Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To install Proxmox VE, first check that the server, disks, and network fit the storage design you want; then use the installer to choose the root storage layout and configure the host’s network. The most consequential early choice is whether to create a ZFS root pool, because its disk layout is selected during installation. For guest connectivity, Proxmox uses a Linux bridge that links virtual network interfaces to the physical network.
What to check before installing Proxmox VE
Inventory the physical host before booting the installer: CPU, supported memory type and capacity, disks, storage controller, network interfaces, and the workloads you expect to run. Check those components against the server or motherboard documentation; compatibility depends on the particular combination, not merely on the Proxmox VE name.
Decide whether you need a straightforward local installation or a ZFS root pool. If you choose ZFS, Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH’s 2025 Administration Guide says 8 GB of memory is the minimum to start with ZFS and recommends high-quality ECC RAM. The 8 GB figure applies to starting ZFS, not to every Proxmox VE installation or to every workload.
ZFS should have direct access to the disks rather than sit behind a hardware RAID controller that manages its own cache. Proxmox’s guide points to an HBA or an LSI controller in IT mode as ways to provide direct disk access. Confirm the exact controller, drives, and system support before selecting hardware.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A separate cache or log device is an optional ZFS design choice, not a requirement for every host. If your design includes one, Proxmox recommends enterprise-class SSDs for that role.
How to choose a disk layout for a ZFS root pool
The Proxmox installer can create ZFS as the root filesystem, and the pool layout is chosen during installation. The available layouts trade usable capacity against redundancy. Their actual usable space depends on drive sizes and the layout; verify the selected drives and the failure tolerance you need before committing.

| Layout | Minimum disks in Proxmox’s guide | Capacity and redundancy |
|---|---|---|
| RAID0 | Not stated in the cited guide passage | Stripes capacity across disks and provides no redundancy. A disk failure can make the pool unavailable. |
| RAID1 | 2 | Mirrors data. Usable capacity is limited by the smallest mirror member; the mirror can tolerate a disk failure while another copy remains available. |
| RAID10 | 4 | Combines striping and mirroring. Capacity is used for both data and mirrored copies; fault tolerance depends on which disks fail. |
| RAIDZ-1 | 3 | Uses single parity, reducing usable capacity relative to raw disk capacity and tolerating one disk failure. |
| RAIDZ-2 | 4 | Uses double parity, reducing usable capacity further and tolerating two disk failures. |
| RAIDZ-3 | 5 | Uses triple parity, reducing usable capacity further and tolerating three disk failures. |
Disk minimums and layout descriptions above are from Proxmox’s Administration Guide. Do not treat redundancy as a backup: it addresses some disk failures, not accidental deletion or other causes of data loss.
The guide documents installer behavior in which Proxmox creates an rpool pool, places the root filesystem at rpool/ROOT/pve-1, and uses rpool/data for VM images, with a local-zfs storage entry configured automatically. Verify these names and defaults against the exact release you install rather than assuming every release behaves identically.

How to install Proxmox VE
- Prepare the host: confirm the target disks, controller mode, network connection, and intended storage layout. If using ZFS, ensure direct disk access and sufficient memory for that choice.
- Boot the Proxmox VE installer: select the intended installation target and follow the installer’s prompts for regional, account, and management-network settings.
- Select storage deliberately: if creating a ZFS root filesystem, select the pool layout during installation and confirm the disks and redundancy before proceeding. This decision is not a routine post-install toggle.
- Finish installation and restart: use the management address configured by the installer to reach the host interface from a system on the network.
The available official material does not establish the current stable release or download location, so confirm the version and installer image on Proxmox’s official site before installation.
How to connect virtual machines to the physical network
A Linux bridge acts as a virtual switch: guest network interfaces attach to the bridge, and the bridge connects them to the physical network interface. A common bridge name is vmbr0, but the correct interface and address settings depend on the host network.

Proxmox supports configuring networking in its GUI or by editing /etc/network/interfaces. Its network configuration guidance prefers GUI changes because they help avoid errors. A manual edit may offer precision, but a mistake can disrupt host access. Keep a local console or another recovery route available when changing network settings, especially on a remote machine.
Bonds, VLANs, routed networks, NAT, and software-defined networking are additional options for particular network designs; they are not prerequisites for a basic bridge. Choose them only when the physical network and guest requirements call for them.

What to verify after installation
- Confirm that you can reach the Proxmox management interface using the host address you configured.
- Check that the host name and address resolve as intended on the network.
- Confirm that the expected storage is visible and that the installer created the intended pool or storage entries.
- Before relying on a guest for important work, verify that its virtual network interface is attached to the right bridge and can reach the required network.
Where Proxmox stores host configuration
Proxmox’s configuration filesystem, pmxcfs, is mounted at /etc/pve. The pmxcfs documentation describes a database-backed filesystem whose configuration is replicated in real time among cluster nodes through corosync; it becomes read-only when cluster quorum is lost. That replication and quorum behavior applies to a cluster. A standalone host does not gain multi-node replication simply by using /etc/pve.
Choosing between ZFS and other local storage
ZFS is an installer-supported root filesystem with selectable pool layouts, but the cited Proxmox material does not establish a universal winner between ZFS and every other local storage option. Base the choice on the host’s disks and controller, required redundancy, workload needs, and the storage features and operating practices you need. Avoid selecting a layout solely because it offers the greatest raw capacity or the most parity; both have operational and capacity trade-offs.
