Put Open Graph tags in your page’s <head> to control the title, type, image and canonical URL used when a page is represented in an Open Graph preview. The four foundational properties are og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. Add og:description and og:site_name for a more useful preview, then validate the deployed HTML with the destination platform’s current debugger.

Copy-and-paste Open Graph example

Replace every sample value with information about the actual page. Keep these elements inside the document’s <head>; putting them in the body can prevent a crawler from reading them as intended.

<html prefix="og: https://ogp.me/ns#">
<head>
  <title>Example page</title>
  <meta property="og:title" content="Example page" />
  <meta property="og:type" content="website" />
  <meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/page/" />
  <meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/share-card.jpg" />
  <meta property="og:description" content="A concise description of this page." />
  <meta property="og:site_name" content="Example site" />
</head>
<body>
  ...
</body>
</html>

The protocol’s canonical syntax uses property and content attributes. The prefix declaration identifies the Open Graph vocabulary; retain it when using the protocol example above.

What each Open Graph property does

Property Purpose What to enter
og:title The title shown for the object. A page-specific headline, normally concise enough for a link card.
og:type Identifies the kind of object. website is a sensible starting value for an ordinary site page; use a specialized type only when it accurately describes the object and you can provide that type’s required properties.
og:image Supplies the image representing the object. An absolute, publicly reachable image URL.
og:url Defines the object’s permanent graph identity. The intended canonical page URL, not a tracking or campaign variant.
og:description Provides an optional one- or two-sentence description. A factual summary of the page.
og:site_name Names the larger site to which the object belongs. Your site or publication name.

Choosing the title, type and canonical URL

Make og:title describe this URL

Use the title a visitor should associate with the page, rather than a generic site name or an internal database label. It can differ from the HTML <title>, but keeping the two aligned avoids confusing previews and browser tabs. Do not leave the sample text “Example page” in production markup.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use the least-specific accurate og:type

website works as the protocol’s simple example for a normal page. A specialized object type is appropriate only when the page really represents that object and includes any additional properties the type requires. Choosing a type merely because it sounds more descriptive can make the metadata inaccurate.

Set og:url to the canonical page

The protocol treats og:url as the object’s permanent graph ID. Use the stable, canonical URL that you want platforms to associate with shares. Exclude analytics parameters, temporary campaign tokens and alternate tracking URLs. If several URL variants show the same content, point their Open Graph metadata at the one canonical address.

Declare one image

A single root declaration is enough for a page with one preferred preview image:

Add structured image properties in groups

The protocol allows structured details such as width, height and MIME type. Place each structured property immediately after the corresponding root image declaration:

<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/card-one.jpg" />
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200" />
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630" />

The values above illustrate markup; they are not a universal platform-size requirement. Add only dimensions or MIME details you know to be correct.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Offer more than one image

Repeat og:image when you have multiple acceptable images. A new root declaration starts a new image entry; the structured properties that follow belong to that entry:

<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/card-one.jpg" />
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200" />
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630" />
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/card-two.jpg" />

When values conflict, the first declaration from top to bottom is preferred. Put your primary image first, then its structured properties, before declaring the fallback image.

Optional locale and media properties

og:locale and og:locale:alternate can declare the page’s locale and alternatives. The protocol presents language-territory values such as en_US:

Implementing tags in a site or framework

  1. Identify the canonical route. Decide the public URL that represents the page after redirects, localization and tracking parameters are removed.
  2. Collect page-specific values. Prepare the title, description, type, image URL and site name from the page’s content model rather than copying one constant string to every route.
  3. Render metadata in the initial head. Server-rendered HTML is the safest place to expose the tags. If a framework changes head contents client-side, inspect the final HTML delivered to a crawler and verify that the expected values are present.
  4. Use absolute URLs. Write complete https:// addresses for og:url, og:image, og:audio and og:video.
  5. Deploy, then validate. Preview the deployed page, not only a local development URL, because crawlers must be able to retrieve the same HTML and assets.

Protocol-level correctness does not guarantee an identical card on every social network. Platforms can apply their own parsers, caches and display rules, and the available documentation does not establish one universal behavior across all networks. Test on each platform where the link will actually be shared.

Troubleshooting common preview problems

The old title or image still appears

  • Confirm that the deployed response contains the new tags in the <head>, not only in a client-side view.
  • Check the target platform’s current debugger or preview tool and request a fresh parse when that workflow provides one.
  • Make sure a duplicate declaration earlier in the document is not winning because the first value is preferred.

The preview uses the wrong page identity

  • Inspect og:url for tracking parameters, a staging hostname or a non-canonical redirect target.
  • Set every route variant to the intended canonical URL and keep that value stable.

No image is displayed

  • Verify that og:image is an absolute URL to the image asset and that the asset is reachable without a login or interaction.
  • Check that the root declaration appears before its structured properties and before any fallback image.
  • Confirm that the crawler receives the same response as an ordinary public request; a blocked, timed-out or blank response cannot produce a reliable card.

The wrong image is selected

Move the preferred og:image declaration above alternatives. The protocol’s ordering rule makes the first value the preferred one when values conflict.

A specialized type causes inconsistent results

Return to website unless the specialized type is genuinely accurate and all properties required by that type are supplied. An inaccurate type is worse than a simple, correct one.

Pre-launch checklist

  • All four basic properties—og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url—are present in the head.
  • The title and description describe this specific page.
  • og:type accurately identifies the object.
  • og:url is the stable canonical URL without campaign parameters.
  • The primary image is declared first, with its structured details directly below it when used.
  • Optional locale or media properties point to real values and assets.
  • The deployed HTML, not just source templates, contains the expected tags.
  • The page has been checked with the destination platform’s current parser or preview workflow.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need to inspect how a deployed page renders before checking a social preview, ScreenshotNeo can capture it with one HTTP request. It accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the capture; bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/page/ -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com/page/"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/page/' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to begin.

The Bottom Line

Start with the four required Open Graph properties in the page head, use a canonical og:url, put your preferred image first, and validate the deployed page on every platform where it will be shared.
