In May 2023, an attacker took over four inactive Packagist accounts and changed metadata and source URLs for 14 PHP packages. Packagist says its investigation found that no malicious changes were distributed. The “500 million installs” figure came from The Hacker News’ secondary coverage; it is not a Packagist count of distinct applications or systems infected.
What happened in the Packagist hack?
Packagist’s May 3, 2023 incident report says an attacker accessed four Packagist.org user accounts that had been inactive. The accounts collectively had access to 14 packages. Packagist said the accounts appeared to have reused passwords exposed in earlier incidents on other platforms; its report did not say Packagist itself or Composer had been breached.
Between May 1, 2023, 15:08 and 16:05 UTC, the attacker forked each package, replaced its description in composer.json with a message, and changed the package URLs on Packagist to point to the forks. Packagist said the attacker made no other malicious changes.
At 07:21 UTC on May 2, Packagist was alerted by Juha Suni about changed URLs for several Doctrine packages. Nils Adermann and Marco Pivetta disabled the accessed accounts and restored package URLs. Packagist said the accounts were disabled and the packages restored by 08:20 UTC that morning. Its analysis of the forked repositories found no malicious changes had been distributed. Packagist’s incident report gives the timeline and response.

Were the packages actually infected, and what does “500 million installs” mean?
Packagist’s stated finding was that no malicious changes were distributed. The incident involved account access and altered package metadata and URLs; the available report does not establish that malicious code reached users’ projects.
The Hacker News used “500 Million Installs” in its May 3, 2023 headline. Packagist’s report confirms 14 affected packages but does not give that aggregate install figure. Treat it as secondary coverage’s characterization of installs associated with the packages—not as 500 million distinct applications, people, or infected systems. The sources do not provide download audit data or establish individual-project exposure. The Hacker News report is the source for the headline figure.

Which Composer packages were affected?
Packagist identified these 14 package names:

Was your application affected?
The package list alone cannot show whether a particular project used an affected package during the incident or resolved a changed URL. Packagist’s public account says its investigation found no malicious changes were distributed, but it does not provide project-by-project exposure records.
To assess your own project, check its dependency history and lock-file changes from the incident period, paying particular attention to these package names and unexpected external URLs. A package appearing in your current dependency tree does not, by itself, establish that your application received malicious code.

How to secure Composer dependencies
Protect maintainer accounts
- Use a unique, strong password for every website account. Packagist specifically urged users not to reuse passwords.
- Enable two-factor authentication on both Packagist and GitHub. Packagist’s 2023 advice mentioned an authenticator app; it did not recommend a particular product.
Review dependency changes
- Review lock-file changes before merging, especially unexpected dependency URLs or untrusted sources.
- Investigate a changed package reference rather than assuming the lock file is safe because the package name is familiar. Packagist is a metadata server; package contents are downloaded from the location selected by maintainers.
Understand the later controls—and their dated status
In a May 27, 2026 update, Packagist described additional supply-chain controls and distinguished shipped measures from proposals. These details are a dated status report, not a guarantee that every feature remains unchanged; consult current release documentation before relying on availability or behavior.
| Control | Status in Packagist’s May 27, 2026 update | What it addresses |
|---|---|---|
| Aikido malware-detection results | Packagist said it began importing results in March 2026. | Warnings for flagged package versions appear in the Packagist interface and metadata served to Composer. |
| Public transparency log | Described as available. | Records security-relevant events, including ownership changes, maintainer additions and removals, and version-reference changes. |
| Composer dependency-policy framework | Packagist said Composer 2.10 was shipping with it. | Policies cover vulnerability advisories, abandoned packages, and malware-flagged versions. |
| Stable-version immutability | Described as imminent for that week. | Packagist said it would reject upstream tag changes after a stable version was published, instead of silently rewriting that version reference. |
| Minimum release age; more administrator override, delisting, and package-freezing tools; public maintainer MFA status; mandatory MFA; FIDO2-backed staged releases; immutable repository-hosted artifacts with SLSA provenance and Sigstore attestations | Described as upcoming or longer-term, not as already implemented. | Proposed or planned measures for delaying, governing, authenticating, or verifying package releases. |
Packagist also described Private Packagist as storing copies of mirrored package contents and its Update Review feature as helping teams spot metadata changes, such as a suspicious URL, during lock-file review. Those are organization-oriented options, not required fixes for an individual developer.
