For predictable savings, a National Savings Account is the more natural fit; an ordinary prize bond offers a chance to win, not a guaranteed return. The right choice depends on whether you value a stated profit mechanism and account access or are comfortable with uncertain prize outcomes. This comparison covers Pakistan’s National Savings products; “prize bond” rules differ by country.
How returns differ
An ordinary prize bond is a chance-based instrument. Holding one does not guarantee a prize, and National Savings Pakistan says there is no way to ensure that a bond will win. Its face value can be redeemed through specified National Savings and financial institution counters, but any prize is uncertain. Buying more bonds gives you more entries, not a certain win. National Savings Pakistan’s FAQ describes the draw rules.
A National Savings Account credits profit annually according to its balance calculation. The FAQ says profit is credited on June 30 and calculated using the lowest balance from the close of the sixth day of the relevant period through month-end. However, it does not state the current account rate. Without that rate—and comparable current terms and tax treatment—you cannot responsibly conclude that the account earns more than a bond in numerical terms.

| Factor | Ordinary prize bond | National Savings Account |
|---|---|---|

| Draw or credit timing | Must be issued at least 60 days before a draw to qualify. A prize claim must be made within six years of the draw. | Profit is credited on June 30. The FAQ states a weekly withdrawal limit, not a withdrawal penalty. |
| Ownership and custody | Bearer instrument: the holder is treated as the owner, so secure physical custody matters. | Account-based product. |
| Eligibility | Check current issue and purchase rules for the denomination you want. | FAQ says Pakistani nationals and overseas Pakistanis may open an account. |
These rules are reported in the National Savings Pakistan FAQ. Confirm current terms before buying or opening an account.

When an ordinary prize bond may suit you
- You understand that a prize is uncertain and do not need a predictable return from the money.
- You are comfortable keeping a bearer instrument secure: National Savings says ownership belongs to whoever holds it.
- You can account for draw eligibility timing; a bond must have been issued at least 60 days before the draw to qualify.
The FAQ lists ordinary denominations of Rs. 100, Rs. 200, Rs. 750, and Rs. 1,500. It also says a bond remains valid until the scheme is terminated. Verify denominations, draw dates, and sale conditions using current official information; the National Savings Prize Bonds page is an official reference, though its full contents were not available for this comparison.
When a National Savings Account may suit you
- You prefer an account with a defined profit-crediting method rather than a draw-dependent possibility.
- You want the account’s stated withdrawal access of up to three withdrawals per week.
- You meet the minimum balance requirement of Rs. 100 and qualify as a Pakistani national or overseas Pakistani under the FAQ’s description.
Before choosing it for the return, check the current official rate: the FAQ does not provide one. Also consider that the stated annual credit date and balance calculation affect when and how profit is credited.
Premium Prize Bonds are a separate option
Do not treat Premium Prize Bonds as interchangeable with ordinary bonds. The National Savings FAQ describes registered Premium Prize Bonds in Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 40,000 denominations as combining profit with prize draws. It says they have four quarterly draws each year, with prize and profit paid directly to a linked account, and that they are transferable and can be pledged. The FAQ displays a 2.92% bi-annual profit rate, but that figure is not confirmed as current; check the latest official rate and conditions before relying on it. National Savings Pakistan FAQ
Taxes and deductions to check
The FAQ lists withholding on prize winnings at 15% for filers and 30% for non-filers. For Savings Account profit, it lists the same filer-status rates and says Zakat applies. The FAQ’s tax details include older effective-date wording, so treat them as source-reported information rather than current personalized tax guidance. Verify current withholding and Zakat treatment with authoritative current information for your circumstances. National Savings Pakistan FAQ

How to choose
- Decide what the money must do. If you need predictable account-based profit, examine the Savings Account’s current rate and balance rules. If you are willing to accept an uncertain outcome for a possible prize, an ordinary bond may fit that preference.
- Check access and handling. Compare the account’s withdrawal limit with the bond’s encashment channels, and consider the risk of holding a bearer instrument.
- Confirm current terms. Check rates, denominations, draw schedules, eligibility, tax withholding, and Zakat treatment from current official sources before committing funds.
- Compare like with like. Do not compare a guaranteed account rate with a hypothetical prize as if both were assured returns. For a numerical comparison, use current comparable rates and account for applicable deductions.
