In a March 2024 demonstration, Figure 01 answered questions about a scene, handed a person an apple, picked up trash and put dishes into a drying rack. The clip is an arresting example of language-guided robot behavior—but it is a short prototype demo, not evidence that the robot could reliably manage a home.
What Figure 01 did in the video
In the clip, a person asks, “What do you see right now?” Figure 01 identifies a red apple, a plate, a drying rack, cups and the person nearby. Asked, “Can I have something to eat?”, it selects the apple and hands it over. It then picks up trash and places a plate and a cup in the drying rack, according to HotHardware’s March 15, 2024 account.
The robot speaks in a natural-sounding voice in the video. That observation describes the presentation, not a measured assessment of speech quality or how often the system responds correctly. VentureBeat described it as Figure’s first collaboration showcase with OpenAI and noted a delay in the conversational responses.

How Figure and OpenAI described the system
Figure’s March 13, 2024 explanation said OpenAI models provided high-level visual and language intelligence, while Figure’s neural networks handled fast, low-level dexterous actions. Figure described the video as neural-network driven; that description is reproduced by the OpenAI Developer Community. It is the company’s account of its system, not an independent technical audit.

VentureBeat reported Figure CEO Brett Adcock’s explanation that onboard cameras fed a large vision-language model trained by OpenAI. The outlet said the exact model was unclear at the time. Adcock also said the video used end-to-end neural networks, involved no teleoperation and was filmed continuously at 1.0x speed: “The video is showing end-to-end neural networks. There is no teleop. Also, this was filmed at 1.0x speed and shot continuously.” These are claims attributed to Adcock, not independently verified findings.
What the demonstration establishes—and what it doesn’t
The clip shows a robot responding to spoken requests and carrying out a limited sequence of object recognition and tabletop manipulations. It does not establish how consistently Figure 01 could repeat those tasks, how quickly it would complete them across attempts, or how safely it would behave around people in varied homes. The reviewed reporting provides no controlled benchmarks for task reliability, speed, safety, performance in different environments or failure rates.

VentureBeat characterized the video as a prototype demonstration and said commercial deployment would require more work. For a fair comparison with another humanoid demo, separate what the video visibly shows from what a company says about the underlying system, and from measured performance or commercial availability. The cited reporting offers a short example and company claims, not a standardized comparison dataset.

The Associated Press reported in February 2024 that Figure had no commercial product at that time. That statement describes the company then, not its current availability. Figure’s current homepage promotes Figure 03 as a general-purpose humanoid for everyday home use and says it uses Helix AI to navigate unpredictable, changing home environments. The page does not establish pricing, purchase availability or whether Figure 01 is available to buy.

AP also reported that Figure announced $675 million in venture capital funding alongside its OpenAI partnership in February 2024. HotHardware reported a $2.6 billion valuation in its March 15, 2024 article. Those are financing figures, not evidence of robot performance or sales. In AP’s report, OpenAI vice president of product and partnerships Peter Welinder said the partnership would “open up new possibilities for how robots can help in everyday life.”
