We evaluate password managers by examining how they handle credentials, autofill, password generation, security and privacy evidence, supported platforms, usability, and plan value. A recommendation should make clear what was actually tested, on which versions and devices, for how long, and what remains unverified. The method below sets out a repeatable framework; it does not claim that iTechGuides has performed hands-on tests of any particular product.
What do we test in a password manager?
The core evaluation follows the tasks people rely on a password manager to perform: capture credentials, store them in a protected vault, retrieve them for sign-in, and generate distinct passwords. PCMag describes these functions as part of its testing methodology (PCMag’s password-manager testing method).
- Credential capture and replay: Check whether the manager offers to save credentials after sign-in and can use the saved entry on a later visit.
- Vault behavior: Examine the vendor’s description of how vault data is protected and observe relevant behavior available in the tested apps. Distinguish observable behavior from architecture claims that cannot be independently confirmed in a product review.
- Form filling and autofill: Try saved credentials on representative login forms and record whether the manager identifies the right fields, fills them accurately, and lets the user control when credentials are submitted.
- Password generation: Check whether the generator can create distinct passwords and whether its options are clear enough to use for the account or service being set up.
These checks establish whether the basic workflow works in the tested cases; they do not prove that a service is secure in every environment or against every threat.

Password managers can behave differently between a browser extension, desktop app, and mobile app. Coverage should therefore identify the actual operating systems, devices, browsers and versions, extensions, and evaluation period—not simply say that a product works on “desktop and mobile.” Security.org describes testing desktop and mobile browsers, autofill, sync, and extension support as part of its password-manager review process (Security.org’s password-manager methodology and reviews).

For each product under comparison, use a consistent set of supported environments and the same test cases where possible. Record any exceptions, such as an unavailable app or browser, rather than assuming parity across platforms.
- Install and configure the supported apps and browser extensions included in the evaluation.
- Check whether a saved or updated entry becomes available on the other tested devices, and record the conditions and time involved rather than implying untested sync behavior.
- Try autofill on representative login forms in each tested browser or mobile environment.
- Record setup friction, prompts, errors, and recovery steps encountered during the stated test period.
Security.org says its own reviews include multi-week daily-use testing. That is an example of another publisher’s process, not a claim about iTechGuides testing or a universal minimum duration.

How do we assess autofill and sign-in reliability?
Autofill needs to be assessed in context. A single successful login does not establish consistent behavior across sites, browsers, or devices. Reviews should state which environments and login forms were tried and report observed failures as well as successes.
- Use the same representative sign-in cases for each product in a comparison.
- Test whether the manager recognizes the saved account and places the username and password into the intended fields.
- Observe whether the user can review or select an entry before it is filled, and whether any submission behavior is clear.
- Repeat the cases across the stated supported desktop and mobile environments, documenting differences rather than extrapolating.
NIST’s July 2025 SP 800-63B-4 says systems should support autofill for safe retrieval of secrets from password managers and recommends allowing copy and paste for people using other password-storage tools. NIST’s implementation FAQ states, “SP 800-63B-4 requires verifiers to allow the use of password managers and autofill functionality” (NIST SP 800-63-4 Implementation Resources FAQ). This is guidance for digital identity systems, not a certification of any password manager.

How do we check whether a password manager is secure?
A security review separates what the provider says from what the reviewer can substantiate. Feature lists and marketing descriptions are not, by themselves, independent verification of security.
- Architecture and protection: Read the provider’s published security documentation and explain what it says about vault protection. Label vendor statements as such unless independently verified.
- Account protection: Record available multifactor authentication options and test relevant setup or sign-in flows only when they are within the review’s stated scope.
- Privacy: Read the privacy terms and examine what data the provider says it collects or uses.
- Incident response: Review public incident disclosures and the provider’s stated response. Do not infer that no incident occurred merely because none was identified in the reviewed materials.
- Independent evidence: Identify any available independent audit evidence precisely, including its stated scope; do not imply an audit covers more than it does.
NIST SP 800-63B-4 also discusses multifactor cryptographic authenticators and activation factors, making MFA a reasonable evaluation area. That guidance does not establish that a particular physical security key works with a particular password manager. Compatibility must be tested for the specific combination before a review claims it.

How do we compare usability, recovery, features, and value?
Security features matter only alongside the practical work of adopting and using the product. The review should cover onboarding, routine tasks, available support, migration or export steps that were actually tested, additional features, and plan restrictions. A larger feature count is not a security result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Onboarding and daily use: Describe the tested setup and common tasks, including friction or unclear steps.
- Migration and recovery: Report only the import, export, account-recovery, or support workflows actually attempted. Do not generalize from one tested route to every service or account.
- Features and plan limits: Identify which features are available on the reviewed plan and note restrictions that affect ordinary use.
- Price and support: Date price and plan information, state the relevant geography, and distinguish recurring prices from temporary offers. Describe support options based on current published information or tested contact attempts.
PCMag’s method considers usability, features, and value as well as security; Security.org also describes checking features, support, and plan factors. These are comparison dimensions, not a universal scoring formula.

How do we score products fairly?
If a review assigns numerical scores, it should publish the criteria and weights so readers can understand what drives the result. The cited review methods use different criteria and approaches; they do not establish a universal weighting for password-manager reviews. When products are compared, apply the same test set and time window where practical, explain exceptions, and avoid unsupported test counts, reliability rates, or performance figures.
