An Open Graph (OG) image tester checks the metadata and image that social networks use for a link preview. Paste a publicly reachable page URL into a tester; it fetches the HTML, resolves og:image, measures the file, checks crawler access and HTTPS, and shows predicted cards for services such as Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Discord, WhatsApp, Slack and Telegram. Use the workflow below to find a bad tag, an inaccessible image or a stale platform cache.
What an Open Graph image tester checks
A tester is a URL-based diagnostic, not an image editor. It requests your page as a crawler, parses the response, follows the image URL and reports what a platform is likely to receive. OpenGraph.to documents checks for og:title, og:description, og:image, dimensions, HTTPS and alt text, with previews for several major platforms. MyOG.social reports the resolved image URL, dimensions, file size, Twitter/X fallback and crawler-blocking problems.
- HTML metadata: whether the required properties exist, are duplicated or contain empty values.
- Image resolution: the final URL, HTTP response, pixel dimensions and file size of the referenced image.
- Access: HTTPS, redirects, robots or firewall behavior and whether a social crawler can download the file.
- Platform interpretation: a rendered approximation of each network’s card and any Twitter Card fallback.
A green result means the fetch succeeded under that tester’s conditions; it cannot guarantee every network will display an identical crop or cache state.
Metadata to put on every shareable page
Use absolute HTTPS URLs and keep one canonical set of values in the document’s <head>. The practical minimum is:

Image dimensions, format and composition
Start at 1200×630 pixels (1.91:1). OpenGraph.io’s 2026 guidance and other current guides cite this as a practical cross-platform baseline. It is guidance rather than a permanent platform contract, so verify the current requirements of the networks that matter to you.
- Keep important text and logos away from the edges; networks can crop cards differently.
- Serve the exact dimensions declared in
og:image:widthandog:image:height, or omit those declarations until they are accurate. - Confirm the image returns a successful response, has a sensible file size and is delivered over HTTPS.
- Use a stable URL for a stable asset. When you replace artwork, changing the image URL is often the simplest way to distinguish the new resource from a cached one.
How to test an OG image, step by step
- Publish first. Make the page publicly reachable without a login, VPN or browser-only JavaScript. Put the OG elements in the initial HTML response.
- Run a multi-platform tester. Paste the complete page URL into a service such as OpenGraph.to or MyOG.social. Record the extracted tags, resolved image URL, dimensions, file size and every access warning.
- Inspect the source yourself. View the server response, not only the DOM after scripts run. Search for
og:title,og:description,og:imageandog:url; remove conflicting duplicate tags generated by a theme and a plugin. - Check the asset directly. Open the resolved image URL in a private browser window and request it without cookies. A redirect to a login page, an HTML error document or a blocked user agent is a failure even if the URL looks correct.
- Review the visual card. Compare the 1200×630 composition with each preview. Check title truncation, dark or light backgrounds and whether a platform has selected a different image.
- Force a re-scrape when necessary. Submit the URL to Facebook’s Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn’s Post Inspector. These native tools trigger a fresh crawl; run your multi-platform tester again afterward.
Why an og:image is missing or wrong
The tag is absent from the crawler response
Server-side templates, SEO plugins and client-rendered frameworks can emit metadata only after JavaScript executes. Social crawlers may not run that code. Render the tags in the initial HTML response and verify the production URL rather than a staging page.

The image URL is relative, redirected or non-HTTPS
Change values such as /images/card.png to an absolute HTTPS URL. Follow redirects and ensure the final host is also reachable over HTTPS. A tester’s resolved URL is the one to troubleshoot, not merely the value typed in your template.

A firewall, robots rule or bot check blocks the crawler
CDNs and security products may challenge Facebook, LinkedIn or other user agents. Allow legitimate social crawlers to fetch the page and image, while keeping normal security controls for other traffic. Test from outside your office network and without an authentication cookie.
The wrong image wins
Multiple og:image tags, a plugin override or an X-specific image can change the selected asset. Keep one deliberate OG image per page, place it in the head and inspect the tester’s “resolved image” result. X’s card type still controls layout even when it falls back to OG image data.

The preview is old after a fix
Facebook and LinkedIn cache earlier crawls. Use their Sharing Debugger or Post Inspector to request a re-scrape, then test again. Discord, Slack, WhatsApp and other clients maintain their own caches and fallback rules, so one refreshed platform does not refresh all of them. Re-testing after changing the image URL or metadata confirms which version is being fetched.
Choosing an OG tester
Do not choose solely by whether a service draws a nice card. Compare the diagnostic depth that matches your failure mode:

- Return OG tags in the first HTML response.
- Use one absolute HTTPS image URL and verify its final response.
- Start with a 1200×630 image and protect text from edge crops.
- Declare accurate dimensions and an explicit X card type.
- Run a tester after publishing and after every metadata or image change.
- Use Facebook Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn Post Inspector for stale previews.
- Check at least one messaging client because its cache and fallback rules may differ.
- Keep a record of the resolved URL and crawler errors for regressions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I test a page that is behind a login?
No. An OG tester fetches the public URL as a crawler. Publish a publicly reachable version or use a temporary public environment; do not expose private content merely to create a preview.
Do OG testers validate the image’s accessibility to every social network?
They test under their own fetch conditions and can reveal common crawler and HTTP failures, but each platform can use different user agents, caches and policies. Confirm critical pages with the native debugger for that platform.
Should every page use the same OG image?
No. A site-wide default is useful as a fallback, but page-specific images communicate the content better. Ensure the page’s intended image is the only selected og:image value.
