Its OpenVINO plugins document local noise suppression, stem separation, music generation and continuation, Whisper transcription, and audio super resolution. But Audacity’s plugin download page currently warns that the plugins are not compatible with the latest Audacity version, so check that notice before updating or installing. For multitrack recording, mixing, routing, and broader production work, Ardour is the stronger fit; its reviewed official materials do not document a comparable built-in AI feature set.
Which open-source audio editor fits your workflow?
| Your priority | Best-supported fit | Why | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI-assisted transcription, noise suppression, or stem separation | Audacity with its OpenVINO plugins | Audacity’s plugin documentation lists these functions and says supported AI processing runs locally. | Plugin compatibility with your Audacity version, operating system, and available system resources. |
| Multitrack recording, mixing, routing, or soundtrack production | Ardour | Its official materials describe recording, editing, mixing, mastering, extensive routing, plugin support, video timeline work, and scripting. | Hardware setup, plugin compatibility, and the needs of your recording session. |
| Basic edits to existing audio files | Either, depending on project complexity | Both projects document audio-editing capabilities; the official sources reviewed do not provide comparative usability testing. | Whether you need a simple edit or a full multitrack production environment. |
The key distinction is not simply “AI editor versus non-AI editor.” It is whether you need a specific AI task, whether that task is built into the editor or depends on a plugin, whether it runs locally, and whether your project calls for detailed multitrack production. Audacity’s OpenVINO plugin page is the place to check its current AI-plugin availability and compatibility; Ardour’s project site and features page describe its production tools.
What AI workflows does Audacity document?
Audacity’s OpenVINO plugin documentation lists five AI-assisted workflows. They are plugin-based features, so their availability depends on the plugin and Audacity version working together.
- Music stem separation: separate a track into drums, bass, vocals, and other instruments.
- Noise suppression: reduce noise; Audacity’s page says the feature works best on spoken-word audio.
- Music generation and continuation: generate music or continue existing music using the documented plugin workflow.
- Whisper transcription: transcribe or translate a selection of spoken audio or vocals into a label track. The resulting label track can be exported as subtitles.
- Audio super resolution: upsample audio.
These are specific documented capabilities, not a claim that every Audacity effect or third-party plugin uses AI. See Audacity’s OpenVINO plugin page for the feature list and current download notice.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Local processing and connectivity
Audacity’s OpenVINO documentation says these AI features run locally on supported CPU, GPU, or NPU accelerators and do not require an internet connection. The Whisper workflow uses whisper.cpp to create a label track from a selected passage. Treat the local-processing statement as specific to the documented OpenVINO features; it should not be generalized to unrelated plugins, services, or workflows. Details are in the OpenVINO plugin documentation.
Check compatibility before updating
The current AI-plugin download page warns that the OpenVINO plugins are not yet compatible with the latest Audacity version. Audacity’s homepage displayed version 4.0.1 as its latest release when checked on October 5, 2026. That makes version compatibility a practical prerequisite: verify the live notice before installing the plugins or updating Audacity. The homepage is audacityteam.org.

Older macOS instructions should not be read as current universal guidance. Audacity’s announcement dated June 11, 2025 described a first macOS release as a beta of sorts, with installation using Audacity 3.7.4 and a model downloader and installer supporting macOS 12 and later. Those details apply to that dated release, not necessarily to the current Audacity version. See Audacity’s AI-features support page for that announcement and related guidance.

Those capabilities make Ardour a natural candidate for complex sessions and configurable production workflows. They do not establish that Ardour includes AI tools comparable to Audacity’s documented OpenVINO features: the Ardour pages reviewed describe its editing, plugin, and scripting capabilities, but do not document a comparable built-in AI feature set. For details, see Ardour’s official site and its features page.
Recording hardware and editing existing files
An audio interface can matter when connecting recording inputs and outputs, and Ardour lists the interface as a constraint on sample rate. It is not a prerequisite merely to edit existing audio files. For recording, check how your hardware connects to your computer and whether it works with your intended setup; for file editing or Audacity’s documented local AI effects, do not assume you need to buy an interface. Ardour’s setup information is at ardour.org.

How to choose without confusing plugin support with AI support
- Name the task. If you need transcription, stem separation, noise suppression, generation, continuation, or super resolution, compare those exact tasks against Audacity’s documented OpenVINO features.
- Confirm the workflow and version. Check whether the feature is supplied by a plugin, whether that plugin works with your Audacity version, and whether your operating system and hardware meet the plugin’s requirements.
- Decide whether local processing matters. The no-internet, local-execution statement applies to the documented OpenVINO features on supported hardware, not to every extension or service.
- Match the editor to the session. Choose Ardour when multitrack recording, routing, mixing, mastering, video soundtrack work, or Lua scripting is central. Choose between either editor for basic file edits based on the session’s complexity and your own workflow; the available official material does not establish which is easier or faster.
