Use Cypress UI interactions when a test needs to prove that a person can complete a visible flow. Use an application action or small helper to establish preconditions—such as logging in or creating test data—when that setup is not what the test is meant to verify. Cypress currently discourages shared page objects, but that is a context-specific recommendation, not a rule that every UI helper is harmful.
What is the difference?

“App action” is not a Cypress-specific API name. In Gleb Bahmutov’s 2019 article, it means invoking application behavior directly rather than repeating the corresponding UI operations. Cypress’s current guidance separately recommends programmatic setup in appropriate cases and simple, composable custom commands.
Why Cypress discourages shared page objects
Cypress’s current best-practices documentation labels sharing page objects, using the UI to log in, and not taking shortcuts an anti-pattern. Its rationale is to favor isolated tests, programmatic login where appropriate, and specs organized around features and user flows rather than mirroring the application’s page hierarchy.
This is Cypress’s opinionated guidance, not evidence that every page-shaped helper is harmful or that all test teams agree. A small component helper may still be useful if it makes an interaction easier to understand without concealing the test’s intent.

Choose based on what the test claims
- Claim: “A user can complete this through the interface.” Drive the UI and assert the visible result. Keep the relevant flow in the test so the test actually exercises the behavior it names.
- Claim: “This feature works after login or with existing data.” Consider programmatic setup,
cy.request(), or an application action to establish that precondition, then test the feature’s user-visible behavior. - The same setup is reused across the suite. A small custom command can be appropriate. If reuse is local to one spec, a regular function or inline steps may be clearer.
- The operation itself is the behavior under test. Do not bypass it with an app action; exercise it through the UI and assert its user-visible outcome.
Keep the assertion near the test that states the expected behavior. Avoid hiding many actions and assertions inside generalized helpers.
Use Cypress helpers without hiding the test
Cypress supports custom commands for behavior that is desirable across tests, such as app setup or login. Its custom-command guidance says to make commands composable and unopinionated, and cautions against making everything a custom command. It also recommends leaving the calling code to choose when and how to assert. For reuse needed across specs, Cypress describes placing shared commands and setup in the support file in its guide to writing and organizing tests.

For UI tests, prefer stable data-* selectors over selectors tied to styling or incidental structure. A resilient selector helps the UI test survive presentation changes; it does not make a test that bypasses the UI equivalent to a user-flow test.
Synchronize direct application actions
Direct actions can return before the application has finished processing. Bahmutov’s 2019 article recommends waiting on observable evidence such as a DOM update, network traffic, or a method call rather than assuming that invoking the action means the resulting state is ready. Some operations may not be available through an application method at all; in those cases, an API setup path such as cy.request() may be more suitable.

His article reported a local TodoMVC example taking 17 seconds with application actions versus 34 seconds through the UI, using Cypress’s Electron browser. That is one simple example from 2019, not a general speed guarantee or a cross-project benchmark. Choose the approach for test intent and clarity, not on an assumption that every app-action suite will be faster.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are page objects always an anti-pattern in Cypress?
No. Cypress discourages shared page objects, but a focused UI helper can still be useful when it improves clarity and does not obscure test intent.
Does using an app action mean the UI no longer needs testing?
No. Use app actions for setup when suitable; retain UI-level coverage for behavior the test claims a user can perform.
