OpenAI says an attacker accessed data held by Mixpanel, its former web analytics provider—not OpenAI’s own systems. The exported dataset may have included names, email addresses, approximate locations, browser and device details, referring websites, and account IDs for some API-platform users and a limited number of ChatGPT users. OpenAI says chats, prompts, API keys, passwords, and payment information were not exposed. The main risk it identifies is more convincing phishing, not stolen login credentials.
What happened in the Mixpanel incident?
OpenAI used Mixpanel to measure activity on the frontend of its API product, platform.openai.com. Mixpanel CEO Jen Taylor said the analytics company detected a smishing campaign—phishing conducted through text messages—on November 8, 2025, and began incident response and investigation. OpenAI says Mixpanel notified it that it was investigating and provided the affected dataset on November 25.
OpenAI published its incident notice on November 26, 2025. It described the incident as taking place within Mixpanel’s systems, not its own: “This was not a breach of OpenAI’s systems.” Mixpanel published Taylor’s account on November 27.
OpenAI clarified the scope on December 19, 2025: in addition to affected API-platform users, a limited number of ChatGPT users who had submitted help-center tickets or were logged into platform.openai.com were also affected. OpenAI said those users had already been identified and notified through its original outreach. The companies have not published a count of affected people.

What information may have been exposed?
OpenAI says the dataset exported from Mixpanel may have contained limited profile and analytics information associated with platform.openai.com accounts:
- Name provided on the account
- Associated email address
- Approximate location inferred from the browser, such as city, state, and country
- Operating system and browser
- Websites that referred the user to the service
- Organization or user IDs
This is account and usage-context metadata, not a record of what a person asked an AI model or what it answered.

Was ChatGPT data, API data, or credentials exposed?
OpenAI says chats, prompts, model responses, API requests, and API usage data were not exposed. It also says passwords, credentials, API keys, payment details, government IDs, session tokens, and authentication tokens were not exposed. These are OpenAI’s findings and statements about its investigation; they are not an independent audit of every possible negative.
For ChatGPT users, the December clarification matters: a limited number of users who submitted help-center tickets or were logged into platform.openai.com were within the affected population. OpenAI says the potentially included information for them was the profile and analytics metadata listed above—not their chats or prompts.

What should affected users do?
OpenAI says the exposed names, email addresses, and account metadata could make phishing or social-engineering attempts seem more credible. Its stated advice is to:
- Treat unexpected messages cautiously, especially messages referring to your OpenAI account or organization.
- Check that a message claiming to come from OpenAI is sent from an official OpenAI domain.
- Never provide passwords, API keys, or verification codes through email, text, or chat.
- Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on your account.
OpenAI does not recommend resetting passwords or rotating API keys because it says those credentials were not affected in this incident. That is specific to this event; it does not replace ordinary security practices or a response to any separate sign of account compromise.

What did OpenAI and Mixpanel do?
OpenAI says it removed Mixpanel from production services, reviewed the dataset, contacted impacted organizations, administrators, and users, and continued monitoring for misuse. It also says it terminated its use of Mixpanel and expanded security reviews and requirements across its vendor ecosystem.
In Mixpanel’s account of its response, the company secured affected accounts, revoked active sessions and sign-ins, rotated compromised Mixpanel credentials for impacted accounts, blocked malicious IP addresses, recorded indicators of compromise in its SIEM, reset employee passwords, reviewed logs with a third-party forensics firm, added controls, and engaged law enforcement and external cybersecurity advisers. These actions are Mixpanel’s description of its own response.
