What kind of game is it?

Order of the Sinking Star is a narrative puzzle adventure developed by Thekla Inc., with Jonathan Blow as project lead, according to the official game website. Its design centers on multiple playable heroes, distinct puzzle rules, and a hub that lets players choose between several paths.

The publisher promotes the game as containing more than 1,000 handcrafted puzzles, dozens of mechanics, and hundreds of hours of unique gameplay. These are promotional descriptions rather than independently measured counts or playtime estimates; the actual time required will depend on how you play and solve the puzzles.

How do the four worlds and Overworld fit together?

The publisher describes a central Overworld with four initially branching regions that can be tackled without a single required order. Each has its own characters and puzzle mechanics. Later, Gold Rooms connect the worlds into hybrid areas, combining systems and bringing characters together. The descriptions below outline the announced structure, not findings from a completed playthrough.

The East: The Mirror Isles

A Trader crosses an archipelago using magic mirrors that swap the Trader and objects with their reflections. The core challenge is working out where to stand and how to use those reflections to reach other islands.

The West: The Promise

An Explorer navigates subterranean caves using gems and colored light beams. Combining beams enables abilities such as phasing through walls, breaking boulders, and teleporting over long distances.

The South: Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes

A marooned Sailor travels among islands and waterways. The publisher highlights route planning, redirecting rivers, skipping stones, and riding lily pads as parts of this region’s traversal puzzles.

Gold Rooms: puzzles that mix worlds

According to the publisher, Gold Rooms eventually link the worlds and introduce six dual-combination areas. Examples include pairing the Explorer’s light beams with the Trader’s mirrors, or using the moving crew’s abilities in the Sailor’s water puzzles. The publisher’s world overview describes these combinations as part of the game’s intended progression.
