You can run Owncast in Docker as the server that receives a live broadcast, but Owncast does not itself import or loop a YouTube playlist. For continuous playback, pair the Dockerized Owncast server with a separate playout process that sends it an RTMP stream. The official Owncast 24/7 example uses ffplayout and local video files—not a YouTube playlist pipeline.

How the continuous-stream setup works

Think of this as two separate jobs: a playout system supplies video continuously, and Owncast receives that broadcast and serves it to viewers. The Owncast project’s Docker example pairs Owncast with ffplayout, which plays files placed in a videos directory. The documented example does not establish that ffplayout or Owncast can take a YouTube playlist URL as its source.

If your source must be a YouTube playlist, choose a separate workflow capable of continuously producing an RTMP stream for Owncast. Confirm that it can access the source, maintain playback and recover from interruptions, and that you have the rights to rebroadcast the material. Do not treat YouTube’s HLS ingest instructions as Owncast configuration: Owncast’s documented receiving path here is RTMP.

Deploy Owncast with Docker Compose

The Owncast container instructions use the stable owncast/owncast:latest image, map the web interface on port 8080 and RTMP ingest on port 1935, persist ./data at /app/data, and set the container to restart unless stopped. A minimal Compose service following those documented settings is:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

      - "1935:1935"
    volumes:
      - "./data:/app/data"
    restart: unless-stopped
  1. Create the project directory and Compose file. Save the service definition as compose.yaml in a directory where you want the persistent data folder created.
  2. Start the service. From that directory, run docker compose up -d.
  3. Open the web interface. Visit http://yourserver:8080, replacing yourserver with the host name or address reachable from your network.
  4. Allow the required network traffic. Make the web port 8080 and RTMP port 1935 reachable where needed. If the server is behind a firewall or router, configure access deliberately rather than exposing administration credentials publicly.

The persistent volume keeps Owncast’s data outside the replaceable container. The Compose restart policy brings the container back after a stop or host restart unless you explicitly stop it; it does not guarantee that the external playout source will resume correctly.

Secure Owncast before publishing a stream

The documented default admin username and password are admin and abc123; the documented default stream key is also abc123. Change both credentials immediately. The administrator password and stream key are separate settings: changing one does not replace the other. Store the new values securely, and do not put them in a public post or share them with viewers.

Connect an RTMP publisher

Owncast accepts RTMP on TCP port 1935 by default. Configure the separate encoder or playout application with the server address rtmp://yourserver:1935/live and enter the stream key in its stream-key field. If the publisher accepts only one URL, use the form rtmp://yourserver:1935/live/<key>, substituting your actual key. Keep the key private: anyone who can publish with it may be able to send a stream to your Owncast server.

Use the RTMP server and key fields intended by your publisher. Do not paste YouTube HLS settings into the Owncast RTMP configuration; they are different ingest protocols.

Choose a continuous playout source

Use the documented local-file example

The Owncast-maintained 24/7 example runs ffplayout alongside Owncast in Docker Compose and plays local files added to a videos directory. This is the clearest documented route for continuous playback in the cited Owncast material. Follow the current example’s configuration for the ffplayout service and connect its RTMP output to Owncast.

If the content source is a YouTube playlist

The reviewed Owncast documentation does not provide a direct YouTube-playlist-to-Owncast setup or a YouTube playlist extraction command. Select a separate playout application or workflow that can continuously read your intended source and publish RTMP to Owncast. Before relying on it, verify source availability, behavior when a video ends or becomes unavailable, reconnect behavior, and the rights and platform rules for rebroadcasting the content. Those capabilities depend on the chosen playout workflow and are not established by the Owncast example.

Set video quality for the server you have

Owncast advises matching broadcast quality to available server resources. Its documentation recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for assured compatibility and a two-second keyframe interval. It gives the following example settings as starting guidance, not as a guarantee that a server, connection or continuous broadcast can sustain them:

Example setting Resolution Frame rate Video bitrate Keyframe interval
720p example 1280×720 30 fps 3000k 2 seconds
1080p example 1920×1080 60 fps 5000k 2 seconds

These values are Owncast documentation examples reviewed in 2026. Actual capacity depends on the host’s processing resources, available network bandwidth and the workload; test the selected settings under the conditions you expect to run.

Keep YouTube HLS requirements separate

YouTube’s HLS guidance describes sending a stream into YouTube Live, not sending a stream into Owncast. It specifies HLS TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT requests. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because video is sent in segments. These requirements do not change Owncast’s documented RTMP receiving setup or prove that Owncast imports a YouTube playlist.

Troubleshoot the common setup failures

  • The web interface does not load: Check that the container is running, that port 8080 is mapped and permitted through the host firewall, and that you are using the correct server address.
  • The publisher cannot connect: Confirm that Owncast is running, TCP port 1935 is reachable, the publisher is configured for RTMP, and the server URL and stream key match the Owncast settings.
  • Authentication fails after setup: Check whether you changed the stream key. The admin password and stream key are distinct credentials; make sure the publisher is using the current key rather than the documented default.
  • Playback stops when one video ends: Owncast is the receiver, not the playlist player. Check the separate playout system’s queue, looping configuration and handling of unavailable files or sources.
  • The stream is unstable at the selected quality: Lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate and check host processing and network capacity. The published example values are guidance, not a capacity guarantee.
  • The stream does not recover after a disconnect: Inspect both the publisher’s reconnect behavior and the Owncast container’s status. The Compose restart policy covers the container process; it does not establish automatic recovery of every upstream source or playout workflow.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is simply to keep pre-recorded videos live on YouTube 24/7, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating Owncast and a separate playout stack: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not receive a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or pricing. Start the free first day.
