Elektrobit’s EB corbos is a family of automotive software building blocks, not a single Linux image. Its open-source Linux distribution is built on Ubuntu and tailored for embedded automotive use; a separate extension, EB corbos Linux for Safety Applications, adds hypervisor-based monitoring and is the product Elektrobit says received a positive safety assessment as a Safety Element out of Context (SEooC). A free SDK is available for prototyping, while production use is a separate offer with support and project-specific terms.
What is EB corbos?
Elektrobit positions EB corbos as a set of software building blocks for automotive high-performance computing and software-defined vehicle development. The family page describes three products:
- EB corbos Linux: an open-source operating system for automotive applications.
- EB corbos AdaptiveCore: Adaptive AUTOSAR middleware.
- EB corbos Link: middleware for connecting Android applications to automotive electronic control units (ECUs).
These are Elektrobit’s product descriptions, not a claim that the components form one mandatory stack. Elektrobit’s EB corbos family overview lists them as distinct building blocks.
What makes EB corbos Linux different from a general Ubuntu installation?
Elektrobit and Canonical announced EB corbos Linux, built on Ubuntu, on February 21, 2023. The Ubuntu foundation provides the distribution’s starting point; Elektrobit describes additional components aimed at automotive embedded environments. Canonical’s announcement of the collaboration dates that foundation.

- Rupdate: a modular, Rust-based over-the-air (OTA) update mechanism.
Elektrobit also says it participates in the Linux Foundation’s ELISA and Automotive Grade Linux projects, and that it made its safety Linux available within Eclipse S-CORE for integration and evaluation. Those statements do not mean every named component shares the same license, governance, or maintenance model. For the vendor’s descriptions, see its open-source software overview.
What does “for Safety Applications” add?
EB corbos Linux for Safety Applications is a distinct extension of EB corbos Linux, also built on Ubuntu. Elektrobit describes an external monitoring component hosted in a hypervisor environment that intercepts and validates kernel actions. The product page presents it as meeting ASIL B and SIL 2 safety requirements. Elektrobit’s wording is: “EB corbos Linux for Safety Applications brings safety monitoring to an advanced level.” That statement and the product description are on Elektrobit’s product page.

- Altera Cyclone IV FPGA includes 6,000 Logic Elements with two clock multipliers. The Cyclone IV FPGA is the perfect balance of inexpensive cost versus plentiful logic cells, 20KBytes of SRAM, and General Purpose Input/Output pins. This is a great board to learn how to program FPGA's.
- Built in programmer cable allows configuring the FPGA with a single USB-C cable. The DPL can be powered from the USB cable or from the Barrel Connector. A separate JTAG header can also be used to program the FPGA using a compatible USB Blaster cable.
- 6x6 LED Array allows character and animations to be displayed at ultra fast speed. LED blocks can be individually turned on/off to allow LED signals to be used as I/O's
- 70 Inputs/Outputs originating at the FPGA are available at Stackable Headers organized around the edge of the board. The user can configure these I/O's using the FPGA project code.
- The DPL contains two oscillators, 66MHz and 100MHz. The 66MHz oscillator is used to provide clocking for the EPT ActiveHost USB communications core. The 100MHz oscillator can be used by the user clocked up using one of the onboard Clock-DLL modules.
What the SEooC assessment means
In an announcement dated April 23, 2024, Elektrobit said the product had received a positive TÜV Nord technical assessment as a Safety Element out of Context (SEooC), based on ISO 26262 ASIL B and IEC 61508 SIL 2. This is the vendor’s report of an assessment of the product in that defined context. It is not evidence that the Linux kernel alone has been certified, nor does it automatically establish that a customer’s complete vehicle system meets a safety standard. System-level safety analysis and integration remain part of the vehicle project.
The underlying assessment report is not available in the cited announcement, so readers evaluating a safety case should request the applicable assessment documentation and confirm its scope with Elektrobit. The announcement is available at Elektrobit’s April 2024 release.

Open source, vendor support, and safety are different questions
“Open source” describes aspects of the software and its development or licensing; it does not by itself mean a product is qualified for a production vehicle, maintained for a particular period, or covered by a supplier’s support and liability terms. Conversely, a vendor’s safety-related assessment does not make every upstream or community component independently certified.
For a project decision, separate the questions:
- Software and licensing: identify the licenses, repositories, and contribution arrangements for the exact components you plan to use.
- Safety scope: establish which product configuration and safety functions are covered by the assessment, and how they fit into your system safety case.
- Production readiness: confirm supported hardware, updates, defect and vulnerability handling, maintenance, warranty, and engineering support in the actual offer.
- Integration responsibility: define who will validate the complete ECU and vehicle system, including interactions with other software and hardware.
Free prototype SDK versus production-grade use
Elektrobit labels its free SDK as suitable for prototyping and not for mass production. The download edition is described as including a basic QEMU image, EB corbos Hypervisor packages, and getting-started and developer guides; access requests are reviewed by Elektrobit’s export-control team. The company also describes an AWS cloud edition, for which an AWS account is needed. These are access-page descriptions and can change; consult Elektrobit’s free-access page for current availability and steps.

How to assess fit for an automotive project
- Decide whether the need is a Linux base or a safety-oriented extension. General EB corbos Linux and EB corbos Linux for Safety Applications are not interchangeable descriptions; establish which capabilities and safety scope the project needs.
- Prototype with the right expectations. The free SDK can support evaluation and early development, but its stated restriction rules it out as a production entitlement.
- Map the safety case. Treat the announced SEooC assessment as a scoped product assessment. Ask for applicable evidence, identify integration assumptions, and plan for system-level validation.
- Confirm project fit and support. Verify target hardware, software versions, updates, maintenance commitments, deliverables, and contractual terms with Elektrobit rather than assuming they follow automatically from the free SDK or the open-source foundation.
Maintenance and newer ecosystem context
Elektrobit’s 2024 announcement states “up to 15 years of maintenance.” That is a vendor-stated maximum, not a universal commitment for every configuration or customer; applicability depends on the specific product and commercial agreement.
