Peter A. Jansen’s Open Source Science Tricorder Cyberdeck is presented as a practical handheld science instrument, not a screen-accurate Star Trek prop. Hackaday’s Tyler August reports that it combines radiation spectroscopy, visible-light analysis, thermal imaging, magnetic sensing and environmental measurements in a ClockworkPi uConsole powered by a Compute Module 5.

What the Open Source Science Tricorder Cyberdeck does

Hackaday’s September 30, 2026 report describes a collection of sensing tools rather than a device that reproduces the fictional tricorder’s capabilities. The reported functions include:

  • A scintillation crystal for spectroscopic analysis of beta- or gamma-ray sources.
  • A visible-light spectrometer.
  • A thermal camera.
  • A magnetic-field camera and a standard magnetometer.
  • Environmental measurements for temperature, pressure and humidity.
  • Measurements of particulate matter, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbon dioxide concentration.

August characterizes the design as more usable than the fictional inspiration, writing, “Frankly, it looks more usable than Roddenberry’s version.” That is the reporter’s opinion, not a performance finding.

How the cyberdeck is built

The report identifies the ClockworkPi uConsole as the host platform and a Compute Module 5 as the processing hardware. August describes the uConsole as taking care of the form factor. Hackaday says the project’s GitHub repository contains build details and videos of assembly and operation.

The report does not establish the repository’s exact URL, a complete bill of materials, sensor models, calibration procedure or performance specifications. Those details should be checked against the project’s current repository before relying on them for a build or buying components.

What the reported capabilities do—and do not—establish

A list of sensor types is not the same as validated measurement performance. The Hackaday report supplies no calibration data, accuracy figures, detection limits or safety validation. It therefore does not establish how precise the readings are, what ranges the sensors cover, or whether the device is suitable for decisions that require calibrated laboratory or safety equipment.

Jansen has worked toward a practical tricorder for more than a decade, according to Hackaday, though the report does not provide a dated development timeline for that claim. It also mentions Jansen’s earlier Arducorder and contrasts the cyberdeck’s scientific-utility emphasis with tricorder-inspired projects that often prioritize screen accuracy. That comparison is the reporter’s qualitative characterization, not a formal survey of those projects.
