Opera Developer continues as a separate, experimental build. If you want to try selected upcoming features inside Opera One instead, Opera’s current in-product option is Early Bird.
Opera Developer vs Opera Beta at a glance
| What you’re comparing | Opera Developer | Opera Beta | Early Bird in Opera One |
|---|---|---|---|
| Status | Still published; Opera announced Developer version 136.0.5988.0 on August 12, 2026. That is a dated release example, not a claim about the latest version. | Discontinued. Its final release was version 126.0.5750.30 on January 14, 2026. | Opera describes Early Bird as a way to try selected upcoming features within Opera One. |
| What it tests | Ideas and changes in active development, including experiments that may never reach the stable browser. | Historically, the next main release at a stage closer to intended ship quality. | Selected features still in development, which Opera describes as more stable than Developer features. |
| Risk and fit | For developers, advanced users, and enthusiasts prepared for instability or crashes. | Not a current option. | For Opera One users who want to opt into selected experiments without switching to a separate Developer build. |
What was the difference between Beta and Developer?
When both channels were available, they represented different points in Opera’s release process. Beta was a preview of the next main release and was intended to be closer to the quality Opera planned to ship. Developer exposed newer work earlier, so features could be less polished and more likely to change or cause problems. Opera’s 2014 explainer described that distinction; it is useful for understanding the old channel names, not for predicting today’s release schedule. Opera’s explanation of its browser streams
What does Opera Developer offer today?
Opera Developer remains the separate early-build option. Opera says it is aimed at advanced users, developers, and people interested in trying new ideas. Experiments can change or disappear before a stable release, and Opera warns that the browser can become unstable or crash. It is best treated as a test browser rather than the only browser you rely on for everyday work. Opera Developer product page

What replaced Opera Beta for trying features?
Opera introduced Early Bird mode in Opera One as the in-product route for trying selected upcoming features. Opera characterizes Early Bird features as more stable than Developer features, while noting that they are still in development. Early Bird is not a replacement Beta channel with the same release-stage role: it is an opt-in feature-testing mode within Opera One. Opera’s Early Bird announcement and Opera One R3 announcement
Opera Beta’s end date and what happened to the channel
Opera announced on December 19, 2025 that Beta support would stop on January 14, 2026. On that date, Opera published version 126.0.5750.30 as the final Beta release. Beta should therefore be described as a discontinued channel, not as a current download that receives regular updates. Opera’s announcement and final Beta release notice

Were the old update schedules different?
Opera’s Desktop Team wrote in January 2014 that Beta updates came weekly, Developer releases appeared approximately once or twice per week, and major stable releases arrived approximately every six weeks. Those figures describe Opera’s schedule at that time only; they are not current cadence guidance, particularly now that Beta has ended.

Before the January 14, 2026 cutoff, Opera advised Beta users to sign in to an Opera account, enable Sync, choose “Sync everything,” and repeat the process in the destination Opera browser. Opera named settings, passwords, extensions, bookmarks, and history among the data users could sync. Its guidance was explicitly for migration before the cutoff; current availability of Sync from a still-installed Beta build after that date is not established.
