setup Side speakers

The colors are a guide, not a guarantee. Some computers omit jacks, use symbols instead of colors, or assign a jack differently depending on the audio configuration. ASUS notes that its line-out jack can serve as front-speaker output in multichannel configurations. Check the socket’s label or icon and the manual for the exact PC or motherboard.

Where should you plug in headphones or a headset?

Headphones with no microphone

Plug a standard analog headphone connector into the jack marked headphones, line out, or front speaker out. A headphone-only plug carries audio out; it does not provide microphone input.

A headset with one plug

A single-plug headset needs a PC jack that supports both headphone output and microphone input, often marked with a headset icon. If the computer instead has separate headphone and microphone sockets, the headset may need a compatible 3.5 mm splitter that separates its headphone and microphone connections. Do not assume that any headphone jack accepts a microphone: plug wiring and jack capabilities must match.

What other PC audio connections are there?

USB

USB headsets and speakers connect as separate audio devices rather than using the PC’s analog sound jacks. If sound does not come through the connected device, select the intended playback or recording device in your operating system’s audio settings.

How to identify the right port

  1. Check the connector on your audio device. Determine whether it uses a 3.5 mm plug, USB, optical or coaxial input, or an HDMI/DisplayPort connection.
  2. Decide what the connection must do. Headphone playback needs an output; a microphone needs an input; a line-level source needs line in; surround speakers may need several assigned outputs.
  3. Read the PC’s labels and icons. Distinguish a headphone output, separate microphone input, and headset combo jack before connecting a headset.
  4. Consult the exact computer or motherboard manual. Use it to confirm jack functions, combo-jack support, multichannel assignments, and available digital outputs.
  5. Select the audio device if needed. For USB or display audio, choose the intended playback or recording endpoint in the operating system’s audio settings.

What if the port or device does not work?

  • No headphone sound: Confirm that the plug is in an output jack, then check that the intended playback device is selected.
  • The headset microphone is not detected: Check whether the PC has a combo jack or separate headphone and microphone jacks. A single-plug headset connected to separate sockets may require a compatible splitter.
  • Sound comes from the wrong device: Check the selected playback endpoint, especially when a USB headset or HDMI/DisplayPort display is connected.
  • A surround speaker jack behaves unexpectedly: Verify the channel assignment and audio configuration in the computer or motherboard documentation; a jack’s role may change with configuration.
  • The colors or layout do not match: Use the printed labels, icons, and model-specific manual. Color conventions are not universal.
