For a bhajan channel whose audience should watch on YouTube, start with OBS Studio sending directly to YouTube. OBS encodes and broadcasts your video; Owncast is a separate, self-hosted streaming site that OBS can send video to. Owncast is useful when you specifically want to operate your own site and audience infrastructure, but it adds a server to install, secure, maintain and provision.

Owncast does not automatically relay a stream to YouTube, and one OBS output should not be assumed to reach both destinations without additional configuration or tooling. Choose OBS directly to YouTube when YouTube is the destination
This is the simpler architecture: OBS encodes the playlist or other video source and sends it to YouTube using YouTube’s server URL and stream key. You still need to keep the encoder and its internet connection running, monitor the stream and handle interruptions.

Add Owncast only for a separate self-hosted audience site
Owncast makes sense if you want to operate your own streaming site and chat rather than relying only on YouTube’s watch page. It is an additional system, not a replacement encoder: OBS can send an RTMP broadcast to Owncast, which requires a persistent server and planning for viewer-facing bandwidth. Transcoding can affect CPU use; object storage is one way Owncast documents for offloading delivery bandwidth. Set up OBS directly to YouTube
- Enable live streaming on the channel. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live and follow the live-stream setup. The channel must be eligible and live streaming enabled; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Create the stream in Live Control Room. Choose the encoder workflow, then copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a screen recording. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Configure OBS for YouTube’s recommendations. Use H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and RTMPS where available. Choose a resolution and bitrate that your connection can sustain; YouTube’s guidance emphasizes upload headroom rather than running at the connection’s limit. Check YouTube’s current encoding recommendations for the target resolution and frame rate before locking settings. YouTube live encoder settings
- Build and verify the bhajan playback source. Arrange the videos in OBS or use a playlist source appropriate to your workflow. Confirm the order, transitions, audio levels and that playback returns to the beginning as intended. Test the actual source rather than assuming an unattended playlist will recover from every local file or application error.
- Run a private or unlisted test before a continuous broadcast. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, listen for clipping or missing audio, and verify that the picture stays stable. If OBS also records locally, play back the recording to confirm that the file is usable. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; a backup encoder should also be tested rather than merely prepared. - Start the broadcast and monitor it. Start streaming in OBS, confirm the incoming preview and health indicators in Live Control Room, then start the YouTube broadcast as prompted. For a 24/7 channel, establish who will respond to stream-health alerts and what they will do if the encoder, connection or playback source stops.
If you use Owncast instead
- Install Owncast on a server that will remain available, configure network access and secure its administration credentials. The manual setup documentation lists default credentials and advises changing them immediately.
- Use Owncast’s RTMP
/liveendpoint and stream key as the destination in OBS; do not use the YouTube key for Owncast. - Set OBS to H.264/AAC with a two-second keyframe interval, then test playback, audio and viewer access on the Owncast site.
- If YouTube is also an audience destination, plan and test a separate YouTube output workflow. Do not assume Owncast forwards the stream automatically.

Plan for uninterrupted playback—and for replays
One long stream is not a guaranteed complete archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. That makes a continuous 24/7 broadcast a poor substitute for a deliberate replay plan. Keep a local recording or other appropriate backup if preserving the full program matters, and decide how you will divide or retain recordings. YouTube live stream archiving

- Leave upload headroom; an encoder using nearly all available upload capacity is more vulnerable to fluctuations.
- Test the full chain—playlist, encoder, internet connection and YouTube preview—before leaving it unattended.
- Monitor stream health and local recording integrity during the test.
- If you rely on a backup encoder, test the handoff and confirm it uses a valid destination configuration.
Clear music and recording rights before going live
YouTube requires the creator to have the necessary rights for live-stream content, including music rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; a match can interrupt the stream. Even when you have licensed music, the rightsholder may need to allowlist your channel in Content ID for the live stream to proceed without interruption. A bhajan’s devotional character or age does not, by itself, establish that a particular recording or performance is cleared. A traditional composition, a modern arrangement, a specific recording and a performer’s contribution can raise different rights questions. Prefer original, commissioned or properly licensed recordings; use public-domain material only when that status is appropriately confirmed for the specific material. Keep permission records and ask the relevant rightsholder about Content ID allowlisting.
