For a practical Open Graph image, start with a 1200 × 630-pixel canvas, about a 1.91:1 aspect ratio. It is a useful cross-platform default, not a universal rule: platforms can impose different minimums, file limits, crops, and crawler behavior. For LinkedIn specifically, its Help page specifies a minimum of 1200 × 627 pixels, recommends a 1.91:1 ratio, and sets a 5 MB maximum.
Declare the image in your page’s HTML with og:image, use an absolute URL that sharing crawlers can fetch, and keep essential text and logos away from the edges. Then validate the page on the platform where it will be shared.
What size should an Open Graph image be?
Use 1200 × 630 pixels as a general-purpose starting canvas. Its ratio is approximately 1.905:1, commonly rounded to 1.91:1. The OG Image Design size guide, updated July 2026, recommends this size for broad use; it is guidance rather than a rule defined by the Open Graph protocol.
The protocol specifies metadata fields, not one mandatory image size for every service. A particular platform may resize or crop the image, apply its own file-size limit, or use different preview behavior. Treat the dimensions below according to their source and scope:

| Use | Dimensions or ratio | What the guidance establishes |
|---|---|---|
| General Open Graph starting canvas | 1200 × 630 px; about 1.91:1 | Cross-platform recommendation from the OG Image Design guide, updated July 2026; not a universal platform mandate. |
| LinkedIn sharing | Minimum 1200 × 627 px; recommended 1.91:1 | LinkedIn Help also specifies a 5 MB maximum. These are LinkedIn’s stated requirements, not a guarantee about other services. |
| X large image card | 1200 × 630 px is listed in the secondary guide; the guide notes a 2:1 card may crop a 1.91:1 source | Secondary guidance only. The official X documentation reviewed for this topic did not establish this precise sizing claim. |
| Facebook, Slack, Discord, iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram | 1200 × 630 px is listed as a general recommendation | Secondary guidance. Current limits, crops, and fetch behavior can vary by platform and client. |
The values in the broad-use rows come from the OG Image Design guide. LinkedIn’s figures come from its sharing guidance, whose page says it was last updated two years before access. Check the target platform’s own current documentation if a strict limit matters.
What Open Graph tags should the page include?
Open Graph metadata goes in the document’s <head>. The protocol’s basic example uses og:title, og:type, og:url, and og:image. For a share preview, include the page title, canonical page URL, a description, and the image. LinkedIn’s Help page specifically says pages should include og:title, og:image, og:description, and og:url.
Here is a minimal example with image dimensions and descriptive alternative text. Replace the example values with the real page and a publicly accessible image URL:
<head>
<meta property="og:title" content="A useful page title">
<meta property="og:type" content="website">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/article">
<meta property="og:description" content="A concise description of the page.">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/article-og.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
<meta property="og:image:type" content="image/jpeg">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="A person reviewing a chart on a laptop">
</head>
The dimensions describe the actual image file in pixels; they do not resize it. Keep the declared MIME type consistent with the asset. The protocol lists og:image:url as equivalent to og:image, and also defines og:image:secure_url as an alternate URL for a page that requires HTTPS. Use the ordinary og:image URL unless you have a specific reason to supply the additional property.

Use a real absolute image URL
Provide the complete deployed URL rather than a relative path such as /images/share.jpg. The sharing crawler must be able to retrieve the image from the URL you declare. Confirm it resolves publicly, returns the intended file, and is not blocked by access controls or a crawler restriction. An image visible to a logged-in site editor may still be unavailable to a social preview crawler.
Describe the image with alt text
The Open Graph protocol says a page specifying og:image should also specify og:image:alt. Make the value a concise description of the image’s content, not a caption or a string of keywords. If the image contains important text, the description can convey its meaning without merely copying every word printed on the graphic.
Keep image properties with their image
The protocol allows multiple og:image values. If values conflict, it gives preference to the first one. Put each image’s structured properties—such as width, height, type, and alt—after the root og:image they describe. A later root image starts another image entry, so do not put one image’s dimensions after a different image’s tag.
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/primary.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="The primary image description">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/alternate.png">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="The alternate image description">
Only add multiple images when you intend to offer alternatives and understand the protocol’s ordering behavior. Do not assume every platform will choose or display them identically.

