OpenShot 3.5 made its newer timeline the default and added changes to editing, effects, audio, exports and hardware handling. OpenShot reports that 3.5 was about 35% faster overall in its benchmarks, but that figure is the developer’s result—not an independently verified guarantee for every computer or project. Version 3.5 is no longer the latest release, so check OpenShot’s current stable download before installing.
What changed in OpenShot 3.5?
The release’s biggest day-to-day change is the default editing experience: OpenShot switched to its newer QWidget timeline. The 3.5.0 project release was published on March 20, 2026; OpenShot’s announcement followed on March 16, 2026. OpenShot’s release announcement and the v3.5.0 release entry describe the changes.
A more responsive timeline
OpenShot says the timeline improvements address zooming, scrolling, dragging, trimming, snapping, scrubbing and editing multiple clips, with a particular focus on larger projects. The keyframe panel is enabled by default, and the release also improves selection behavior, clip thumbnails and feedback while trimming. These are workflow changes to try against your own project size and editing habits; the announcement does not establish a universal responsiveness gain for every setup.
Performance: the 35% claim
OpenShot reports that version 3.5 was about 35% faster overall in its benchmarks, with particularly large gains in effects and frame processing. The announcement does not provide enough independent benchmark methodology to treat that as a consistent speedup across computers, codecs, effects or projects. Consider it the publisher’s reported result, not a promise about your export time or playback.

Exports and hardware decoding
OpenShot says it updated export presets to target smaller files and better quality, revised encoder defaults, and improved hardware-decoding checks. It also describes safer fallback behavior when hardware decoding fails. The release materials do not establish a fixed reduction in file size or export time: results depend on the project, codec, settings and hardware.
Audio transitions and waveforms
Timeline transitions can now create audio fade-ins, fade-outs and equal-power cross-fades. OpenShot also lists faster audio handling and waveform generation. These additions make common audio transitions available in the timeline, without requiring an editor to describe or configure a transition as a separate manual fade operation.

Chroma Key and masks
The release makes a new Chroma Key mode the default; OpenShot describes it as producing softer edges and handling halos better. Mask support has also expanded across effects, with improvements to animated mask behavior and additional controls. The quality of a key or mask still depends on the footage and how the effect is configured.
Stability and testing
OpenShot lists fixes involving playback, timeline editing, caching, missing files and platform-specific issues. The release also notes expanded unit and UI tests and replay-based testing. Those changes indicate work on reliability, but they cannot guarantee that every project will be trouble-free.

Experimental ComfyUI integration
OpenShot 3.5 includes an experimental ComfyUI integration that requires setup. The announcement describes generation workflows and tracking or segmentation work, including pipelines related to SAM2. Treat it as an early, advanced feature rather than a ready-to-use built-in workflow for every editor.

OpenShot’s published system requirements page was modified on May 19, 2023, before version 3.5. Its figures are useful context, but they are not newly verified 3.5-specific requirements.

If you need to open a project created in 3.5, take care before downgrading: OpenShot warns that projects saved in newer versions might not work with older versions. Keep a backup of the project before opening or saving it in another version.
If you are assessing what 3.5 changed, compare timeline responsiveness on your own larger projects, export quality and file size, hardware support on your system, masking and effect workflows, audio transitions, and stability with your media. The available release information does not provide controlled comparisons with other editors, so it cannot establish that OpenShot is universally faster or better than alternatives.
