Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →These messages usually mean Windows or another program has an open handle on the volume, so CHKDSK or PartitionMagic cannot get the exclusive access needed to check or change it. Start with a read-only check, back up accessible files, and use CHKDSK with /f for repairs; if the target is the Windows volume, schedule the repair for restart rather than forcing it offline while Windows is using it.
What “cannot lock” and “cannot open volume for direct access” mean
CHKDSK needs to lock a volume before it can repair file-system errors. Windows or another process may already be using it. Microsoft notes that CHKDSK run without /f on an active partition can report spurious errors because it cannot lock the drive. Microsoft Support also identifies third-party virus checkers and disk-monitor tools as possible causes of direct-access errors.
PartitionMagic reports a similar problem when it cannot lock a partition. Its documentation calls error 27 “Cannot lock drive” and explains that open files—including operating-system files and the paging file—can prevent the lock. Error 993 indicates that the partition contains open files; the documented response is to use the operating system’s check utility.
How to check and repair the volume safely
Before repairing, copy any accessible important files or verify that you have a backup. PartitionMagic’s documentation recommends checking without repair first, then applying repairs to confirmed errors.

#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Confirm the drive letter. Identify the intended volume in File Explorer or Disk Management before entering a command. Replacing
X:below with the wrong drive letter checks a different volume. - Open an elevated Command Prompt. Search for Command Prompt from Start and choose Run as administrator. Microsoft says CHKDSK repair operations require membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent permissions.
- Run a read-only check first:
chkdsk X:. Without repair switches, CHKDSK reports status rather than correcting errors. On an active volume it may be unable to lock the drive, so treat a lock-related result as inconclusive rather than proof that the file system is damaged. - Repair logical file-system errors:
chkdsk X: /f. The/fswitch fixes errors and requires CHKDSK to lock the volume. If Windows says the volume is in use and asks whether to schedule the check for the next restart, accept the prompt for the Windows system volume and restart when ready. - Retry a direct-access failure only after checking for a locker. Temporarily stop or disable the third-party antivirus, disk-monitor, backup, or similar service that may be holding the partition; reboot and retry. Microsoft Support documents this as a resolution for the direct-access error. Re-enable protection or monitoring after the check.
When to schedule a check and when not to force a dismount
For a busy system volume, allowing Windows to schedule chkdsk X: /f for restart is the safer route: the check can run before the normal session has the volume open. The restart interrupts normal access while the check runs, so save work and allow the process to complete.
The /x switch is different: chkdsk X: /x forces the volume to dismount first and also includes /f. Microsoft warns that open handles are invalidated. Programs using the volume can be interrupted, and unsaved work or active operations may be affected. Use it only when you understand that impact and can tolerate the interruption; it is not a harmless way to bypass a lock on a system drive.

Which approach fits the problem?
| Choice | What it does | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| CHKDSK without repair switches | Reports status without correcting errors; it may not be able to lock an active volume. | Initial diagnosis before deciding whether to repair. |
CHKDSK with /f while Windows is running |
Repairs logical errors but needs an exclusive lock; Windows can offer to schedule it for restart if the volume is in use. | A volume that can be locked, or a system volume checked at restart. |
CHKDSK with /x |
Forces a dismount, invalidates open handles, and includes /f. |
Only when you can accept the interruption and consequences of taking the volume offline. |
| PartitionMagic check or operation | Works only on partitions it can lock; open files can prevent the operation. | A lockable partition on a system where that legacy release is known to be compatible. |
| Windows check utility or PartitionMagic rescue media | Runs outside the normal Windows session or uses the operating system’s own checking utility. | A busy system partition that PartitionMagic cannot lock; PartitionMagic’s older guide describes rescue diskettes or boot mode. |
What to do if PartitionMagic still cannot lock the drive
Close programs that may be using the partition and retry only if the volume is accessible and your data is backed up. If files remain open because Windows is using the partition, use Windows CHKDSK or the operating system’s check utility instead of trying to make PartitionMagic alter a volume it cannot lock. PartitionMagic’s manuals describe Windows 95/98/NT-era behavior and rescue diskettes; they do not establish compatibility with current Windows installations. Do not assume an old PartitionMagic release is supported on a modern Windows PC.
