Ozmo announced samples in 2010, positioning the part as a way to bring Wi-Fi bandwidth to small devices without treating it as a new consumer networking standard.
What was the OZMO2000?
The OZMO2000 was Ozmo Devices’ second-generation Wi-Fi personal-area-network (Wi-Fi PAN) system-on-chip for embedding in peripherals. The company described it as a “single-chip ultra-low power Wi-Fi Direct solution.” It combined radio, baseband and microcontroller functions rather than serving as a standalone home-networking product. EE Times’ 2010 launch report covered the sampling announcement, while the OZMO2000 datasheet described its integrated design.
What devices was it designed to connect?
Ozmo targeted wireless peripherals that could benefit from a direct link to a compatible computer or host. Launch materials named mice, keyboards, remote controls, touch-screen devices, wireless audio and video applications.
The chip’s interfaces were intended to support product integration: the datasheet lists connections for external controllers, sensors, buttons, LEDs and flash memory, along with UART, SPI, I2C, GPIO and digital audio. That made the OZMO2000 a component for device makers, not a plug-in adapter for consumers.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How did its Wi-Fi approach work?
The chip supported 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands and 802.11a/b/g/n interoperability with host platforms. Ozmo’s goal was to combine low power use for peripheral applications with more available bandwidth than a simple low-data-rate control link might offer. Its 2010 launch coverage reported a peak data rate of up to 24 Mbit/s; that is a company-era product claim, not an independent performance test or a guarantee of real-world speed.
Connecting a peripheral still depended on host-side support. Ozmo cited Windows 7 SoftAP, Intel My Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct host environments. A computer running Windows 7 was not automatically guaranteed to work: the host’s Wi-Fi hardware, software stack and peripheral integration had to be compatible.

Was Ozmo meant to replace Bluetooth?
Not as a universal replacement. Ozmo’s proposition was that low-power Wi-Fi could give certain peripherals a direct connection with more bandwidth, but the practical choice between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth depends on the device and host. Relevant considerations include battery life and duty cycle, throughput and latency, driver and host compatibility, integration cost, radio range and band support, and long-term component availability.
An earlier 2008 report cited Ozmo claims of up to nine months of mouse battery life versus four months for Bluetooth, and 20 hours of headset talk time versus about six hours for Bluetooth. Those were company claims about an earlier generation, not independently verified tests of the OZMO2000, so they should not be read as a measured comparison for this chip. The available 2010 launch coverage does not establish an independent benchmark.

When were samples offered, and is the chip still available?
Ozmo said samples were available to qualified customers in 2010, with volume production planned for the fourth quarter of that year. The launch materials quoted US$3.00 per chip at a 10,000-unit quantity. These were historical OEM launch terms, not a current retail price or a promise of supply.
The datasheet listed two orderable variants, OZMO2000A-Q56-1 and OZMO2000A-Q56-2, both in 56-pin QFN packages. That establishes the part numbers and package, but not whether either variant can still be purchased. Current inventory or authorized-distributor availability is not established here.

What happened to Ozmo Devices?
Atmel completed its acquisition of Ozmo on December 20, 2012, for approximately US$64.4 million, according to Atmel’s 2013 SEC filing. Atmel said the acquisition added ultra-low-power Wi-Fi Direct technology and related intellectual property to its microcontroller portfolio. The acquisition explains the company’s later ownership context, but does not by itself confirm present-day OZMO2000 supply.
