Pas a Pas is a child-focused stop-motion system designed to help pupils explore ideas by arranging physical objects and turning them into animations. It combines a camera, display platform, guided activities, and shareable animation collections. It is best understood today as a documented design project, not as equipment whose current availability for purchase has been established.
What is Pas a Pas?
Credited to designer Ishac Bertran, Pas a Pas was conceived as an interactive educational tool for schools. Its purpose is to connect the hands-on process of moving objects frame by frame with concepts in mathematics, physics, and the arts. The documented system brings together a camera, a platform for recording and displaying animations, a child-facing interface, physical sets of pieces, and a community for sharing work. Ishac Bertran’s project page describes it as a way for children to learn and experiment with different sets of elements through animation.
The project has three modes:
- Assistant: guides children through placing elements for each frame.
- Director: lets children make their own movies using the supplied pieces or other objects.
- Collection: lets children browse animations recorded on their own school platform or remote school platforms. Teachers can create and share exercises.
How does Pas a Pas work in a classroom?
In a guided activity, the screen shows colored shapes and the child places matching blocks over them. Pressing record captures a frame, then the display moves on to the next one. Once the sequence is complete, the child can watch the resulting animation loop. In the open-ended mode, children can animate objects of their own choosing without on-screen prompts. New Atlas’s description of the project also notes that cartridges supply predetermined animation patterns and matching shape sets; its geometry set was reported as targeting ages 4–6.
This guided-to-open-ended progression gives a teacher a way to introduce frame-by-frame sequencing before inviting pupils to invent their own scenes. It also makes the physical choices visible: children move pieces themselves, capture each change, and see the sequence become motion.

What learning evidence is available?
The project was designed to make abstract ideas more tangible through physical manipulation and animation. The Interaction Design Association project description characterizes it as a child-focused interface with curriculum-based exercises that support learning through play and creation. Bertran’s account says teacher research, co-creation, tutorial validation, and feedback from professional animators informed the design; the project documentation also says testing took place in a Montessori kindergarten.
IxDA reports that children and teachers in kindergartens validated the design: children used the device fluently, found its guidance engaging and challenging, and encountered geometry exercises alongside more complex animation in free mode. The award documentation frames the approach around self-directed learning, indirect teaching, and multi-age groups. These are reports of usability and design validation, not a controlled study demonstrating measured learning gains. The available project accounts do not provide a named statistical study or attainment figure.

Can schools still buy Pas a Pas?
The project is documented as a 2010 design project and a 2012 award-era concept, but the available project and award pages do not establish current manufacture, licensing, procurement, or retail stock. Treat Pas a Pas as a historical design reference unless its owner confirms otherwise; do not assume a present-day product listing is for the original system.

The central idea does not depend on the original hardware. A classroom can make a similar stop-motion activity with movable objects, a stable camera or tablet, and an app that captures images frame by frame. A French academic education resource from DRANE likewise identifies manipulated objects, a stabilized tablet or camera, and a stop-motion application as basic requirements for creating the illusion of movement image by image. DRANE’s stop-motion resource provides that modern classroom framing.

- Camera and stability: Use a tablet or camera held firmly in place so the background does not jump between frames.
- Objects or pieces: Blocks, paper shapes, classroom materials, or toys can stand in for dedicated Pas a Pas pieces.
- Stop-motion app: Choose an app that captures a frame after each small movement and plays the sequence back.
- Activity prompts: For guided work, prepare a simple sequence or shape pattern for children to reproduce; then let them try an open-ended animation.
A modern stop-motion animation kit for kids may bundle child-friendly objects with equipment or a stand, but it is a substitute for the workflow, not the original Pas a Pas device. Check what the listing actually includes, especially a stable camera or tablet arrangement and suitable physical pieces.
