It sits between your crawler and Oxylabs, caches repeat responses, blocks ads and other unwanted assets, compresses traffic, and can stub nonessential content. Scrapfly advertises savings of up to 30%, but that is a vendor claim rather than an independently verified result; your saving depends on cacheability, repeat-request volume, page composition, and how much content your application can safely omit.
Oxylabs remains the proxy provider and still charges under its own plan. The practical question is therefore not simply whether Proxy Saver works, but whether the cost of Scrapfly plus the reduced Oxylabs usage is lower than your current setup or a different Oxylabs plan.
What Proxy Saver is in an Oxylabs setup
Proxy Saver is Scrapfly middleware placed in front of an upstream proxy such as Oxylabs. Your client sends a request to the middleware; Proxy Saver applies its optimization rules, then forwards only the required traffic through Oxylabs. It supports HTTP, HTTPS, and SOCKS5 connections, forwards Oxylabs settings such as country and session parameters, and exposes usage and billing metrics in a dashboard.
Scrapfly describes the layer as a man-in-the-middle optimization service. Its documented functions include automatic caching, ad and unwanted-content blocking, compression, data stubbing, fingerprint impersonation, retries, and connection fixes. A separate Scrapfly explanation says it can cache responses, redirects, and CORS requests. These features affect different parts of your bill, so measure them separately instead of treating “Proxy Saver” as a single discount.

Where the savings come from
Caching repeat responses
A cache hit can serve a previously fetched response without sending the same object through Oxylabs again. This is most useful when many jobs request identical pages, API responses, redirects, scripts, images, or other stable assets. The benefit falls when every URL is unique, responses are explicitly non-cacheable, or your freshness requirement forces a very short time-to-live.
Cache correctness matters more than a high hit-rate number. Decide which fields may be reused, how long they remain valid, and whether personalized or authenticated responses are excluded. Compare the cache-hit rate with stale-data incidents; a cheap but incorrect response is not a saving.
Blocking ads and unwanted assets
Advertising scripts, trackers, recommendation widgets, video players, and third-party fonts can represent a large share of page bytes while contributing nothing to an extraction task. Blocking them before they traverse the residential or mobile proxy reduces upstream traffic. Keep a per-site allowlist for assets that affect the data you actually collect, because an aggressive block can remove consent controls, pagination code, or product data rendered by a third-party request.
Compression
Compression reduces the number of bytes transferred for compressible text such as HTML, JSON, CSS, and JavaScript. It has less effect on already compressed JPEG, WebP, video, and archive files. Compression savings are also workload-dependent: a page dominated by images will not approach the result of a text-heavy API.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Data stubbing
Stubbing replaces nonessential content with a smaller representation or prevents it from being fetched. This can be effective for large page sections that your parser never reads. Document exactly what is stubbed and test extraction results before deployment. If your downstream process later needs the omitted field, restoring it may erase the apparent saving.
Retries and connection fixes
Retries and connection fixes primarily improve completion rates. They can lower the cost per successful item when they prevent repeated application-level attempts, but they may also add requests if retry policy is too aggressive. Track failed attempts, retry counts, and successful records together; do not label every reliability improvement as bandwidth reduction.
What “up to 30%” means
Scrapfly’s September 26, 2025 technical article claims that Proxy Saver can save up to 30% of bandwidth. That figure is a maximum vendor statement, not a guaranteed rate or an independent benchmark. It should be treated as a hypothesis to test on your own traffic.

