The best open-source proxy server depends on the job: choose Squid for forward proxying with caching and policy controls, NGINX for a broad web and network edge, HAProxy for load balancing, Tinyproxy for lightweight HTTP/SSL forwarding, and Privoxy for filtering and privacy controls. They are not interchangeable, and the administrator still has to configure access, logging, updates, and failure behavior safely.
Choose by proxy role, not by popularity
A forward proxy handles requests from clients on their way to other services; a reverse proxy sits in front of servers and handles incoming requests. A filtering proxy modifies or blocks content or headers. A load balancer distributes connections or requests among backend servers. Some projects cover multiple roles, but each has a different center of gravity.
That difference explains the rough edges: configuration models, traffic scope, and built-in features vary substantially. A capable project can still be the wrong fit if it solves a broader or narrower problem than the one you have.

When Squid is the right choice
Choose Squid when clients need a forward proxy and you want caching alongside granular policy and customization. It is also documented as a reverse proxy for caching frequently accessed static content in front of a web-server farm. Its flexibility is useful when rules matter, but that flexibility also means administrators must understand and maintain the policy they configure.

For a deployment whose primary requirement is balancing connections across application servers, Squid is usually the wrong starting point. HAProxy is oriented around that work; NGINX can also combine load balancing with web serving and other edge functions.
When NGINX is the right choice
NGINX Open Source is a strong fit when proxying is one part of a web-edge role: for example, serving a site, terminating TLS, routing requests to applications, or delivering static content. Its documented scope includes HTTP, TCP/UDP, and mail proxying, so it is the broadest general-purpose edge option among these five.

That breadth should not be mistaken for a promise that every deployment enables every protocol or feature out of the box. Confirm the needed capability in the project documentation for the version and build you plan to deploy, then configure and test it explicitly.
When HAProxy is the right choice
Choose HAProxy when availability and traffic distribution are the main job. Its documentation positions it as an HTTP reverse proxy and high-availability load balancer for TCP and HTTP applications. Health checks and failover help direct traffic according to backend condition, while connection-level control suits application traffic management.

If the actual requirement is caching, filtering page content, or a simple client-side forwarding proxy, start with the project built for that role rather than treating HAProxy as a universal substitute.
When Tinyproxy or Privoxy is the right choice
Tinyproxy for a smaller forwarding service
Tinyproxy is a pragmatic lightweight HTTP/SSL proxy for small networks where a larger platform may be unnecessarily resource-intensive or add avoidable operational scope. The project describes running it without special privileges as possible when ownership is appropriate and it listens on a port above 1024. That reduces the potential impact of compromise; it does not replace access restrictions, updates, or network isolation.

Privoxy for filtering rather than caching
Privoxy is a non-caching web proxy focused on privacy and content controls. It can modify HTTP headers and page data, restrict access, and filter unwanted content such as ads. The cited manual is for release 4.2.0; check the project’s current release documentation before relying on a particular setting or behavior. If the design also needs caching or broader traffic management, pair Privoxy with a proxy chosen for that additional role.

- Squid: pick it for forward proxying, caching, and detailed access policy.
- NGINX: pick it for a versatile web edge that may combine reverse proxying, TLS, serving content, and TCP/UDP proxying.
- HAProxy: pick it when load distribution, backend health, failover, and connection handling dominate.
There is no universal performance winner established by the project documentation. Throughput depends on workload, configuration, hardware, and network conditions; capability descriptions are not comparable benchmarks.
Make the deployment safe and maintainable
A proxy exposed to untrusted networks can become an open proxy if access is not restricted. That can expose the operator to abuse and put the proxy’s network in harm’s way. Treat access policy and operations as part of the design, not as post-installation polish.
- Define who may use it. Start with a deny-by-default policy and allow only intended client addresses or networks. Add authentication where appropriate, but do not rely on authentication alone if network-level restrictions are available.
- Bind deliberately. Listen only on the interfaces needed for the role. Keep a client-facing forward proxy off public interfaces unless public access is an explicit, tightly controlled requirement.
- Separate network roles. Use network segmentation and firewall rules so clients can reach the proxy, while the proxy can reach only the destinations and backends its job requires.
- Plan visibility. Enable and protect logs that help diagnose access decisions, backend health, and errors. Decide retention and access rules for logs because proxy records can reveal browsing or application activity.
- Test failures and recovery. For a load balancer, verify health-check and failover behavior. For a cache or filtering proxy, test expected behavior when upstream services fail and when rules change.
- Maintain the system. Track project releases, apply security updates, review configuration changes, and document how to restore a known-good configuration.
These controls are useful regardless of which project you choose. Tinyproxy’s ability to run without special privileges can reduce one class of risk, but no daemon becomes safe merely by being small or open source.
