To pair most Samsung Smart Remotes, turn on the TV, point the remote at it, then press and hold Return and Play/Pause together until a pairing confirmation appears. Samsung’s instructions differ by TV and remote generation, so use the model-specific manual if those buttons do not work. Classic infrared remotes generally do not pair; they need a clear path to the TV’s sensor.
First, identify which Samsung remote you have
A Bluetooth Smart Remote needs to be paired with the TV. A classic infrared (IR) remote generally works without pairing: point it toward the TV’s sensor and keep the path clear. Samsung notes that a number pad can be a clue that a remote is a classic model, but the TV and remote model numbers are the better way to confirm compatibility.
If you are unsure, look up the TV’s model-specific manual or Samsung support instructions. Pairing button combinations vary across generations: for example, Samsung’s instructions for a 2014 Smart Control use Return and Guide, not Return and Play/Pause.

How to pair a Samsung Smart Remote
- Turn on the TV. If the remote cannot switch it on, use the TV’s physical control button if available.
- Stand near the TV and aim the remote at its sensor. Sensor placement varies; Samsung Gulf says it is typically on the lower right side or at the bottom center.
- Press and hold Return and Play/Pause together. Hold until the TV displays a pairing or connection confirmation. Samsung Gulf says to hold for at least three seconds; Samsung US says at least five seconds or until the connection message appears.
- Wait for confirmation, then test a basic function, such as Home or volume.
Because Samsung’s timing instructions differ by support page and model, treat the on-screen confirmation as the cue to stop holding the buttons. What to do if no pairing message appears
Check distance, direction, and power
- Move closer to the TV and keep the remote aimed at its sensor while holding the pairing buttons.
- For a battery-powered remote, check battery orientation and replace depleted batteries. For a rechargeable remote, charge it using the method its model supports. Not every Samsung remote has the same power source.
- If you cannot turn the TV on with the remote, use its physical control button if available, then retry pairing.
Power-cycle the TV
If the remote has power and the correct pairing sequence still fails, Samsung US suggests unplugging the TV for 30 seconds, plugging it back in, and trying again. Follow the support instructions for your region and TV model.
Use an infrared camera check only for an IR remote
Samsung describes checking an infrared remote by viewing its emitter through a phone or digital camera while pressing a button. If the camera shows a flash, that indicates the remote is emitting an IR signal; it does not establish that a Bluetooth Smart Remote has paired. Some phone cameras filter infrared, so a lack of visible flash is not conclusive by itself.

Use the correct pairing combination for older remotes
Do not assume every Samsung Smart Remote uses Return and Play/Pause. Samsung’s UK manual for a 2014 Smart Control instructs users to hold Return and Guide near the TV. Check the manual for your television and remote generation if the current combination does not produce a confirmation.

Connecting a Smart Remote to the TV is separate from configuring the TV remote to control a set-top box, soundbar, or other external device. Samsung Canada says the Universal Remote feature applies to supported devices connected by HDMI; an IR-controlled device also needs line of sight to the TV’s IR sensor. When to replace the remote
If the remote remains unresponsive after checking its power, following the correct model-specific pairing steps, and restarting the TV, it may be defective. Before buying a replacement, find the TV’s model number and confirm that the replacement remote is compatible with that exact TV. A remote that looks similar may not support the same pairing method or functions.
