For outdoor lights where there is no receptacle, self-contained solar fixtures are the most direct option: a panel charges a battery in the fixture, so no interconnecting cable or outlet is needed. They work best where the panel receives useful daytime sun. If the site is shaded, a typical low-voltage kit is not a workaround—it generally needs a transformer plugged into an outdoor GFCI receptacle.

UL distinguishes line-voltage, low-voltage, and photovoltaic (PV)-plus-battery luminaires. It says PV-powered luminaires can be installed without interconnecting wiring. UL Solutions’ overview of landscape and outdoor luminaires also notes that PV fixtures convert sunlight, charge and discharge a battery, and produce light—functions that make proper safety evaluation important.
How to choose and place solar lights
Match the fixture to the job
- Use solar pathway lights to mark a route or illuminate a garden edge.
- Choose solar string lights for decorative patio or garden lighting; do not assume they will provide strong task or security lighting without model-specific evidence.
Check sunlight before buying
The Home Depot’s installation guide recommends six to eight hours of bright sunlight per day for solar landscape lights to fully charge. This is general installation guidance, not a runtime or brightness guarantee for every product. A shaded site or a panel blocked by buildings, trees, or other obstacles may not provide the conditions assumed by a product’s stated performance.

Compare product details
Check the intended use, stated runtime and brightness, whether the battery can be serviced, the fixture’s outdoor exposure marking, and its installation instructions. Performance varies by model; no particular runtime, brightness, battery life, or price can be inferred from the lighting type alone.

Why low-voltage lights still need a power source
Low-voltage landscape lighting reduces voltage at the fixtures, but it is not necessarily outlet-free. The Home Depot installation guide describes a typical system in which a transformer plugs into an outdoor-rated GFCI receptacle and steps household current down to 12 volts for the lights. The system also uses cable and compatible fixtures. If no suitable receptacle exists, this arrangement does not independently solve the power problem.
What line-voltage outdoor lighting involves
Line-voltage fixtures are hardwired rather than powered by an onboard solar battery. The Home Depot buying guide describes a junction box and protective conduit; its installation guide recommends a licensed electrician because the work is complex. Electrical and permit rules depend on location, so these broad descriptions do not establish what a particular jurisdiction requires. Follow current local requirements and the fixture’s instructions, and use qualified electrical help as appropriate.

Check the fixture’s weather exposure rating
The Home Depot buying guide describes wet-rated fixtures as designed for direct exposure to wind and rain, while damp-rated fixtures are intended for locations without direct exposure to rain and moisture. Check the specific fixture’s marking and installation instructions against the place where it will be mounted; do not rely on a general label for every product or installation.

Outdoor fixtures are evaluated according to their power source and construction. UL notes that PV luminaires combine sunlight conversion, battery charging and discharge, and lighting, and that these processes generate heat. It also notes that lithium-ion batteries require careful management to reduce fire risk. Choose a properly evaluated fixture and follow the manufacturer’s instructions; these general points do not establish the safety performance of any individual product.
