Start with the spare PC if it can encode your actual video continuously and your home upload connection remains stable with enough headroom. Choose an OVHcloud VPS when running the stream away from home is worth the recurring cost and you can configure and monitor a server. Neither option is a guaranteed fit based on a spec sheet alone: test the exact setup before relying on it.

Choose a bitrate that your encoder and upload path can sustain
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include these bitrate ranges. They are guidance for the selected output, not a guarantee that a particular computer or VPS can encode it smoothly.

These ranges and the settings below are from YouTube Help’s live encoder recommendations; the accessed page does not state a publication year. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and keyframes no more than four seconds apart. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion.
Measure upload headroom and test before going live
YouTube recommends testing outbound bandwidth, monitoring stream health, and keeping 20% spare upload capacity above the total stream bitrate. A single speed-test result does not establish sustained performance. Test the connection while accounting for other household or server traffic, then run a test stream and check YouTube’s health indicators before depending on it.

Protect the stream key
YouTube stream keys act like a password and an address for the encoder. Keep the key private and reset it if it may have been exposed. YouTube explains stream keys in its stream setup guidance.
How to decide whether a spare PC is enough
- Check the workload. Identify the source video’s resolution, frame rate, and codec, then decide the output settings and encoder you will use. The PC must handle that workload continuously without encoder overload.
- Check the uplink. Measure outbound capacity under realistic conditions. Compare it with the total stream bitrate and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Run a sustained test. Start the encoder with the intended video and settings, monitor the PC for overload, and check YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Test for long enough to expose heat, instability, or network fluctuations that a brief test may miss.
- Include operating costs. Estimate the PC’s electricity use and consider your internet plan and maintenance needs. Since power draw and local electricity rates differ, there is no reliable universal break-even figure.
- Choose the PC only if it passes. If encoding stays stable and the uplink has headroom, using existing hardware is a practical first experiment. If not, lower the output settings or compare a remote option.

Check the exact plan and location at purchase: prices and availability vary by market, and the US VPS page notes monthly quotas for Mumbai, Singapore, and Sydney locations—1 TB for VPS-1/2, 3 TB for VPS-3/4, and 4 TB for VPS-5/6. Do not assume the Worldwide page’s “unlimited traffic” wording applies identically in every region. See OVHcloud’s US VPS page for those location-specific terms.
OVHcloud’s July 2026 announcement describes the range as its 2027 VPS plans and states a 99.9% SLA. That is the provider’s published SLA claim, not evidence that your particular continuous stream will achieve that uptime. Review the applicable terms at OVHcloud’s VPS 2027 announcement.

When a VPS is worth evaluating
- You want the encoder to run independently of the computer and internet connection at home.
- You can install and configure the streaming software, keep credentials secure, and monitor the server.
- You have tested that the selected VPS can encode your actual content at the intended settings. vCores, RAM, and public bandwidth alone do not establish this.
- You have checked the traffic terms for the specific VPS plan and location, along with the route quality between that server and YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
Do not select a VPS just because its advertised network rate is greater than your video bitrate. Encoding capacity, sustained performance, location, route quality, and any regional traffic quota all matter.
Set up and test either method before relying on it
- Verify your channel. Confirm livestream access and check for restrictions before configuring the encoder.
- Prepare the video and encoder. Select a YouTube-recommended output bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate; use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Configure RTMPS where supported.
- Add the stream key privately. Enter the key in your encoder’s stream settings; do not publish it or share it. Reset it if compromised.
- Run a test stream. Use the intended video and settings. Check both encoder performance and YouTube stream health rather than assuming the PC or VPS specs are sufficient.
- Check the loop and the content. Confirm that the video restarts as intended, watch for interruptions, and verify current YouTube policies for the specific content and channel. General livestream setup guidance does not settle the policy or monetization status of every continuous prerecorded loop.
- Monitor after launch. Watch for encoder overload, dropped frames, upload instability, or a lost YouTube connection. Keep access to the host and stream key so you can diagnose or restart the setup.
