Open WebUI separates settings into personal preferences and administrator controls. User Settings affect your account; Admin Settings govern the instance and can determine which features anyone may use. If a personal toggle is unavailable or ineffective, check whether the administrator has enabled that feature globally.
Where to find User Settings and Admin Settings
Open the profile avatar and select Settings to manage personal preferences. Administrators also have an Admin section for instance-wide configuration. Labels and available controls can differ by installation and release, so treat the paths below as the documented layout rather than a guarantee for every deployment. Why a personal feature toggle may not work
Many features use two layers of control: an administrator decides whether the instance offers the feature, and each user can then choose whether to use it personally. If the administrator disables a feature globally, users cannot enable it for themselves. Open WebUI uses autocomplete as an example of this arrangement; the same model applies to web search, image generation, direct connections, and code interpreter.
- If a switch is missing, unavailable, or has no effect, first ask an administrator whether the feature is enabled for the instance.
- If it is enabled globally, check the corresponding personal setting and any other requirements for that feature in your installation.
How instance defaults and personal choices interact
Default Interface Settings are starting values, not locked settings. An account with no saved choice for an option follows the instance’s current default. Once a user chooses a value, that personal choice takes precedence; changing the instance default later affects users who are still inheriting it, not users who have set their own value. The documented admin path is Settings > Admin > General, then UI > Default Interface Settings. Administrators can also configure defaults with the DEFAULT_INTERFACE_SETTINGS environment variable. What “Default” means on a switch
A switch marked Default means you have not changed that option and it is following the instance default. Choosing a value makes it personal. Setting it back to the current default returns it to inherited behavior.
Setting defaults with an environment variable
DEFAULT_INTERFACE_SETTINGS takes a JSON object. Its keys can include personal-setting values beyond the Interface page, including system and params. Invalid JSON, or valid JSON whose top-level value is not an object, is ignored, and no defaults are applied. Consult the official environment variable reference and defaults guide for supported keys; names and available controls may change.

Theme and language are exceptions
Theme and Language are stored in the browser rather than on the account, so they are not covered by account-level interface defaults. Administrators looking for a starting language can use the documented DEFAULT_LOCALE setting. The exception and setting are described in the Default Interface Settings documentation.

- Connect a provider for the instance: an administrator manages provider connections such as OpenAI or Ollama at Settings > Admin > Connections.
- Use a personal API key: a user manages their own key under User Settings > Connections, but this option is available only when Direct Connections are enabled.
A personal key is not a way to override an administrator’s decision to disable Direct Connections.

Change UI scale or font
Find UI Scale and Font Family under Settings > Interface. A font must already be installed on your computer; Open WebUI does not download font files for you.

Open a specific settings tab by URL
The settings URL parameter can open a named settings tab. Documented user tab IDs include general, interface, notifications, shortcuts, connections, tools, personalization, audio, data_controls, usage, archived_chats, account, and about. A non-administrator directed to an admin: tab is sent to General. The documentation describes the parameter but does not provide a single universal URL to use for every installation.