How to design a 1200 × 630 preview image
Plan for a crop, not just the source dimensions
A 1200 × 630 file matches the broad-use recommendation, but a platform may display a card at a different ratio. Keep the title, logo, and other information that must remain visible away from the outer edges. The OG Image Design guide suggests a central safe area as practical protection against edge cropping; it is not an official universal safe-zone standard.
A 2:1 display crop is slightly wider than a 1.91:1 source. To make a 1200 × 630 source fill 2:1 without empty bars, a renderer could crop some of the top and bottom. That is why edge placement matters even when the file meets the general recommendation. Check how the specific service displays the result instead of assuming the full canvas will always be visible.
Choose a format for the artwork
The OG Image Design guide recommends JPEG for photographic images and PNG for flat graphics, text, or screenshots, and favors raster formats for broad crawler compatibility. This is secondary guidance, not a protocol guarantee or a promise that every platform accepts the same formats. For LinkedIn, its Help page’s stated 5 MB limit is the relevant file-size ceiling; do not assume that limit applies elsewhere.
Do not treat a dimension as a performance promise
A recommended size is a technical starting point. It does not establish that one image size or design will increase engagement or click-through rates. The cited figures are requirements or recommendations, not performance statistics.

How to check a preview and fix common problems
- Inspect the page source. Confirm the live HTML contains the intended title, description, URL, and image tags in the document head. Check for duplicate tags added by a theme, plugin, or server-side template.
- Open the exact image URL. Load it outside your site editor or authenticated session. Verify the returned asset is the right image, its dimensions match the metadata, and the server does not require cookies or a login.
- Compare the declared image to the platform’s limits. For LinkedIn, check its 1200 × 627-pixel minimum, recommended 1.91:1 ratio, and 5 MB maximum. For another service, use that service’s current official guidance where available.
- Preview through the target service. Use the platform’s official preview, inspection, or debugging tool where one is available. Look for cropping, an unexpected image, or a missing preview.
- After changing the asset or tags, request a fresh inspection if available. A displayed preview can be cached. Allow time for the service to recrawl; a change on your server does not necessarily update an already stored card immediately.
The preview has no image
- Check for a missing or misspelled
og:imageproperty, an incomplete URL, or a URL that points to the wrong deployed file. - Fetch the image URL as an unauthenticated visitor. If access controls prevent a crawler from retrieving it, publish an accessible asset or correct the restriction.
- Check for conflicting duplicate image tags. Because the protocol prefers the first value in a conflict, an earlier tag can take precedence over the one you intended.
- Inspect the target platform’s preview tool and allow for recrawling if the platform is showing a cached version.
The wrong image appears
- Search the rendered page source for every
og:imagetag, including tags injected by a CMS, theme, or plugin. - Put each image’s width, height, type, and alt properties immediately after its corresponding root image tag.
- If several image values are present, make sure the first one is the desired default where the protocol’s first-value preference applies.
The card is cropped or looks unclear
- Check whether the target service displays a ratio different from the source and adjust critical content toward the center.
- Confirm that the design remains legible at the size shown in the actual preview, not only in a full-size editor.
- Check the file’s real dimensions and format; metadata describing 1200 × 630 does not alter a file that has different dimensions.
A change does not appear
First verify the production page—not a local or staging copy—serves the updated tags and image. Then use the target service’s inspection tool if available. Preview caching and recrawl timing differ, and the sources cited here do not establish one refresh process for every platform.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Capture a page to inspect how it renders
A screenshot can help you review the visible page layout, but it does not replace checking the Open Graph tags or the social platform’s own preview: a browser screenshot shows the rendered webpage, while a share card is generated by the platform’s crawler and rendering rules.
For a local browser-based capture, open the page in a browser, set the viewport to the card dimensions you want to inspect, then use the browser’s screenshot command or developer tools to save an image. This helps check the appearance of a page or design at a given viewport; it does not prove how a third-party share card will crop it.
Or skip the browser setup
To capture a webpage directly as an image, make one request to ScreenshotNeo. The API returns an image or PDF; use a screenshot to inspect the rendered page, not as a substitute for creating the intended Open Graph artwork and metadata. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details.

Platform-specific limits need their own verification
Open Graph is a metadata protocol, not a promise that every social network, messaging app, or client will render a card the same way. LinkedIn’s published figures above are platform-specific. For X, the 1200 × 630 recommendation and possible 2:1 crop are reported by a secondary guide, not verified in the official X documentation reviewed for this topic. For Facebook, Slack, Discord, iMessage, WhatsApp, and Telegram, the 1200 × 630 figure is likewise a broad secondary recommendation, not a confirmed current rule for each service.
LinkedIn Help also says images less than 401 pixels wide display as a thumbnail. Its page is marked last updated two years before access, so recheck that detail if thumbnail behavior is important to a time-sensitive implementation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Open Graph protocol require a 1200 × 630 image?
No. The protocol defines metadata fields and image properties, not a universal pixel-size requirement. 1200 × 630 is a practical cross-platform recommendation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Is 1200 × 627 the same as 1200 × 630 for LinkedIn?
They are close but not identical. LinkedIn’s Help page states a minimum of 1200 × 627 pixels and recommends a 1.91:1 ratio; use its published figures when targeting LinkedIn.
Can Open Graph metadata point to a relative image path?
Use a complete absolute URL so the sharing crawler has an unambiguous address to fetch.