- Used Book in Good Condition
For an illustrative calculation, if a workload sends 100 GB through an $8-per-GB residential plan, the unoptimized transfer cost would be $800. A 30% reduction would leave 70 GB and $560 of proxy usage, before any Scrapfly charge. The example is arithmetic, not a forecast. A workload with no repeat requests and mostly uncompressible images may save very little; a repeated, ad-heavy catalog may save considerably more.
Use this formula for your own decision:
net monthly saving = (baseline Oxylabs GB − optimized Oxylabs GB) × Oxylabs price per GB − Proxy Saver cost
Include the value of engineering time, cache storage, monitoring, and any extra requests caused by retries. A positive byte reduction is not automatically a positive business case.
Oxylabs prices to use in the comparison
Oxylabs’ current self-service residential billing page, crawled in 2026, lists $8 per GB, a 1 GB minimum top-up, and a 50 GB maximum monthly top-up. Prices and limits can change, so verify the live plan before committing budget.
| Option | Published price or limit | What it means for the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Oxylabs residential, self-service | $8/GB; 1 GB minimum top-up; 50 GB maximum monthly top-up (page crawled 2026) | High per-GB cost makes byte reduction potentially valuable, subject to your workload and Proxy Saver fee. |
| Oxylabs shared datacenter | $0.65/GB at $50 + VAT monthly; $0.60/GB at $100; $0.55/GB at $200; $0.50/GB at $300 (displayed plans, page crawled 2026) | Switching proxy products may reduce the unit price more than middleware, if datacenter IPs meet your targeting and success requirements. |
| Oxylabs residential pool | 175M+ residential IPs across 195+ countries (current product-page assertion) | Pool size and geographic coverage can justify residential use, but they do not demonstrate lower bandwidth usage. |
Oxylabs itself says HTTP proxies can save bandwidth by compressing traffic, caching files, and reducing ads on ad-heavy sites. Treat that as a provider description of capability, not a measured saving for your account.

Proxy Saver versus changing Oxylabs plans
Middleware and plan selection solve different problems. Proxy Saver is most compelling when you need residential or mobile identity, country targeting, or session behavior but repeatedly download the same heavy pages. A shared datacenter plan can be cheaper per gigabyte, but it may not provide the same IP type, geography, or target-site acceptance.
| Decision axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Bytes billed per successful item | How many payload bytes reach Oxylabs for one accepted record before and after optimization? |
| Cacheability and freshness | What percentage of requests repeat, and how stale may a response be? |
| Data completeness | Which assets can be blocked, compressed, or stubbed without changing the extracted result? |
| Success and retry rate | Does the middleware preserve target-site success, or do retries offset the byte savings? |
| Session and geography | Do you require residential identity, a country, or a stable Oxylabs session? |
| Total cost | Compare Oxylabs usage plus Proxy Saver with the cost of a different Oxylabs product at the same success level. |
Do not compare only headline dollars per gigabyte. A cheaper datacenter request that fails more often can cost more per usable record, while a residential request with a stable session may be operationally necessary.

