Pastmaps lets you search a place, open a historical map, and compare it with the modern landscape using an opacity slider. The browser-based service says its collection covers the US, UK, and Ireland, with more than 500,000 maps spanning over 200 years. It’s a useful way to explore how a town or neighborhood changed—not proof of a property’s exact age or a definitive account of local history.

How Pastmaps works

Start with a place: search for a town, city, or other location, then choose from the suggested places and available historical maps. Pastmaps displays the selected map over a modern map. Adjust the opacity slider to fade between the old map and current surroundings, making it easier to spot differences in streets, buildings, waterways, and other mapped features.

The basic workflow is described in Fast Company’s October 3, 2026 feature. The current coverage and feature descriptions below reflect Pastmaps’ official website, reviewed October 7, 2026.

What places and periods can you explore?

Pastmaps says it has more than 500,000 historical maps covering the US, UK, and Ireland, with maps spanning more than 200 years; some examples date to the 1700s. These are figures published by the company, not independently audited measures. Coverage and map availability can vary by location, so a region’s presence in the service does not guarantee a map for every street or year.

  • Classic Edition Decor That's Also a Real Reference: A 50" x 32" decorative-yet-functional world wall map with antique-style accents that give it an upscale, library-shelf feel while keeping the up-to-date political boundaries and place names of a current Rand McNally reference map
  • Color-Matched Topographical Relief: Mountain ranges, plateaus and elevation changes shown in a coordinated color palette for at-a-glance identification of major physical features around the world
  • Africa-Centered Projection: A less-common projection that allows viewers to see every continent and country complete and intact — without the splits and edge-distortions of standard Pacific- or Atlantic-centered maps
  • Laminated for Durability, Rolled for Shipping: Laminated to resist scuffs and fingerprints in classrooms, offices and homes; ships rolled in a white cardboard tube with cap to arrive crease-free and ready to hang
  • Trusted Since 1856 — Made in the USA: Rand McNally has been the most trusted source for maps, directions and travel content for 170 years; designed and printed in the United States

The current official site lists the US, UK, and Ireland. Fast Company’s feature described US-only coverage, a narrower description that does not match Pastmaps’ current stated scope.

What can you use it to find?

Pastmaps presents historical maps as a way to investigate changes to familiar places. Depending on the maps available for a location, comparing old and current views may help you look for former roads, waterways, settlements, or structures. It may also provide a visual starting point for family-history research or exploration.

  • Neighborhood changes: See how mapped streets and landscape features differ from the present-day view.
  • Property and home history: Look for a building or road on older maps, while treating map dates and symbols as clues rather than proof of a precise construction date.
  • Genealogy: Explore maps around places connected to family history; a map alone cannot establish that an ancestor lived at a particular address.
  • Outdoor exploration and education: Pastmaps promotes uses including hiking, metal detecting, research, and classroom projects. These are suggested applications from the company, not independently verified outcomes.

Other map layers and downloads

Beyond historical maps, Pastmaps lists 3D terrain, satellite imagery, and LiDAR among its available features. The site also describes high-resolution image and KMZ downloads. KMZ files can be used with mapping tools such as Google Earth, Gaia GPS, Avenza, and CalTopo. Availability of these features depends on the account access shown by Pastmaps.

What a historical map can—and cannot—tell you

An overlay is a discovery tool, not a substitute for a property record, archival source, or careful historical research. Maps vary in date, detail, purpose, and accuracy; a feature appearing or disappearing between maps does not by itself establish exactly when or why a change happened. Use what you find as a lead, then verify important claims against appropriate records and sources.
