For most Samsung refrigerators sold in the US, Samsung recommends setting the refrigerator to 38°F and the freezer to -2°F. If your model displays bars instead of temperatures, Samsung recommends three lit bars for each compartment. Check your model’s manual if its controls or recommendations differ: some models have different targets.
What temperature should you set a Samsung refrigerator to?
Samsung’s US guidance recommends 38°F for the refrigerator and -2°F for the freezer for most models. For models with bar displays, use three lit bars in both compartments. These are manufacturer-recommended control settings, not the same thing as food-safety thresholds.
Samsung attributes the thresholds of keeping refrigerated food below 40°F and frozen food below 0°F to the USDA. Those limits describe food-storage temperatures; they do not mean every Samsung model’s recommended set point will match them. Use your model’s manual when its guidance differs
Samsung says some models have different recommendations. For example, the manual for Dacor model DRF36C500SR specifies 37°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer. That advice applies to that model; consult your own refrigerator’s manual rather than treating either set of numbers as universal. The manual is available from Samsung’s DRF36C500SR support page.

Convertible models have mode-specific settings
Samsung says a convertible refrigerator defaults to 37°F in Fridge mode and 0°F in Freezer mode. The available temperature ranges differ by mode. Power Freeze temporarily increases freezing and energy use. For the ranges and controls that apply to your appliance, use Samsung’s convertible refrigerator guidance.
How to change the temperature
The button sequence depends on the model and control panel. Samsung’s US instructions cover several types of controls, including Family Hub through SmartThings (or Fridge Manager on some older models), repeated presses of Fridge or Freezer buttons, arrow-based menus, and compartment-conversion controls on some top-freezer and upright-freezer models. - Identify your refrigerator’s model code. Find the code on the appliance label or in its documentation, then locate the matching manual through Samsung Support.
- Open the instructions for your control panel. Use the manual if the panel labels or menus do not match Samsung’s general guide.
- Adjust the refrigerator and freezer separately, as applicable. Select the recommended target for your model and mode.
- Wait before judging the change. Give the appliance time to reach its new setting before making another adjustment or measuring the result.
How to check the actual temperature
The control-panel number is a set point; the compartment may take time to reach it. Samsung recommends checking the temperature with a refrigerator/freezer thermometer and gives different placement instructions for each compartment:
- Refrigerator: Put a thermometer in a glass of water near the middle of the compartment. With the doors closed, Samsung says an accurate reading may take up to eight hours.
- Freezer: Place the thermometer between frozen packages, not in water.
After changing a setting, wait 28 hours before rechecking, according to Samsung. Opening the doors repeatedly affects the measurement. Follow the complete procedure in Samsung’s guide to setting and measuring temperatures.

Why is your Samsung refrigerator not cooling enough?
Samsung says the appliance can take up to 28 hours to reach a new setting. If it still does not cool adequately after that period, use this check before assuming the control is faulty:
- Confirm that the selected temperature is appropriate for your model and operating mode.
- Make sure there is room for air to circulate around the appliance.
- Check that food is not blocking the internal vents.
- Look for an error on the display or persistent blinking.
Avoid repeatedly changing the temperature while the refrigerator is stabilizing. If cooling remains inadequate or the display indicates a problem, Samsung recommends contacting support or service. See Samsung’s refrigerator cooling troubleshooting guide.
