These tools take different approaches; the sources establish their documented workflows, not a speed, image-quality, or reliability ranking.
Choose a tool by how you want to capture pages
| Need | Fit | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Capture from application code | Playwright | Page and element screenshots, full-page capture, and image bytes returned as a buffer. |
| Capture from a shell or CI workflow | shot-scraper | A command-line URL capture and a documented GitHub Actions workflow for configured screenshots. |
| Expose a self-hosted HTTP endpoint | ShotAPI | A documented service with image/PDF options and capture controls. Its README documents deployment steps, but does not establish operational reliability or maintenance status. |
| Avoid managing browser infrastructure | ScreenshotNeo | A hosted screenshot API and MCP server; clean shots are billed, while bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. See ScreenshotNeo. |
| Use another managed API | ScreenshotOne | A commercial hosted service with a documented request flow; it is not an open-source tool. |
When comparing options, consider the interface (library, CLI, self-hosted service, or hosted API), browser operations you must own, capture scope and controls, and how generated files or responses fit your workflow. Available documentation does not support a comparative cost, latency, or image-quality leaderboard.
How can I take a screenshot of a website with Playwright?
Playwright is the direct fit when your application already controls a browser page and needs an image file, element capture, or screenshot bytes for further processing. Microsoft’s documentation describes a full-page screenshot as “a screenshot of a full scrollable page, as if you had a very tall screen and the page could fit it entirely.” The examples across its language bindings differ; consult the current API reference for the language you use: Playwright screenshot documentation.
Capture a page, the full page, or an element
In the JavaScript API, the documented page capture pattern is page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' }). Set fullPage: true to capture the scrollable page rather than only the current viewport. To capture one element, use a locator’s screenshot method. The page screenshot method can also return a buffer instead of writing directly to disk, which is useful when another part of your program will process or store the image.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These are capture-method examples, not a complete browser launch program: your code must first create a browser, page, and navigate to the target URL. Use the documentation for your selected language binding and its current setup instructions rather than assuming syntax is identical across languages.
How do I capture a full-page screenshot from the command line?
shot-scraper is suited to one-off captures and repeatable shell or CI work. Its documentation for release 0.14 gives this basic installation and capture sequence:
- Install the CLI with
pip install shot-scraper. - Install its browser with
shot-scraper install. - Capture a page with
shot-scraper https://datasette.io/.
That sequence and the workflow details below come from the project’s release 0.14 PDF; check the shot-scraper documentation for applicable current commands and workflow syntax before building a new automation around it.

Schedule configured captures with GitHub Actions
The guide describes keeping a shots.yml configuration in a repository, then running a GitHub Actions workflow that installs the CLI and browser dependencies, captures the listed screenshots, and commits the generated images. Its example uses Python 3.10 and caches Playwright browser files. Those are details of that documented workflow, not a guarantee about current GitHub-hosted runner configuration.

How can I run a self-hosted screenshot HTTP service?
The ShotAPI repository documents an HTTP service for URL captures. Its README shows a GET /take route that returns an image and lists controls for full-page capture, viewport size, output format, scale factor, delay, CSS selector, and dark mode. It also documents cloning the repository, installing dependencies with npm, installing Chromium through Playwright, and running a development command; Docker build and run instructions are provided as well.

The project README identifies the software as MIT licensed. Its pricing section says “Coming Soon,” so its displayed plan prices should not be treated as verified commercial pricing. Project documentation describes the intended setup and options; it is not independent evidence of service reliability, current maintenance, or production suitability. Check the repository before adopting it.
When should you use a hosted screenshot API?
A managed API shifts browser operation away from your application team, in exchange for relying on a vendor service. ScreenshotOne documents custom screen sizes, full-page capture that scrolls to trigger lazy-loaded resources, rendering controls, and SDKs. Its setup guide describes requests using an access key and supports GET and POST. It recommends HTTPS because HTTP does not encrypt requests and can expose keys, authorization headers, or cookies in transit. See ScreenshotOne and its API setup guide.
For another hosted option, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents. The API accepts a URL in one GET request and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The following cURL example saves a WebP capture of Stripe; replace the target URL with the page you need. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

What affects a website screenshot?
A screenshot shows a page as rendered by a browser under particular viewport and loading conditions; it is not a guarantee that every site or lazy-loaded element will appear identically on every run. Full-page capture may require page scrolling to trigger lazy-loaded resources, and the chosen browser, viewport, and page behavior affect what is visible. For recurring captures, verify representative URLs and the output your application actually needs instead of assuming all pages behave alike.

- The CLI cannot find a browser: run
shot-scraper installafter installing the package, and check the workflow’s browser installation steps if running in CI. - A full-page image omits content: the page may load elements only after scrolling or after additional time. Check the tool’s documented full-page behavior and test the specific page; do not assume all lazy content is triggered the same way.
- The capture is cropped to the visible viewport: use the full-page option where supported. In Playwright, the documented page option is
fullPage: true. - An element screenshot fails or is empty: verify that the selector identifies the intended element after navigation and that the page has rendered it before capture.
- A hosted request fails or exposes credentials: use HTTPS for requests carrying API keys, authorization headers, or cookies. ScreenshotOne explicitly warns that HTTP traffic is not encrypted.
- A self-hosted endpoint is unsuitable for deployment: a documented quick start does not establish production reliability, capacity, or current maintenance. Review the repository, deployment environment, and operational requirements before exposing the service.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
The cited project and vendor documentation describes capabilities and setup, but does not provide comparable benchmark results for capture speed, reliability, or image quality. Browser rendering time can depend on the destination page and the capture conditions; no source here establishes a latency guarantee.
Self-hosting means your team installs and operates the browser and service. A hosted API avoids that browser infrastructure work but is a vendor service. For ShotAPI, the README’s “Coming Soon” pricing language means a dependable price comparison cannot be made from its displayed plan table. ScreenshotNeo’s stated plans are Free for 1,000 shots per month, Starter $5 for 3,000, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000, and Business $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I save a Playwright screenshot to memory instead of a file?
Yes. Playwright’s screenshot method can return a buffer for later processing.
Is ShotAPI’s plan table a confirmed price list?
No. The repository README labels pricing “Coming Soon,” so its displayed plan prices are not verified commercial pricing.
