A password is the broad term for a secret used to authenticate you. A passcode usually means a numeric code, often one that unlocks a device or approves an action. The terms overlap: a PIN can be a password in technical guidance, while a device passcode may work locally rather than being sent to an online account.

How password, passcode, PIN, and passphrase differ

Products do not use these labels consistently, so the purpose of a secret matters more than its name. In its digital identity guidance, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) treats a password as a secret authenticator—a “something you know” factor—and defines a PIN as a password that typically consists only of decimal digits. A passphrase is a password made from a sequence of words or other text. NIST SP 800-63B-4 and the NIST glossary describe these terms.

Term Usual meaning What to keep in mind
Password A secret used as an authentication factor; it may contain letters, digits, symbols, or words. It is the broader category.
Passphrase A password made from a sequence of words or other text. It can make a longer secret easier to remember.
PIN A password that typically consists only of decimal digits. It may authenticate an account or serve a local device function.
Device passcode or unlock PIN A code entered on a device to unlock it or approve access. If it locally unlocks an authenticator, NIST calls it an activation secret; it may not be sent to the service you are accessing.
One-time passcode (OTP) A generated secret intended for one use. Unlike a stable password or unlock code, it is meant to be used once.

The word “passcode” alone does not tell you whether a code is a device unlock secret, an account credential, or a one-time code. Check what the prompt is asking you to access and where the code comes from.

Why a phone passcode is different from an account password

When you type an account password into a website, that secret is used in the account’s authentication flow with the service. A phone’s unlock PIN can have a different job: it may unlock access to a key or other authenticator stored on the device. NIST calls a local password or PIN used this way an activation secret. It stays within the authenticator and its associated endpoint instead of being sent to the remote service as the account password would be.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

This distinction helps explain why a phone may ask for its passcode when you use a passkey. The passcode can unlock the device that holds or uses the passkey; it is not necessarily the password for the account you are signing into. The exact behavior depends on the device and service.

How to make passwords and account access safer

  • Use a unique password for each account. Reusing one secret means a breach at one service can put other accounts at risk.
  • Use a password manager for accounts that still require passwords. NIST recommends a password manager that supports multi-factor authentication (MFA). Its consumer guidance recommends at least 15 characters for a password and explains that a passphrase can help with memorability. See NIST’s password guidance.
  • Turn on MFA where available. It adds another authentication step, rather than relying on the password alone.
  • Use passkeys when a service supports them. NIST says passkeys avoid memorization and are less susceptible to phishing theft. A device PIN may still be required to unlock the device used with a passkey.

For centrally verified passwords, NIST SP 800-63B-4 (2025) sets a minimum of 15 characters when the password is used as a single factor. When it is used only as part of an MFA process, the standard permits a minimum of eight characters. The standard also disallows extra character-composition rules and routine password changes unless there is evidence of compromise. A service or device may set its own requirements.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Length helps with password strength, but it does not stop phishing, keylogging, or social engineering. NIST states in SP 800-63B-4 that “Passwords are not phishing-resistant.” That statement concerns passwords as an authenticator type under the guideline; it does not mean that every numeric passcode is less secure than every password. Security also depends on unpredictability, verification methods, rate limits, device protections, and what the secret unlocks.

Which term should you use?

In everyday use, “password” usually refers to an account secret, while “passcode” often refers to a numeric code for a phone, app, or action. That is a common convention, not a universal technical distinction. If a prompt is unclear, look at the account or device it names and whether it asks for a stored unlock code, an account credential, or a temporary code sent or generated for one-time use.
