A partially threaded wood screw has a smooth shank near the head and threads farther down. In a wood-to-wood joint, that smooth section passes through the first piece while the threads grip the second, drawing the pieces together as the screw tightens. To get that clamping action, choose a screw whose unthreaded shank spans the first piece, then check the exact model’s dimensions, head, drive, material, coating and approval for the job.
How partial threads draw two pieces of wood together
When the smooth shank clears the first piece and the threads engage the receiving piece, the screw head bears against the first piece as it tightens. This pulls the two members together. Fischer describes its partially threaded screws as able to clamp wooden components firmly against each other; SPAX explains that the partial thread extends along only part of the screw.
This draw-up action depends on the joint and screw geometry. If threads catch in the first piece before the pieces meet, they can resist the intended pull-together effect. The shank length therefore matters as much as the overall screw length.

How to choose a screw for a wood joint
- Measure the first piece. Identify the thickness the screw must pass through before it reaches the receiving timber.
- Match the thread-free shank to that thickness. SPAX advises that the thread-free part should be at least as long as the plate being fastened. Schmid’s installation guide similarly says the mounting timber must be no thicker than the shank length for the thread to be fully embedded in the load-bearing timber. Check the dimensions of the particular screw rather than relying on a product category label.
- Check diameter and total length against the joint. The screw must extend far enough into the receiving member for the intended application, but there is no universal length formula or load rating established for all partially threaded screws.
- Choose head and drive for the connection. A countersunk head can sit flush when the material and installation call for it. A flange or washer-style head provides a different bearing surface. Confirm the head’s bearing needs and use a driver bit that fits the screw’s drive. Head style alone does not establish load capacity.
- Verify material, exposure and approval. Check that the screw’s material or coating suits the wood and exposure, and that its technical documentation or approval covers the intended use. Do not assume that a screw described for timber work is suitable for every structural connection or outdoor condition.
What manufacturer examples can—and cannot—tell you
| Example | Documented details | What to verify for your project |
|---|---|---|
| fischer PowerFast FPF II STP BC | Part thread, TX drive, step countersunk head, timber applications and ETA-19/0175 are listed on the product page. | Check the chosen variant’s dimensions and approval conditions against the joint. |
| fischer PowerFast FPF II WTP BC, 8.0 × 100 mm example | 8 mm diameter, 100 mm overall length, 60 mm thread length and TX40 drive. | Confirm that this geometry and documented application fit the actual members and design. |
| Simpson Strong-Tie SWC | Described in the 2026 Structural Fasteners Technical Guide as a partially threaded countersunk structural timber screw for interior, dry use, with ETA-21/0670. The guide says predrilling is not typically required for this screw. | Follow the guide and approval for this model; its predrilling guidance is not a rule for other screws, woods or conditions. |
These examples illustrate why product details matter; they do not establish a universal specification. Hilti’s structural timber screw resources, for example, discuss applications including rafter-purlin joints, substructures and on-rafter insulation, and point to Eurocode 5 and ETA-certified conditions for design. Use the documentation that applies to the selected model and project rather than transferring an approval from one screw to another.
#1 Best Overall
- 137PCS 3-INCH DECK SCREWS: The 2-pound package includes approximately 137 pieces of #10 x 3-inch deck screws and one matching T25 star drive bit. A practical exterior wood screw set for decks, fences, framing and general outdoor construction projects.
- RUST-RESISTANT EPOXY COATING: The bronze epoxy-coated surface helps protect the screws against moisture, weather exposure and corrosion during exterior use. These coated deck screws are suitable for outdoor wood projects where ordinary uncoated screws may rust more quickly.
- T25 STAR DRIVE FOR SECURE INSTALLATION: The star drive recess provides multiple points of contact with the included T25 driver bit, helping reduce slipping and cam-out during installation. The drive design supports efficient fastening with a drill or impact driver.
- #10 x 3" FOR DEEP WOOD FASTENING: The 3-inch length provides deeper penetration when joining wood boards, lumber and outdoor project components. These long wood screws are suitable for deck boards, fence rails, posts, gates, pergolas, sheds, planters and outdoor furniture.
- VERSATILE EXTERIOR WOOD SCREWS: Use these outdoor screws for decking, fencing, framing, landscaping projects, garden beds, wooden walkways, docks, porches, patios, workshops and general wood construction. The bronze finish blends naturally with many wood colors for a clean appearance.
Installation: follow the model and the project plan
For the intended draw-up action, the unthreaded shank should clear the first member while the threads engage the receiving one. SPAX offers a bounded rule of thumb for its screws up to 100 mm in a particular two-timber example: screw length equal to 2.5 times decking-board thickness. That example is specific to SPAX and its stated conditions, not a general sizing formula.
Predrilling requirements also vary. Simpson Strong-Tie says it is not typically required for its SWC screw, but that statement applies to that product and its documented use, not to every wood species, diameter, edge distance or fastener. Check the selected screw’s instructions and any engineered requirements.

- Easy Installation: The star-drive design maximizes torque and reduces cam-out, protecting the fastener and bit. The sharp, pointed tip and self-drilling feature make it easy to install these Heavy-Duty wood screws into decking and other wooden surfaces quickly and efficiently.
- Versatile: These screws are designed for use in multiple materials, including thin sheet metal, PVCu, MDF, chipboard, softwood, and hardwood. They are suitable for a variety of woodworking projects, such as decking, framing, fencing, and other outdoor applications.
Schmid’s installation guide directs installers to follow the construction plan for screw size and type, spacing and timber thickness, and warns against striking the screw or fitting with a hammer. For structural work, use applicable design documentation and local code and approval requirements; a general selection guide cannot replace project-specific structural design.

A general wood-screw standard does not by itself establish suitability for a structural application. DIN Media’s catalogue entry for DIN 7997:2016-12 describes cross-recessed countersunk wood screws from 2 mm to 8 mm for applications that do not require construction approval. For a connection that does require structural approval, check the selected fastener’s own documentation and the requirements governing the project.
