Are OpenAI and Anthropic business data used to train models?
Both providers publish protections for business data, but their statements are framed differently. OpenAI says inputs and outputs from ChatGPT Enterprise, Business, Edu, Healthcare, Teachers, and its API platform are not used to train or improve models by default. Its API documentation also describes an opt-in path for data sharing. For procurement, treat these as provider commitments tied to specific services and agreements—not independent measurements of model behavior. Identify the exact plan, API, account type, and any opt-in before deciding what data may be submitted.

These figures describe different things: OpenAI’s figure concerns abuse-monitoring logs, while Anthropic’s concerns backend deletion of standard API inputs and outputs. Neither should be read as a universal guarantee that every related record, safety signal, or item of application state is erased on that schedule.
What OpenAI API ZDR does—and does not—mean
OpenAI ZDR is not automatically available to every organization; eligible organizations must be approved. Even when enabled, some endpoints or capabilities may retain application state. Check the current endpoint-specific data table against the exact workflow, including tools or features that store state, rather than relying on the ZDR label alone. Modified Abuse Monitoring and ZDR are controls over eligible API data handling, not a blanket promise about every OpenAI product.

What Anthropic’s 30-day API period excludes
Anthropic’s published API period has exceptions, including services explicitly assigned longer retention, separate contractual terms, policy enforcement, and legal obligations. The July 1, 2026 policy also says inputs and outputs associated with chats flagged by automated systems as Usage Policy violations may be retained for up to two years, and trust-and-safety classification scores for up to seven years. Data associated with feedback submissions and bug reports may be retained for five years. Those are policy-specific periods, not the standard API deletion schedule.
What happens to saved conversations in ChatGPT and Claude?
API requests and saved chat histories are different data surfaces. The cited OpenAI sources allow qualifying organizations to configure retention but do not establish a single default or complete minimum-retention matrix across ChatGPT products. Business customers should verify the retention behavior for their actual plan, workspace settings, and contract rather than assume API controls govern saved chats.

Anthropic says commercial products that save conversations retain chats and coding sessions to provide continuity. Users can delete conversations; they disappear from history immediately and are removed from backend systems within 30 days, subject to applicable exceptions. Anthropic says flagged Usage Policy data may be held longer under the periods described above.
Claude Enterprise retention settings
Anthropic’s current Enterprise help article says administrators can set custom chat and project retention periods with a 30-day minimum; months are treated as 30 days. The retention clock is based on the last activity. Project retention takes precedence for chats inside a project, and projects otherwise remain indefinitely by default. Which security controls should buyers compare?
Compare controls by product tier, region, and workflow. Similar feature names do not prove equivalent coverage: confirm which data is protected, which users and systems are in scope, and whether the control is included in the quoted plan.

How to make a practical procurement comparison
Before approving either service, record the workflow and required safeguards rather than comparing provider names in isolation:

- Name the exact service and plan. Separate consumer accounts, commercial chat products, coding tools, and API use; record the region and teams that will use each.
- Classify the submitted data. List prompts, outputs, uploaded files, feedback, and any sensitive or regulated information, then decide which classes are permitted.
