For teams that prefer to assemble and reuse visual workflows, start with ComfyUI. These tools solve different parts of the problem: they provide ways to run and connect models, but they do not determine whether a particular model is licensed for your use, how much hardware it needs, or whether it will meet your quality and speed requirements. Choose the model and deployment setup as deliberately as you choose the tool.
Which image generation tool fits your development workflow?
Diffusers is a Python library for developers who want to load pretrained diffusion pipelines and build inference into code. ComfyUI is a node-graph application for authoring and reusing workflows, with a local API for integrating those workflows into applications. Both support image-generation workflows; neither makes the other’s approach obsolete.

There is no supported quality or throughput ranking here: the cited project and vendor materials do not provide a consistent comparative benchmark. A model that produces a desirable result in one workflow is not automatically faster, better, or cheaper in another environment.
How to start with Diffusers in Python
Use Diffusers when your application should own the inference flow—for example, when you need to call generation from Python code or change how the pipeline is assembled. The project documents installation through pip or Conda and loading a pretrained pipeline with DiffusionPipeline.from_pretrained. Its quick-start pattern selects a PyTorch data type, moves the pipeline to CUDA, and calls it with a prompt.

Load a pretrained pipeline
The model repository is a required choice, not a universal default. Set MODEL_ID to the exact model repository you have selected, after reviewing its instructions and license. This example follows the documented loading pattern; the model, supported data type, dependencies, and hardware must agree.

The example assumes CUDA; it is not a general CPU or Apple-silicon recipe. The documentation and repository setup details can change, so check them when implementing rather than treating an old environment as a permanent specification.

When to build more than a single pipeline call
Diffusers also supports direct construction using model and scheduler components. That is the route to investigate when a pretrained pipeline does not match the structure your application needs. It gives you more control, but also means you must understand and configure the components correctly. Do not assume every checkpoint can be substituted into every pipeline unchanged.
How to start with ComfyUI
Choose ComfyUI when it helps to see the generation process as connected nodes, save workflows for reuse, or let an application invoke a locally running workflow. Its documented basic local route is to install the project’s dependencies and run python main.py; then build or load a graph. For an application integration, use its documented local API rather than trying to treat the visual interface as the integration contract.

- Review the official ComfyUI repository for current installation requirements and the models you intend to run.
- Install the required dependencies for your operating system and Python environment.
- Start the application with
python main.py. - Build or load a graph workflow, then check that its model files and any required components are available to the environment.
- For repeated or application-driven generation, save and reuse the workflow and integrate through the documented local API.
ComfyUI’s workflow format, supported models, and local integration can be useful where generation is a sequence of visible steps rather than a single library call. It also supports model offloading and quantized models, but those options are not a guarantee that every large model will run acceptably on a given machine.
Choose the model separately from the interface
A tool’s ability to load or represent a model is not the same as permission to use that model. Before selecting a checkpoint, inspect its own repository and license for the use you plan to make of it: personal experimentation, commercial deployment, research, redistribution, or another use may be treated differently. Keep a record of the exact model and terms you approved; a workflow can later be changed to use a different checkpoint with different conditions.

Stability AI’s current license guidance describes its Core Models as available under a Community License for individuals and organizations with annual revenue below USD $1 million, including commercial use, subject to the license’s conditions. The same guidance says commercial research using a Core Model or derivative must be registered, and that an Enterprise License may be required above the revenue threshold. Those statements concern Stability AI Core Models only. They do not establish terms for other model publishers or every model accessible in Diffusers or ComfyUI. Check the current license for the particular model and intended use before shipping.
Estimate hardware needs without treating one model’s guidance as universal
Hardware requirements depend on the model, image settings, workflow, and optimization choices. Stability AI’s self-hosting guide gives an NVIDIA GPU with at least 6 GB of VRAM as a baseline for its general Stable Diffusion setup and recommends an RTX 3060 or higher. It also lists Windows, macOS with an M-series chip, or Linux, and Python 3.10 or later. These are that vendor guide’s recommendations, not minimum requirements for every image-generation model or current software stack.

Flux documentation warns that its family of text-to-image diffusion transformer models can be expensive to run on consumer hardware. It points to memory optimizations and quantization; quantization trades memory use against inference latency. In practice, check the chosen model’s own documentation and test the exact workflow on the target environment before committing to a deployment size. Do not infer a model’s output quality or generation speed from VRAM figures alone.

The right choice depends on how much control and operational responsibility you want, whether offline use matters, and what your workload costs under the provider’s current terms. A local setup is not automatically cheaper for a team that must buy, maintain, and operate hardware; hosted inference is not automatically simpler if your application needs special model or workflow control.
Common implementation problems and how to diagnose them
- The pipeline will not load: confirm that the model repository identifier is correct, the selected model is compatible with the pipeline, and the installed dependencies match current project requirements.
- CUDA initialization or device movement fails: the example uses
pipe.to("cuda"), so it requires a compatible CUDA environment. Check your device and installed framework setup; do not expect that line to select a CPU or Apple M-series configuration. - The run exceeds available memory or is impractically slow: revisit the model choice and its requirements. For Flux, consult its memory optimization and quantization guidance, bearing in mind the stated memory-versus-latency trade-off. ComfyUI also documents offloading and quantized-model support, but compatibility and outcomes depend on the model and machine.
- A ComfyUI workflow cannot find a model or component: inspect the graph’s dependencies and ensure the required files and components are available to the environment. Model support in the project does not mean a particular model is already installed.
- A chosen model is unsuitable for release: re-check that exact checkpoint’s license and the intended use. A library or UI’s ability to run it does not grant usage rights.
- A hosted route costs more or behaves differently than expected: verify the provider’s current pricing, limits, and service terms before deployment; the vendor examples alone do not establish those details.

A practical decision checklist
- Choose Diffusers if your application should call a Python pipeline directly or you need code-first control.
- Choose ComfyUI if graph authoring, reusable workflows, or a local workflow API better fits how your team builds.
- Treat PotionUI as experimental while its project describes itself as alpha.
- Pick a specific model only after checking its own license, runtime requirements, and compatibility with the chosen tool.
- Decide between local, cloud GPU, and hosted inference based on control and operational burden, then verify present-day costs and terms with the relevant provider.
