If saved passwords seem to have disappeared after updating to iOS 18 or 18.5, open Apple’s Passwords app, tap All, and check Deleted before changing sync settings. Apple’s documentation describes several reasons credentials may be hidden or unavailable, but does not confirm that iOS 18.5 itself deleted passwords.

Find passwords in the iOS 18 Passwords app

iOS 18 introduced the Passwords app, which brings saved website and app credentials together with passkeys, verification codes, and other saved information. Open Passwords, authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode, then select All. A category filter, a Shared Group, or another selected view can make an account look missing. Apple’s iPhone guide explains the app and its categories.

Recover a password from Deleted

If you deleted an entry, Apple says it can be recovered for 30 days. Open Passwords > Deleted, select the account, and tap Recover. After 30 days, Apple says the password is permanently deleted. Apple’s recovery instructions cover this process.

Restore iCloud Keychain sync

Passwords and other Keychain items synchronize separately from an iCloud device backup. Apple notes that Keychain items are not included in iCloud backup because they regularly sync to iCloud. So, after restoring an iPhone, give Keychain time to sync rather than assuming the items were part of the backup itself. Apple’s troubleshooting guide describes the distinction.

Separate missing passwords from Safari AutoFill problems

If an entry appears in Passwords but Safari does not suggest it, the credential may be present while AutoFill is off. Go to Settings > General > AutoFill & Passwords and turn on AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys. Safari Private Browsing does not save account names and passwords, so a login used there may not have been saved.

Choose the recovery path that matches the problem

What you find What to do
The entry appears under All or another category It was hidden by the selected view; use All or the relevant category.
The entry is under Deleted Select it and tap Recover, provided it is still within Apple’s 30-day recovery window.
The entry is absent on one device but available on another Check Passwords & Keychain sync on the affected iPhone and complete any device-approval prompt.
The item belongs to a Shared Group Check the group and whether the participating devices have compatible software; Apple identifies software compatibility as a possible issue for shared passwords.
The entry is in Passwords but not offered in Safari Enable AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys in Settings; check whether the login was used in Private Browsing.
No trusted device is available Use Apple’s account recovery options, including a Recovery Contact if configured, or follow the iCloud Keychain escrow recovery process.

If you have lost every trusted device

Apple documents Recovery Contact assistance and iCloud Keychain escrow as recovery options. Escrow recovery requires Apple Account authentication, an SMS response to a trusted phone number, and the device passcode. Apple allows 10 authentication attempts; after repeated failures, the escrow record is locked and Apple Support must grant additional attempts. Apple’s iPhone Keychain recovery guidance provides the relevant details.

Did iOS 18.5 delete saved passwords?

Apple’s documentation does not confirm that iOS 18.5 itself deleted passwords. The documented possibilities include a different Passwords view, a deleted item still recoverable from Deleted, disabled or incomplete iCloud Keychain sync, an unapproved device, Shared Group compatibility, or AutoFill settings. Check those conditions before concluding that the update erased the credentials.

How iCloud Keychain protects saved credentials

Apple says iCloud Keychain uses 256-bit AES encryption in storage and transmission, and that its data cannot be read by Apple. The same synchronization design means Keychain items are handled separately from iCloud device backups, as described above.
