Choose The Witness if you want to explore a quiet island and discover the rules behind its line puzzles for yourself. Choose Order of the Sinking Star if you want a broader, interconnected adventure built around multiple puzzle systems, playable characters, and a more explicit story. Its scheduled October 8, 2026 launch is still one day away, so that recommendation is based on pre-release information—not a verdict on the finished game.
How the puzzle-solving differs
The Witness: learn by observing
The Witness centers on tracing paths across panels. New symbols and rules complicate the puzzles, and the game gives little tutorial or story-sequence guidance. Instead, players explore and infer how each puzzle works, then look for ways to apply what they have learned elsewhere. TIME reviewer Matt Peckham’s January 25, 2016 review describes an island players can explore from the start, with puzzles available in many different orders. Read the TIME review.
Order of the Sinking Star: combine systems
Order of the Sinking Star is presented as a puzzle adventure whose mechanics vary across four worlds and intertwine as those worlds meet. The Steam listing describes dozens of mechanics, while a July 2026 pre-release hands-on report describes systems including pushing, pulling, swapping, beams, and abilities specific to different characters. That points to a more varied, layered approach than The Witness’s panel-based line puzzles, though the hands-on account is not a review of the complete game. See the Steam listing and read the PlayStation Blog hands-on report.
World, story, and freedom to explore
| What matters | The Witness | Order of the Sinking Star |
|---|---|---|
| Setting and progression | A largely unexplained island to explore from the start; puzzles can be tackled in different orders, according to TIME’s 2016 review. | Four distinct worlds with their own mechanics, characters, and stories, according to the Steam description. |
| Story delivery | Abstract and indirect, with meaning suggested through the environment, as described in TIME’s 2016 review. | More explicit character and narrative presentation, according to a July 2026 pre-release hands-on report. |
| Puzzle structure | Line-drawing panels introduce symbols and unfamiliar logic. | Mechanics and character abilities are described as combining across worlds. |
The Witness suits players who enjoy drawing their own conclusions from a setting that does not explain itself. Order of the Sinking Star appears better suited to players who want named characters and a more visible narrative thread alongside the puzzles. That distinction comes from a pre-release hands-on account, so it should not be mistaken for a full-game assessment.

How large are the games?
Thekla and the Steam store advertise over 1,000 handcrafted puzzles for Order of the Sinking Star; Steam also advertises hundreds of hours of gameplay. These are publisher/store claims, not independently measured completion times. The PlayStation Blog hands-on report refers to 900+ levels and multiple endings, using a different measure from the publisher’s puzzle count. TIME’s 2016 review reports over 600 puzzles for The Witness.
Those figures do not establish which game is longer: they come from different sources, dates, and counting methods, and there is no directly comparable independent measurement. If sheer scale is part of the appeal, Order of the Sinking Star is being marketed as the larger puzzle collection, but its advertised hours should not be treated as a guaranteed playtime.

Which one should you play?
- Pick The Witness if you want focused line puzzles, an island to roam at your own pace, and the satisfaction of working out rules with minimal guidance.
- Consider Order of the Sinking Star if you want multiple puzzle mechanics, playable heroes, connected worlds, and a more explicit story. Its launch is scheduled for October 8, 2026, but final quality and player reception are not yet established as of October 7.
The choice is about puzzle style, not a proven ranking. The Witness is the known option with a decade of release history; Order of the Sinking Star is the more ambitious-sounding alternative on paper, but its advertised scale and pre-release impressions cannot establish how the finished game will compare.
