Start by reading the board, not by guessing at a move: identify the grid, likely walkable space, and objects that stand apart from the background. Then learn each region’s mechanics on their own terms, and switch branches when you get stuck. Thekla describes Order of the Sinking Star as a large, nonlinear puzzle adventure with four distinct worlds; its official overview says you can backtrack and explore them at your own pace.
What kind of puzzle game is Order of the Sinking Star?
Thekla Inc. describes the game as a narrative adventure with more than 1,000 interconnected, handcrafted puzzles, distinct playable heroes, evolving mechanics, and a mystery revealed through play and collected notes. Those are the developer’s scale and story descriptions, not an independently measured puzzle count. Thekla also says the most dedicated solvers have more than 500 hours ahead of them; treat that as promotional context, not a typical completion-time estimate. Thekla’s official game site and FAQ
The game’s Overworld branches into four regions, each with its own characters, rules, hazards, and secrets. The official overview describes backtracking between them and says there is “no single ‘right way’ to proceed.” That freedom is useful when a puzzle stops yielding progress: you can explore elsewhere instead of assuming you have missed a required move or chosen the wrong route. Read the playable area before experimenting
Before interacting, take a moment to trace the grid and separate likely play space from walls and background. Look for objects whose contrast, scale, lighting, or placement makes them stand out. Art lead Ethan Scheu said the team uses visual contrast to distinguish playable areas from surrounding scenery: “The primary tool for this is creating visual contrast between these areas.” Treat careful visual scanning as a sensible habit based on the developers’ design description, not as a confirmed tutorial rule or guarantee that every object is marked the same way. Learn what a region’s mechanics are asking you to notice
Each region introduces a different puzzle vocabulary. Thekla’s overview describes a northern group of heroes with complementary abilities; an eastern mirror realm where characters swap positions with their reflections; a western cavern realm where colored beams activate abilities; and a southern water region built around routing and stone-skipping. Start by observing how the current region’s characters and objects behave. Do not assume a useful tactic from one region will work unchanged in another. Thekla’s regional overview
What should you do when you get stuck?
- Pause and inspect. Recheck the grid, boundaries, and visually distinct objects before trying another interaction. The visual-design guidance above is a way to orient yourself, not an official step-by-step solution method.
- Change branches. If a route remains difficult, leave it and explore another region. Thekla says players can backtrack and choose their own pace; the overview does not prescribe an optimal order or specify unlock requirements.
- Return with fresh context. When you come back, reconsider what the puzzle’s local mechanics allow rather than repeating an approach that has not worked. This is a general problem-solving suggestion, not a verified move-by-move technique for a particular puzzle.
The game’s broader structure makes switching paths especially sensible: Thekla says clearing Gold Rooms connects realms and unlocks hybrid areas that combine characters and puzzle systems. Keep familiar mechanics in mind as the world opens up, but avoid assuming a particular combination or solution until the game shows you how it works. Thekla’s overview of connected realms

How much does the game explain about controls and solutions?
The official materials described here establish the world structure and broad mechanics, but they do not establish detailed launch-build controls, undo or reset rules, in-game hints, save behavior, a recommended beginner route, or puzzle-by-puzzle solutions. Check the released game’s own prompts and official help materials for those specifics rather than relying on assumptions about how another puzzle game works.
