Organize browser favorites by first removing links you no longer need, then grouping the useful ones into a few clear folders. Favorites and bookmarks are the same kind of saved webpage link; Microsoft Edge uses the label “Favorites.” Use your browser’s manager to search, edit, move, or sort links, and export a backup before major cleanup or a browser move.
What browser favorites are—and how to start organizing them
A favorite or bookmark is a saved link to a webpage you want to revisit. The name varies by browser: Firefox calls these links bookmarks, while Microsoft Edge calls them Favorites. The steps and labels below are browser-specific where noted; menus can vary by version and platform.
Begin with a quick audit. Remove links that are duplicates, no longer work, or no longer serve a purpose. Keep the links you still use, then group them into a small set of folders with names that make sense to you. For example, you might use Work, Learning, Household, and Read Later. These are examples, not required categories.
Group links into folders and, where available, tags
Use folders for broad categories
Create folders around the way you expect to look for a page. A folder should narrow the search, not become another place to sort through a long unsorted list. Move each retained link into the most useful folder, and rename vague titles if that will make them easier to recognize later.

Use tags when one folder is not enough
Firefox supports tags, which let you label a bookmark by topic in addition to organizing it in folders. Tags can help when a page fits more than one theme—for instance, a saved article might relate to both work and learning. Firefox’s bookmark manager also supports searching, updating, and syncing bookmarks. See Firefox’s bookmark help for its current controls.
Find, edit, move, or sort saved links
Organization is useful only if you can retrieve a page when you need it. Open your browser’s bookmark or favorites manager and try finding a saved page by its title or folder. If you cannot locate it quickly, move it to a clearer folder or make its name more distinctive.

- Chrome: Chrome’s bookmark tools cover finding, editing, sorting, and moving bookmarks. The available controls and exact menu path may differ across devices. Check Chrome’s current bookmark instructions.
- Microsoft Edge: Edge lets you manage favorites in folders, sort or reorder them, edit them, and delete them. You can reach favorites from the favorites bar or the favorites menu. See Microsoft’s Edge favorites guide.
After sorting, test your setup: look for a few saved pages using the method you expect to use—folder, tag, manager search, favorites bar, or menu. If you have to remember an overly precise folder path, simplify the categories.
Back up favorites before cleanup or a browser switch
Before deleting many links or changing browsers, make an export if your browser offers one. Firefox supports exporting bookmarks to an HTML file for backup or transfer. Chrome’s import guidance includes importing an HTML file exported from another browser. Firefox explains bookmark export, and Google explains importing bookmarks and settings into Chrome.

An HTML bookmark export is for saved links; do not assume it also transfers passwords, extensions, or every browser setting. Keep the export somewhere you can find it, and confirm your important links are present in the destination browser before removing the original copy.
What to check when moving favorites between browsers
Choose the import route supported by the browser you are moving to. Firefox describes importing bookmarks from Chrome, Safari, or Edge; Chrome documents importing bookmarks and settings, including from an HTML export. The import may not reproduce the source browser’s folder structure or other data exactly, so inspect the imported links afterward.

For continuing access across devices, check whether your browser’s sync feature is enabled and which account it uses. Firefox’s bookmark guidance includes synchronization, but the cited Chrome and Edge pages do not establish equivalent sync details here. Menu paths, available options, and cross-device behavior can depend on browser version and platform.
Choose an organization method that fits your browser
The official guidance supports different controls in each browser; it does not establish that one is universally better. Firefox’s cited help covers folders, tags, searching, updating, synchronization, and importing from other browsers. Chrome’s cited pages cover bookmark management and importing, including an HTML-file route. Edge’s cited help covers folders, sorting and reordering, editing, deleting, and access from the favorites bar or menu.

If you move between browsers, prioritize an export or import path and verify the result rather than assuming every browser handles favorites identically.