How to deploy and evaluate Proxy Saver
- Define the unit of value. Choose a successful page, product, listing, or API record and record the required fields. Mark optional assets that may be blocked or stubbed.
- Capture a baseline. Run a representative sample directly through Oxylabs. Record request count, response payload bytes, status codes, elapsed time, retries, and the Oxylabs usage shown in your account.
- Create the middleware route. In Scrapfly, create a Proxy Saver configuration and copy the connection details from its dashboard. Do not invent a hostname or port; use the values shown for your account. Select HTTP, HTTPS, or SOCKS5 as required by your client.
- Forward Oxylabs controls. Preserve the country and other targeting parameters your job needs. For a persistent Oxylabs IP, use the documented
sessid-authentication parameter and keep the same session identifier for the requests that must share an IP. - Enable one optimization at a time. Start with caching, then test ad blocking, compression, and stubbing separately. This isolates which rule changes bytes and which rule changes extraction quality.
- Set freshness and exclusions. Give cacheable resources an explicit TTL, exclude personalized or sensitive responses, and maintain an allowlist for required scripts and API calls.
- Run a controlled comparison. Replay the same URLs, countries, session behavior, and concurrency against the direct and middleware routes. Compare successful records, payload bytes, cache hits, retries, and elapsed time.
- Check the dashboard and invoice. Your local byte count is an engineering proxy, not the provider’s bill. Reconcile it with Scrapfly metrics and Oxylabs usage before calculating a return on investment.
- Roll out gradually. Use a canary percentage, alert on missing fields and status-code changes, and keep a quick way to bypass the middleware if a target site changes.
A small before-and-after measurement harness
The following Python program measures payload size and completion for a URL list. Run it once with a direct Oxylabs proxy and once with the Proxy Saver connection string. It does not estimate the provider’s bill; use the resulting measurements alongside both dashboards. Install the dependency with pip install requests. For SOCKS5, install requests[socks] and use a socks5h:// URL supplied by your provider.
import csv
import time
import requests
URLS = [
"https://example.com/",
"https://example.com/catalog"
]
# Replace with the route you are testing. Keep credentials out of source control.
PROXY_URL = "http://USER:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT"
PROXIES = {"http": PROXY_URL, "https": PROXY_URL}
rows = []
for url in URLS:
started = time.perf_counter()
try:
response = requests.get(
url,
proxies=PROXIES,
timeout=60,
headers={"User-Agent": "cost-measurement/1.0"},
)
elapsed = time.perf_counter() - started
rows.append({
"url": url,
"status": response.status_code,
"payload_bytes": len(response.content),
"seconds": round(elapsed, 3),
"error": "",
})
except requests.RequestException as exc:
rows.append({
"url": url,
"status": "",
"payload_bytes": 0,
"seconds": round(time.perf_counter() - started, 3),
"error": str(exc),
})
with open("proxy-run.csv", "w", newline="") as output:
writer = csv.DictWriter(output, fieldnames=rows[0].keys())
writer.writeheader()
writer.writerows(rows)
print("Wrote proxy-run.csv")
Use identical URL order and workload for both runs. If the middleware blocks or stubs content, add application-level checks for required fields; a smaller response that fails validation is not a successful optimization.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeeping sessions stable while saving traffic
Oxylabs documents session control through a sessid- authentication parameter. Session persistence helps a workflow keep the same proxy IP across related requests, which can improve continuity. It is not itself evidence of lower byte usage. Measure session stability and bandwidth as separate metrics.
When caching and sessions are combined, avoid sharing a personalized response between users or sessions. Key cached data by the variables that change the result, including country, session, authorization state, and relevant cookies. If a page is user-specific, bypass caching even when the URL is identical.
Performance, reliability, and operational trade-offs
Latency
A cache hit can be faster because it avoids an upstream round trip. A cache miss adds a middleware hop, and content inspection or retries can add processing time. Track p50 and p95 latency rather than relying on one request.
Freshness and invalidation
Short TTLs preserve freshness but reduce hit rates. Long TTLs improve byte savings but increase stale-data risk. Align TTLs with the source’s update frequency and your business tolerance, and provide an explicit purge path for urgent changes.
Target-site behavior
Fingerprint impersonation and connection fixes may improve compatibility, but changing headers, cookies, or user agents can also alter what a site returns. Keep a record of the effective request characteristics when diagnosing differences between direct and middleware runs.

Privacy and credentials
Because Proxy Saver is an intermediary, review how credentials, cookies, and response data are handled for your use case. Exclude secrets from logs and restrict dashboard access. Do not cache authenticated responses unless you have verified isolation.
Common problems and fixes
Costs did not fall
Likely causes: unique URLs, low repeat traffic, image-heavy pages, cache-control headers, or an optimization fee larger than the Oxylabs saving. Fix: inspect cache hits, payload composition, and total middleware cost; test a repeated workload before changing plans.
Required fields disappeared
Likely cause: an ad-block or stubbing rule removed a script or request that actually contained data. Fix: disable the rule, identify the required asset, and add it to an allowlist before re-enabling other filters.
Responses are stale
Likely cause: a TTL is longer than the source’s update interval. Fix: shorten the TTL for that resource, bypass caching for volatile endpoints, or purge the affected key.
Sessions change unexpectedly
Likely causes: a new session identifier per request, incorrect forwarding of Oxylabs parameters, or retries that start a new route. Fix: keep the same documented sessid- value for the intended sequence and verify the middleware configuration and logs.
Failure rate increased
Likely causes: an incompatible user agent, blocked resource, timeout, or over-aggressive retry policy. Fix: compare status codes and retry counts with the direct baseline, relax one rule at a time, and keep a bypass route for urgent jobs.

FAQ
Can I use Proxy Saver only for selected domains?
Yes. Route a controlled subset of domains or URL patterns through the middleware first, then compare quality and cost before expanding coverage. Keep direct routing available for pages whose content or authentication cannot be cached or filtered safely.
Should I optimize bytes or successful records first?
Use successful records as the primary unit and bytes as the cost driver. A configuration that saves bytes but lowers valid-record yield can increase the effective cost of usable data.
