Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) is an integrated suite of enterprise applications that helps organizations manage a range of business functions, from finance and human resources to procurement and supply chain operations. It is not a single-purpose tool: its modules share a common application environment while serving different business needs.
What does Oracle E-Business Suite do?
EBS brings business processes into a connected set of applications. Oracle describes the suite as designed to help organizations make informed decisions, reduce costs, and enhance performance. In practice, an organization uses the relevant applications to manage work such as financial transactions, employee processes, customer interactions, purchasing, projects, and supply-chain activity.
The range of functions means an organization may use several parts of EBS together, rather than adopting every application. Which parts matter depends on the processes it needs to support.

These are broad functional areas, not a guarantee that every EBS installation includes or uses every application. Oracle’s E-Business Suite overview describes the suite’s scope; organizations should identify the specific applications relevant to their own implementation.

Is Oracle E-Business Suite an ERP system?
EBS is an enterprise application suite with a broad scope that includes core enterprise resource planning functions, such as financial management and procurement, alongside customer, service, human capital, project, and supply-chain applications. Calling it simply an ERP system can be a useful shorthand, but it can understate the breadth of the suite.
How do EBS applications fit together?
Oracle’s Release 12.2 Concepts guide describes an architecture with a technology layer between the technology stack and product-specific modules. Shared technology products—including Applications DBA, Application Object Library, Workflow, and Application Framework—support the functional applications. This helps explain how EBS can combine distinct business areas within a shared environment; the exact setup depends on the installation.
What does using EBS look like?
Oracle’s User’s Guide covers both HTML-based and forms-based applications. It organizes common user tasks around activities such as querying and entering data, scheduling and monitoring requests, and running reports. The interface and available tasks vary by application and user responsibilities.
Which release and support context should you know?
Oracle’s documentation library and current What’s New material are for Release 12.2. Updates are described by application area, and update ranges can differ across those areas; do not assume that every EBS module shares the same update number. Check Oracle’s current Release 12.2 documentation library and What’s New material for the application in question.
Oracle’s E-Business Suite Support page states that Premier Support for on-premises Continuous Innovation releases will continue through at least 2037, and that Oracle will review annually whether to extend that offering. This is Oracle’s stated support position, not a guarantee beyond the published terms. Oracle also describes a choice between remaining on-premises and moving to cloud with the same applications and customizations; confirm the current terms and options directly with Oracle for a specific environment.

The Release 12.2 library includes the Concepts guide for architecture and components, alongside user and application documentation. Developers and administrators looking for deeper material on customization and extension may also find Oracle E-Business Suite Development & Extensibility Handbook by Anil Passi and Vladimir Ajvaz useful as optional technical reading; it is not required to understand what EBS is.
